P. Vittorino Mosele

Il 23 agosto 2012, intorno alle 16,30, nella Casa di Cura St. Francis Terrace, di Milwaukee WI (USA), è morto il P. Vittorino Mosele. Nel Settembre 2010 gli era stata diagnosticata la sclerosi laterale amiotrofica (SLA), una malattia degenerativa e progressiva del sistema nervoso. Era in casa di cura dal 3 Agosto 2011. In novembre avrebbe compiuto 77 anni, essendo nato a San Bonifacio (Verona - Italia) il 6.11.1935.
Iniziò il cammino formativo Saveriano nella casa di Vicenza il 3.9.1946: «Posso dire di essere entrato all’Istituto di mia spontanea volontà; certamente nel ginnasio inferiore non pensavo alla gloria di Dio … solo nel ginnasio superiore compresi la vita del Saveriano e mi piacque» (Esame della vocazione). Alla fine della Va ginnasio, chiese di diventare membro effettivo dell’Istituto: «Io sono pronto a seguire la volontà di Dio; desidero e chiedo di poter entrare in Noviziato» (12.7.51). L’anno successivo, il 12 settembre emise la Prima Professione a San Pietro in Vincoli. Frequentò, quindi, le tre classi del Liceo a Desio (52-55).
Per gli studi di teologia fu inviato negli Stati Uniti. Frequentò il primo anno a Milton MA e gli altri tre a Franklin WI dove fu ordinato presbitero il 6 gennaio 1960.
Lo stesso giorno dell’ordinazione scrisse al Superiore Generale: «Ancora pochi mesi, Padre, e poi eccomi pronto all’Apostolato; pronto a qualsiasi posto mi assegnerà il Signore attraverso i miei Superiori. … sempre disposto con la più grande gioia».
Accettò di buon grado, alla fine della teologia, la destinazione agli USA. Vi rimase 13 anni, ricoprendo vari incarichi: Prefetto e insegnante (Holliston MA, 61-64); Co-fondatore di San Josè CA (64-66); Direttore Spirituale (Holliston MA, 66-67); Promotore vocazionale (Holliston MA, 67-70); Animatore Missionario (San José CA, 70-71); Promotore Vocazionale (Franklin WI, 74-76). Trovò anche il tempo per conseguire un Master of Arts in Psicologia sperimentale.
Dal 1971 al 2000 – escluso il biennio 74-76 trascorso a Franklin - appartenne alla missione della Sierra Leone. Fu Direttore del Centro Catechetico Diocesano di Makeni (77-78); Rettore e insegnante del Seminario minore (78-83); Parroco della cattedrale (84-86) e poi a Kabala (87-88); Rettore della domus di Kissy-Freetown e Cappellano delle prigioni (88-94); Parroco di Kambia (94-2000). Durante la guerra civile fu prigioniero con P. Franco Manganello di un gruppo di ribelli da settembre a dicembre 2000.
Nei ventotto anni di Sierra Leone P. Vittorino, sensibile ai problemi delle persone, ha fatto costruire scuole, strade, ponti, pozzi d'acqua potabile; ha organizzato cliniche mobili e altro. Il suo Vescovo e confratello, Mons. Biguzzi, ha scritto: «Amava la gente … Era un vero signore nell’ospitare i confratelli. La sua generosità verso quanti avevano bisogno, soprattutto studenti, era proverbiale» (23.8.12). In questo ambito, ultimamente si stava orientando verso un “ridimensionamento” degli aiuti e alla ricerca di modalità più efficaci di intervento.
Nel 2001 fu destinato agli USA per l’animazione missionaria vocazionale. Grande il suo impegno fin dal primo giorno, particolarmente in ambienti universitari. Scriveva a Natale del 2007: «Anche se impegnato in una attività da anni infruttuosa, sono sempre disposto a fare la volontà di Dio sia qui in America come ovunque, ma meglio ancora in Sierra Leone».
Infine, due anni fa, il tracollo fisico e la puntuale confessione di fiducia in Dio: «Se il Signore vuole tenermi sulla sedia a rotelle, sia fatta la sua santa volontà. Accetto con rassegnazione, in pace, e userò l’‘altare’ della carrozzella per dare “compimento a ciò che, dei patimenti di Cristo, manca nella mia carne, a favore del suo corpo che è la Chiesa” (Col 1, 24)».

Fr. Vittorino Mosele died on 23 August 2012, in the St. Francis Terrace Nursing Home, Milwaukee (USA). In September 2010, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative and progressive illness of the central nervous system. He was admitted to the nursing home on 3 August 2011.
Born in San Bonifacio (Verona - Italy), on 6 November 1935, he was 76 years old.
He began his Xaverian formation journey in the Vicenza community on 3 September 1946: «I can say that I joined the Institute freely; undoubtedly, I was not thinking about God’s glory in junior high school … only later did I understand the life of the Xaverian and I liked it» (Esame della vocazione). At the end of high school, he asked to become a member of the Institute: «I am ready to follow the will of God; I desire and I ask to be admitted to the Novitiate » (12.7.51). The following year, on 12 September, he made his First Profession at San Pietro in Vincoli. He then attended the three years of Lyceum at Desio (1952-55).
He was sent to study theology in the United States of America. He spent the first year in Milton (MA) and the other three in Franklin (WI) where he was ordained priest on 6 January 1960. On the day of his ordination he wrote to the Superior General: «A few more months, Father, and I will be ready for the Apostolate; I am ready to go wherever the Lord assigns me through my Superiors. … in a spirit of availability and with great joy ».
At the end of theology, he willingly accepted his assignment to the USA. He remained there for 13 years, carrying out various tasks: Prefect and teacher (Holliston, MA, 1961-64); Co-founder of San Josè, CA (1964-66); Spiritual Director (Holliston MA, 1966-67); Vocation Promoter (Holliston, MA, 1967-70); Missionary Animator (San José, CA, 1970-71); Vocation Promoter (Frank lin, WI, 1974-76). He also found the time to obtain a Master of Arts in experimental psychology.
From 1971 until 2000 – with the exception of two years in Franklin (1974-76) – he worked in the mission of Sierra Leone. He served there as Director of the Diocesan Catechetical Center of Makeni (1977-78); Rector and teacher at the minor seminary (1978-83); Parish priest of the Cathedral (1984-86) and then at Kabala
(1987-88); Rector of the Domus of Kissy-Freetown and prison chaplain (1988-94); Parish priest at Kambia (1994-2000). During the civil war, he was taken prisoner with Fr. Franco Manganello by a group of rebels (Sep-Dec 2000).
In the 28 years he spent in Sierra Leone Fr. Vittorino, sensitive to the problems of the people, built schools, roads, bridges, wells for drinking water and he organized mobile clinics. His bishop and confrere, Giorgio Biguzzi, wrote: «He loved the people … He was a true gentleman in playing host to the confreres. His generosity to all those in need, especially students, was proverbial» (23.8.12). In this area, he was in the process of “reducing” this kind of help and searching for other and more effective forms of intervention.
In 2001 he was assigned to the USA for Missionary-Vocation Animation. His commitment was great right from the beginning, especially in the university setting. At Christmas 2007 he wrote: «Even though the activity I have been engaged in for years has proved to be unfruitful, I am always ready to do the will of God here in America, or elsewhere, but even better in Sierra Leone».
Finally, two years ago, his physical decline and his trust in God led him to say: «If the Lord wants to keep me in a wheel chair, may his holy will be done. I accept it in a spirit of resignation and in peace, and I will use this wheel chair as an ‘altar’ in order “to complete in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church” (Col 1:24)».
