P. Antonio Munaretti

Nato a S. Giovanni Ilarione (VR), Diocesi di Vicenza, il 23.VIII.1897 da Romano e Danese Fortunata, compì gli studi ginnasiali nel Seminario Diocesano di Vicenza.
A 23 anni, il 6.IX.1920 entrava a Parma nell'Istituto Saveriano ove, compiuto l'anno di Noviziato, emetteva la Professione religiosa il 31.X.1922 consacrandosi interamente alle Missioni nella Famiglia Saveriana.
Compiuti gli studi teologici, il 28.11.1926 veniva ordinato Sacerdote nella Cappella dell'Istituto da Mons. Conforti, assieme ai Confratelli PP. Chiarel, Emaldi, Vincenzo Capra.
Meno di un mese più tardi, il 25.111.1926, all'età di 28 anni, partiva per la Cina, assieme agli stessi compagni di Ordinazione. Nel discorso di saluto, pronunziato in quel giorno nel Duomo di Parma, il Fondatore ebbe a dire ai partenti:
"Vi attendono difficoltà di ogni genere... Gesù Cristo ve lo ha predetto: Vi mando come agnelli in mezzo ai lupi... hannoperseguitato me, perseguiteranno ancor voi... ma non temete perché io ho vinto il mondo. E voi pure, vinti in apparenza, sarete alla fine vincitori... Nel Cenacolo dell'Istituto vi siete preparati al sacrificio ed il Signore dice a voi pure, oggi, ciò che diceva diciannove secoli orsono a' suoi Apostoli: "Surgite, eamus..." Noi vi ammiriamo, noi santamente invidiamo la vostra sorte; vi allontanate da noi, ma non ci separiamo. Vivrete sempre nel nostro pensiero commosso e riconoscente..."
Destinato alla Diocesi di Cheng-chow (Honan Occidentale), lavorerà in Cina per 5 anni fino al 19 ottobre 1931 quando locolse la morte nel Distretto Missionario di Lo-ho, per peritonite acuta.
Il giorno dopo giungeva a Parma un telegramma dalla Cina annunciante la morte del P. Antonio; pubblicato su Fede e Civiltà esso diceva:
"La notte del 20 ottobre u.s. un telegramma dalla Cina ci annunciava la morte del carissimo P. Antonio Munaretti, ben noto per le sue belle relazioni, ma soprattutto per la sua prigionia tra i briganti cinesi nel tempo di Natale 1927. Per la sua virtù e per la sua attività egli era uno dei Missionari più apprezzati e benvoluti".

Fr. Antonio Munaretti died of peritonitis on Oct. 19 1931 at Cheng-chow, China. He was 34 years old, born on Aug. 23 1897 at S. Giovanni Ilarione (Prov. of Verona, diocese of Vicenza).
After studies at the diocesan Seminary of Vicenza, he entered the Xaverians at Parma on Sept. 6 1920, when he was 23 years old. At the completion of his Novitiate, he professed religious missionary vows on Oct. 31 1922, and then, on Feb. 28 1926, Bishop Conforti ordained him a priest in the Chapel of the Mother House, together with confreres Frs. Chiarel, Emaldi and Vincenzo Capra.
Not even a month later, Fr. Antonio left for China together with his ordination classmates. In the departure discourse at the Cathedral of Parma, on March 25 1926, Bishop Conforti said to the missionaries: “Difficulties of every kind await you, you go forth to a people torn by intestine wars, you will reach there when there is no security for anyone, much less for strangers, for the heralds of a new religion, but you will be made superior to all, you will triumph over all…. Christ predicted it all: ‘I send you as sheep amidst wolves... they persecuted me, they will persecute you ... fear not I have overcome the world...’ You, seemingly conquered, will ultimately be the victors…
In the Cenacle of your institute you prepared for sacrifice, and the Lord tells you today what He told His apostles 19 centuries ago: ‘surgite, eamus.’ Rise up from the shadow of your peaceful retreat and let us go… We admire you; we envy your chosen destiny. You leave us but you are never separated from us. You will always live on in our profound and deep-rooted thoughts.”
Assigned to the Diocese of Cheng-chow in Western Honan, Fr. Munaretti worked in China for 5 years until the day of his death on Oct. 19 1931 in the missionary district of Lo-ho, for a severe case of peritonitis.
“Fede e Civiltà” reported the news with these words: “Through a telegram from China, received in the evening of Oct. 20 1931, we learned of the news of the death of our beloved Fr. Antonio Munaretti; he was well known for his beautiful articles on China, but especially for his prison time among Chinese brigands during Christmas time of 1927. He was a much appreciated and loved missionary because of his virtue and mission activities.”
