1936 - 2025
Lunedì 07 luglio 2025, alle ore 17.15, in Casa Madre, Parma, è deceduto il nostro confratello p. Bartolomeo (Meo) Elia. P. Meo aveva 89 anni compiuti essendo nato il 17 marzo 1936, a Villafranca Piemonte, Torino, Italia.
Dopo aver frequentato le Scuole Medie Inferiori, il giovane Meo entra nel Seminario Arcivescovile di Torino in Rivoli dove frequenta il Liceo Filosofico e la Propedeutica (1950-1956). Spinto dal desiderio di diventare missionario, il 02.10.1956 entra nella Casa Saveriana di San Pietro in Vincoli dove vive l’anno di Noviziato ed emette la prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria il 19 ottobre 1957.
Il giovane Meo continua la sua formazione teologica a Parma (1957-1960). Qui emette la Professione Perpetua e riceve l’Ordinazione Presbiterale lo stesso giorno (16.10.1960). Subito dopo l’Ordinazione, dal 1961 al 1969 viene destinato allo CSAM (Centro Saveriano Animazione Missionaria), a Parma. Qui p. Meo svolge vari servizi: Direttore del giornalino “Missionari Saveriani” (1961 -1965), Collaboratore di “Fede e Civiltà” per la sezione “Spiritualità Missionaria” (1963-1966), Visitatore PPOOMM nei Seminari (1965-1967), Direttore della rivista “Fede e Civiltà” (1966-1969).
Nel 1970 p. Meo viene destinato allo Zaire. Dopo un anno di studio della lingua a Parigi, dal 1971 al 1975 è a Kiringye come Rettore e Direttore del Centro Attività Missionarie, Mediche e Sociali. È Vice Regionale (1972-1974), e Superiore Religioso per la zona “Ubembe” (1971-1974). Dal 1974 al 1977 è Consigliere Regionale. Dal 1975 al 1977 è parroco di Bunyakiri.
Eletto Consigliere Generale nel X Capitolo Generale, dal 1977 al 1983 p. Meo serve la Congregazione nelle 24 visite fatte ai confratelli nelle varie Circoscrizioni; partecipa ai Convegni Internazionali organizzati dalla Direzione Generale.
Nel 1983, nel XI Capitolo Generale, viene rieletto Consigliere Generale. In questo sessennio compie più 17 visite alle Circoscrizioni Saveriani.
Nel 1989 p. Meo trascorre un periodo a Finchley-Londra per lo studio dell’Inglese e dal 1990 al 2003 è allo CSAM di Brescia come Direttore della rivista “Missione Oggi”.
Nel 2004 viene destinato alla Circoscrizione del Brasile Nord. Nello stesso anno è parroco di São Pedro, Concórdia do Pará (2004-2008). Dal 2008 al 2011 è Superiore Regionale. Nel 2011 viene eletto come Consigliere Regionale. Dopo un periodo di cure a Parma (2011) ritorna in Amazzonia come parroco di São Pedro, Concórdia do Pará (2012-2017). In seguito, p. Meo è collaboratore (2017-2020) del Centro di Animazione e Formazione Missionaria di Ananindeua.
Nel 2021 p. Meo viene richiamato in Italia dove è impegnato nell’Animazione Missionaria e Vocazionale nella comunità Saveriana di Desio, MB, fino al 02 giugno 2025, giorno in cui viene trasferito, per ragioni di salute, alla Casa Madre di Parma.
Rev.mo signor Direttore,
Credo di recarle con questa mia un gradito dono di Pasqua: sono un giovane, un giovane chierico di vent’anni che desidera entrare nel suo Istituto per diventare missionario. Non abbia timore che Le scriva in un momento di entusiasmo e che ciò che le dico non corrisponda alla vera realtà. No: sono due anni e mezzo che ho in cuore questa brama. Precisamente, non saprei dire quando il Signore mi ha fatto questo dono, mi ha fatto sorgere questa ispirazione: ho sempre ammirato i missionari per il loro fare schietto e sincero, appassionato, per il loro ardore di conquista e di generosità; particolarmente mi ha impressionato la figura, la gioia di P. Alfeo Emaldi. Anzi, forse proprio dal suo incontro – due anni e mezzo fa, circa, incomincia la mia vocazione missionaria: mi trovai ad un tratto a pensare che cosa mi impediva di impegnarmi anch’io, tutto, per le Missioni. Quasi senza accorgermene, con tutta calma, ci pensai su. Restai – lo confesso – sbalordito quasi: niente me lo impediva. Bastava un po' di sacrificio e una decisione. Ebbene – mi sono detto – sarò missionario! Ero quasi al termine della seconda Liceo; mi confidai col Direttore Spirituale: io naturalmente credevo che ormai, deciso io, tutto fosse fatto: scrivere a casa, fare i bauli, cambiare Seminario… Il Padre Spirituale invece mi consigliò di pensarci ancora, senza affanno, con calma…
…Ma non le ho ancora detto perché mi sono rivolto al Suo Istituto e non ad un altro. Di preciso, non so neppure io il perché: mi ha impressionato l’ardore e lo zelo di p. Alfeo Emaldi e di p. Valter Gardini: sono gli unici missionari Saveriani che abbia direttamente incontrati e mi immagino che i Missionari Saveriani siano tutti così. Poi conosco da anni ormai, la rivista “Fede e Civiltà”, la migliore delle riviste missionarie per lo “spirito e la mentalità veramente missionaria”. Studiando questa mentalità e questo spirito, mi sono arciconvinto che il Suo Istituto sia pienamente in grado di formare Missionari ardenti, missionari santi: è per questo che l’ho scelto… (Lettera manoscritta dal Seminario Arcivescovile di Torino in Rivoli, 4 aprile 1956).
