A Parma, in Casa Madre, alle 09.30 del 5 novembre 2010, è morto serenamente il P. Renato Gotti, consumato dal tumore contro il quale lottava dal settembre del 2008.
Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato ad Azzano S. Paolo (Bergamo) il 13.9.1932.
Quella di P. Renato è la classica vocazione di quel favoloso contesto socio-religioso che fu la chiesa e la famiglia bergamasca nell'immediato dopoguerra. Una vocazione desiderata e impetrata dalla mamma, Anna, e dalla zia, Santina, suora missionaria canossiana; proposta dall'animatore missionario, P. Lorenzo Lini; accolta e realizzata da P. Renato che il 1° agosto 1945 bussò alla porta della casa saveriana di Pedrengo. Da qui, la settimana successiva, proseguì per Grumone dove iniziò il cammino scolastico e formativo per diventare saveriano.
A Grumone il P. Renato frequentò la seconda e terza media e il ginnasio superiore. Poi, nel settembre 1949 entrò in Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna). L'anno dopo, il 12 settembre 1950, emise la Prima Professione, «con la speranza che proprio questa sia la via per la quale il Signore, per sua infinita bontà, vuole che io cammini per la santificazione dell'anima mia … e per la cooperazione diretta alla salvezza degli infedeli» (14.8.1950).
L'iter formativo proseguì con i tre anni di liceo a Desio (Milano) (1950-1953), il servizio del Prefettato ad Ancona e i quattro anni di teologia a Piacenza (1954-1958), dove fu ordinato presbitero il 22.3.1958.
Con l'ordinazione P. Renato era pronto per lavorare nella vigna del Signore. «Una buona intelligenza, sostenuta da un'ottima applicazione. Semplice e lineare, maturato gradualmente ma costantemente. Notevoli doti musicali, coltivate con serietà ed equilibrio» (Presentazione alla Professione Perpetua). I Superiori decisero di destinarlo all'insegnamento della teologia e lo inviarono a Roma per il conseguimento della Licenza in teologia dogmatica.
Nel settembre del 1960 era a Parma, dove, per dieci anni, fu insegnante di teologia e, contemporaneamente, animatore del canto liturgico e compositore. Sono di questo periodo le "Beatitudini", una composizione per soli, coro e organo che ebbe un vero successo a Parma.
P. Renato però non aveva dimenticato le missioni. Lo fece presente ai Superiori e nel 1971 fu destinato al Brasile Sud che raggiunse ai primi di ottobre del 74, dopo aver conseguito il dottorato in sacra teologia all'Angelicum di Roma.
L'impatto con il nuovo paese risultò positivo: « Qui mi trovo molto bene. La gente è molto simpatica e cordiale. Vi ho trovato una tale carica di umanità che difficilmente mi è stato dato di trovare altrove» (8.11.74).
La prima destinazione fu Centenario do sul, una parrocchia sparsa in un’area di circa 500 Kmq e circa 20.000 abitanti. Lavorò poi nella parrocchia del Bom Pastor di Curitiba dove dovette misurarsi con le differenze socio-economiche della società brasiliana. Nell'83 passò «dalla grande e agitata Curitiba, alla piccola e tranquilla Virmond» (3.5.83). L'anno successivo fu mandato a Laranjeiras do Sul (85-88), e poi a Virmond (88-92); Cantagalo (92-97); Laranjeiras do Sul (97-08).
Sempre sostenuto dall'idea, ripetutamente espressa, di costituire chiese missionarie.
P. Renato era profondamente convinto che, come scrisse ad amici in Italia: «Non si può essere un vero discepolo di Cristo, un autentico cristiano, se non nella misura in cui si possiede lo spirito missionario. Non si può essere vero membro della Chiesa senza essere, in qualche maniera, anche missionario. […] Se ogni battezzato avesse la chiara coscienza di essere un inviato di Cristo … il problema missionario … penso avrebbe incontrato il cammino giusto per la sua decisiva soluzione.
Un'utopia, questa? Se vogliamo essere realisti, penso di sì; ma se abbiamo il coraggio di credere nella potenza dello Spirito di Dio, oserei dire di no».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo Paradiso.

Fr. Renato Gotti died peacefully in the Mother House, Parma, on Nov. 5 2010, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Born in Azzano S. Paolo (Bergamo, Italy), on September 13, 1932, he was 78 years old.
Fr. Renato was a typical vocation born in the social and religious context of the families of the Bergamo region in the immediate post-war period. His mother, Anna, and his aunt Santina, a Canossian missionary sister, both desired and prayed fervently for his vocation; his vocation was proposed by the missionary animator, Fr. Lorenzo Lini. Fr. Renato embraced and fulfilled it by joining the Xaverians at Pedrengo, on Aug. 1 1945. From there he went the following week to Grumone, where he began the academic and formative program to become a Xaverian.
At Grumone he attended the second and third years of high school. In September 1949, he began Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna). He made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1950 «with the hope that this is the path the Lord, in his infinite goodness, wants me to take for the sanctification of my soul… and for a direct cooperation in the salvation of the pagans» (Aug. 14, 1950). He then completed three years of lyceum in Desio (Milan – 1950-53), served as prefect at Ancona and did four years of theology at Piacenza (1954-58), where he was ordained priest on March 22, 1958.
After his ordination, Fr. Renato was ready to work in the Lord’s vineyard. «He is intelligent and hard-working. Simple and consistent, he matured gradually but constantly. He possesses considerable musical abilities, which he has cultivated seriously and with balance» (Presentation to Final Profession). The Superiors decided to assign him to teach theology and he was sent to Rome to study for a Masters in Dogmatic Theology.
In September 1960 he began a ten-year stint teaching theology in Parma; at the same time, he animated liturgical singing and composed the “Beatitudes,” a work for soloists, chorus and organ, which enjoyed a real success in Parma.
Nevertheless, Fr. Renato had not forgotten the missions. He expressed his desires to the Superiors, who assigned him to South Brazil in 1971. He arrived there in early October 1974, after obtaining a doctorate in Theology at the Angelicum University of Rome. The impact with Brazil was very positive: «I am very happy here. The people are very pleasant and cordial. I found a humanity here that I haven’t found anywhere else» (Nov. 8, 1974).
His first assignment was Centenario do Sul, a parish scattered over a territory of 500 square kilometers with about 20,000 inhabitants. He then worked in the parish of Bom Pastor of Curitiba, where he encountered the social and economic differences of Brazilian society. In 1983 he moved «from the great and restless Curitiba, to the small and tranquil Virmond» (May 3, 1983). The following year he was sent to Laranjeiras do Sul (1985-88) and then to Virmond (1988-92); Cantagalo (1992-97) and Laranjeiras do Sul (1997-2008).
He was always motivated by the repeatedly expressed idea of building missionary churches. As he wrote to his friends in Italy, Fr. Renato was profoundly convinced that «it is impossible to be a true disciple of Christ, an authentic Christian, unless we possess the missionary spirit. We cannot be true members of the Church without being, in some way, missionaries too… If every baptized person had the clear awareness of being sent by Christ, I believe that the missionary problem would be finally solved. Is this utopia? If we want to be realistic, yes; but if we have the courage to believe in the power of the Spirit of God, I would dare to say it is not».
