Domenica 15 giugno 2025, alle ore 2.30 a.m. circa, nella casa Saveriana di Salerno, Italia, è deceduto, per grave malattia, il nostro confratello p. Franco Manganello, accompagnato dai confratelli della comunità e da alcuni amici di Desio e USA. P. Franco aveva 87 anni compiuti essendo nato il 27 ottobre 1938, a San Martino di Lupari (provincia di Padova, ma diocesi di Treviso, Italia).

Il 1° ottobre 1951, il giovane Franco entra nella Casa Apostolica di Vicenza dove conclude le scuole Medie inferiori. Nel 1954 continua la sua formazione nella Casa Apostolica di Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia, dove frequenta le Scuole Medie Superiori (1954-1956).

Franco vive l’anno di Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli dove emette la Prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria (12.09.1957). Dal 1957 al 1960 è a Desio per frequentare il Liceo Classico. Dal 1960 al 1961 è a Parma per l’anno di Propedeutica. Realizza l’anno di Prefettato a Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia (1961-1962) e a Vicenza dove, allo stesso tempo, frequenta il primo anno di Teologia (1962-1963) presso il Seminario Diocesano vicentino. Continua la sua formazione teologica a Parma (1963-1966). Qui a Parma emette la Professione Perpetua il 12 settembre 1963. In questo periodo frequenta anche il Conservatorio Musicale di Parma (1964-1966).

Nella Cattedrale di Parma riceve l’Ordinazione Presbiterale il 17 ottobre 1965.

Dopo l’Ordinazione, p. Franco viene destinato (1966-1968) alla comunità Saveriana di Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia, dove presta il suo servizio come insegnante (1966-1969) e vicerettore (1967-1969). Mentre è a Zelarino si iscrive al Conservatorio Musicale di Venezia.

Dal 1969 al 1974 viene inviato alla comunità Saveriana di Desio come insegnante di Storia, Musica, Latino, Filosofia. Nel 1972, da Desio, dà anche una mano nell’insegnamento alla comunità Saveriana di Cremona. Sempre a Desio si iscrive al Conservatorio musicale di Bolzano (1970-1974) dove ottiene la “Licenza-Diploma del Corso del Conservatorio dello Strumento in prova ‘Chitarra Classica’”.

Dopo alcuni mesi trascorsi a Londra per lo studio dell’Inglese, nel dicembre del 1974 p. Franco giunge in Sierra Leone dove rimane fino al 2015. Qui lavora a Kamabai dapprima come viceparroco (1975-1978) e poi come parroco (1978-1973). Dal 1983 al 1986 è parroco di Kabala. In questo periodo è anche consigliere regionale.

Dopo l’Anno Sabbatico (1986-1987) vissuto a Roma (Collegio Internazionale Guido Maria Conforti) dove frequenta alcuni corsi all’Urbaniana, p. Franco ritorna in Sierra Leone, più precisamente a Kambia dove serve prima come viceparroco (1987-1991) e poi come parroco (1991-1996). Dal 1996 al 1999 è parroco a Madina. A causa della guerra, trascorre vari mesi in Italia. Di ritorno in Sierra Leone (2000) vive l’esperienza, insieme ad altri, del sequestro^[1]. Trascorre il 2001 a Parma, Casa Madre.

Nel 2001 p. Franco ritorna in Sierra Leone dove è impegnato come parroco a Madina (2001-2005). Dal 2004 al 2005 è anche vice superiore regionale. Dal 2005 al 2008 è parroco a Kambia. Nel 2007 viene eletto Delegato al XV Capitolo Generale (Tavernerio). Dal 2008 al 2009 è parroco a Binkolo. Dopo aver partecipato ai “Tremesi di Tavernerio” (2009), va nella Casa Regionale di Makeni dove è impegnato nel ministero (2010-2015). In questo stesso periodo dà una mano anche a Madina (2013).

Nel 2015 viene destinato definitivamente alla Regione italiana. Trascorre un anno (2015) nella comunità Saveriana di Desio, come Animatore Missionario e collaboratore nel ministero pastorale.

Dal 2016 si trovava nella comunità Saveriana di Salerno, impegnato nell’Animazione Missionaria e nel ministero pastorale.

«Rev.mo P. Generale,
con vera gioia metto giù queste righe pensando che sia giunto il momento di inviare a Lei la domanda per la mia ammissione ai voti temporanei del 12 settembre. Questa decisione che io prendo non è, in verità, una cosa fatta così, su due piedi e con poca coscienza; non è soltanto una vaga conoscenza compresa più o meno in questo anno di Noviziato; ho cercato sempre di rendere la vita mia in famiglia Saveriana meglio che potevo, secondo ciò che il Signore mi suggeriva e i Superiori mi consigliavano: non escludo però tante cose che mi rendono indegno di abbracciare questo stato di perfezione. Penso però che il Signore non guarderà a ciò che manca per la mia perfezione, ma a quel poco che c’è, e Lui penserà a farmi degno. Con consiglio pure dei miei Superiori io intendo di entrare in questa Pia Società, nella famiglia Saveriana, sempre aspettando da Lei il consenso per fare questa mia offerta a Dio. Baciandole riverentemente la mano, chiede la benedizione»

Nella notte del 15 giugno 2025, p. Franco va incontro allo Sposo e con lui entra alle nozze per partecipare della gioia e della vita eterna.