Lunedì 7 luglio 2025, p. Meo sale in Cielo per ricevere la ricompensa del servo buono e fedele.

On Monday, July 7th, 2025, at 5:15 p.m., our confrere Fr. Bartolomeo (a.k.a. Meo) Elia, 89, passed away at the Mother House in Parma, Italy. Fr. Meo was born on March 17th, 1936, in Villafranca Piemonte, Turin, Italy.
After middle school, young Meo entered the Turin Archiepiscopal Seminary in Rivoli, where he attended senior high school (philosophical lyceum) and propaedeutics (1950-1956). Driven by the desire to become a missionary, on October 2nd, 1956, he entered the Xaverian House of San Pietro in Vincoli for the year of novitiate, and on October 19th, 1957, made his first religious and missionary profession.
Young Meo continued his theological training in Parma (1950-1960), where, on October 16th, 1960, he made his perpetual profession and was ordained a priest. Right after his ordination, he was assigned to CSAM (Xaverian centre for mission awareness), in Parma, and worked there from 1961 to 1969. At CSAM, Fr. Meo carried out various tasks: Editor of the bulletin Missionari Saveriani (1961-1965), Collaborator for the column “Spiritualità Missionaria” of Fede e Civiltà (1963-1965), Visitor of seminaries on behalf of the Pontifical Mission Societies (1965-1967), Editor of the magazine Fede e Civiltà (1966-1969).
In 1970, Fr. Meo was assigned to Zaire. He studied French in Paris for one year; then, from 1971 to 1975, he was in Kiringye, as Rector of the community and Director of the Centre for Missionary, Medical and Social Activities. He was also Vice Regional (1972-1974) and Religious Superior for the “Ubembe” area (1971-1974). From 1974 to 1977, he was Regional Councillor and, from 1975 to 1977, also pastor of Bunyakiri.
Following his election as General Councillor during the 10th General Chapter, from 1977 to 1983, Fr. Meo served the Congregation through 24 visits to the confreres in the various circumscriptions and through participations in International Conventions organised by the General Direction.
In 1983, during the 11th General Chapter, he was re-elected General Councillor. During the following six years, he paid 17 visits to the Xaverian Circumscriptions.
In 1989, Fr. Meo spent a period in Finchley, London, studying English; then, from 1990 to 2003, he was at CSAM, in Brescia, as Editor of the magazine Missione Oggi.
In 2004, he was assigned to the Circumscription of North Brazil, and became pastor of São Pedro Parish in Concórdia do Pará (2004-2008). From 2008 to 2011, he was Regional Superior, while in 2011 he was elected Regional Councillor. In 2011, he spent a period of medical treatment in Parma (2011), after which he returned in Amazonia to work as pastor of São Pedro Parish in Concórdia do Pará (2012-2017). Subsequently, Fr. Meo became collaborator (2017-2020) of the Centre for Missionary Awareness and Training in Ananindeua.
In 2021, Fr. Meo was asked to return to Italy. He was involved in mission awareness and vocation promotion in the Xaverian community in Desio, Milan-Brianza. He worked there till June 2nd, 2025, the day when, due to health reasons, he was taken to the Mother House in Parma.

I believe this letter will give you an Easter gift that you may appreciate: I am a young man, a 20-year-old seminarian who wishes to join your Institute to become missionary. Please, do not fear that I am simply writing on a fit of enthusiasm and that what I am telling you does not correspond to reality. On the contrary, I have been cherishing this desire for two year and a half. I cannot say with precision when the Lord gave me this gift and allowed this inspiration to emerge within me. I have always admired the missionaries for their frank, sincere and passionate way of doing things, for their ardour of conquest and their generosity. In particular, I was impressed by the personality and joy of Fr. Alfeo Emaldi. In fact, perhaps, my missionary vocation began after meeting him – about, two and half years ago; I suddenly found myself thinking what was keeping me from committing myself too, completely, to the Missions. Virtually without realising it, I began to think calmly about what [was preventing this decision]. I must admit that I was almost astonished: nothing was holding me back. All it took was a little sacrifice and a decision. So – I told myself – I am going to be a missionary! I confided this intention to my Spiritual Master – naturally I believed that, since I had made my decision, everything was laid down: I had to write home, prepare my trunks, change seminary… Instead, my Spiritual Master advised me to reconsider the matter unhurriedly, calmly…
…By the way, I did not tell you why I am contacting Your Institute instead of another. Actually, I do not really know why: I was impressed by the ardour and zeal of Fr. Alfeo Emaldi and Fr. Valter Gardini – they are the only Xaverian missionaries I have personally met, and I imagine that the Xaverian missionaries are all like them. Then, I have known for years now, the magazine Fede e Civiltà, the best of missionary magazines in terms of “missionary spirit and mentality.” By studying this mentality and spirit, I formed the strong conviction that Your Institute is fully capable to train ardent missionaries, holy missionaries, and this is why I chose it… (Handwritten Letter from the Turin Archiepiscopal Seminary in Rivoli, April 4th, 1956).
On Monday, July 7th, 2025, Fr. Meo went up to Heaven to receive the reward of the good and faithful servant.