Fr. Franco Romano Manganello

On Sunday, June 15^th, 2025, around 2:30 a.m., due to severe illness, our confrere Fr. Franco Manganello, 87, passed away at the Xaverian house in Salerno, Italy, while being assisted by the confreres of that community and some friends from Desio and USA. Fr. Franco was born on October 27^th, 1938, in San Martino di Lupari (Padua Province, Diocese of Treviso), Italy. 

On October 1^st, 1951, young Franco entered the Casa Apostolica (Xaverian minor seminary) in Vicenza where he completed middle school. In 1954, he continued his training at the Casa Apostolica in Zelarino, Mestre, Venice, where he attended junior high school (1954-1956).

Franco spent the year of Novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli, where he made his First Religious and Missionary Profession (September 12^th, 1957). From 1957 to 1960, he was in Desio, Milan, to attend senior high school (liceo classico). From 1960 to 1961, he was in Parma for a year of propaedeutics. He served as Prefect of students in Zelarino, Mestre, Venice (1961-1962) and in Vicenza, where, at the same time, he attended the first year of Theology (1962-1963) at the Diocesan Seminary. He then continued his theological training in Parma (1963-1966). In Parma he made his Perpetual Profession on September 12^th, 1963. In that period he also attended the Music Conservatory of Parma (1964-1966).

He was ordained to the Priesthood on October 17^th, 1965, in the Cathedral of Parma.

Following the ordination, Fr. Franco was assigned to the Xaverian community in Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia (1966-1968), where he carried out the service of teacher (1966-1969) and vice-rector (1967-1969). While in Zelarino, he enrolled at the Music Conservatory of Venice.

In 1969, he was sent to the Xaverian community in Desio, Milan, where (1969-1974) he taught history, music, Latin, and Philosophy. In 1972, he commuted between Desio and the Xaverian community in Cremona to help with teaching. While in Desio, he enrolled at the Music Conservatory of Bolzano (1970-1974), where he gained a Licenza-Diploma from the Conservatory’s Experimental Course of Classical Guitar.

After few months in London for the study of English, in December 1974, Fr. Franco reached Sierra Leone. He would belong to that region till 2015. He worked in Kamabai, first as assistant pastor (1975-1978) then as pastor (1978-1983). From 1983 to 1986, he worked as pastor in Kambala. In that same period he was also regional councillor. 

Following a sabbatical year (1986-1987) in Rome (at Collegio Internazionale Guido Maria Conforti), where he attended some courses at Urbaniana University, Fr. Franco returned to Sierra Leone, specifically in Kambia, to serve as assistant pastor (1987-1991) then as pastor (1991-1996). From 1996 to 1999, he was pastor at Madina. Owing to the war, he was forced to spend several months in Italy. Upon returning to Sierra Leone (2000), he was kidnapped with others.^[1] He spent the year 2001 at the Mother House in Parma.

Towards the end of 2001, Fr. Franco returned to Sierra Leone, to work as pastor of the parish in Madina (2001-2005). From 2004 to 2005, he served also as vice superior regional. From 2005 to 2008, he was pastor in Kambia. In 2007, he was elected delegate to the XV General Chapter (Tavernerio, Italy). From 2008 to 2009, he was pastor in Binkolo. After taking part in the Three months ongoing formation in Tavernerio (2009), he moved to the Regional House in Makeni, where he was involved in ministry (2010-2015). In that same period he also helped in the pastoral ministry in Madina (2013).

In 2015, he was assigned to the Region of Italy. He spent one year in the Xaverian community in Desio, working in mission awareness and pastoral ministry.

From 2016, he was in the Xaverian community in Salerno, involved in mission awareness and pastoral ministry.

«Dear Fr. General,
I write down these lines with true joy as the time has come for me to send You my application for admission to the profession of the temporary vows on September 12^th. I am not making this decision on the spur of the moment and with little conscience; nor is it based on a vague knowledge [of religious life] acquired, more or less, in this year of Novitiate. I have always tried to live my life in the Xaverian family as best as I could, according to what the Lord suggested and the Superiors advised me. However, I do not hide from myself the many things that make me unworthy to embrace this state of perfection. That notwithstanding, I trust that the Lord will not look at what is lacking for my perfection, but at what little there is, and He will think of making me worthy. Based also on the advice of my Superiors, I intend to enter this Pious Society, in the Xaverian family, and to this purpose I await for your consent to make this offering of myself to God. Reverently kissing your hand, I ask for your blessing»

On the night of June 14^th-15^th, 2025, Fr. Franco went to meet the Bridegroom and go in with him to the wedding banquet to share in joy and life eternal.
