"Alle ore 19,15 di Sabato 29.X.1954, una grande luce si è spenta nella Famiglia dei Missionari Saveriani, con la morte di P. Pietro Uccelli, nato nella provincia di Reggio Emilia il 10.III.1874.
Una folla immensa convenuta da tutto il Veneto, che lo conosceva e venerava da 35 anni, si è inginocchiata al passaggio della sua salma con quella convinzione interiore che fa gridare al popolo il manifesto passaggio dei Santi.
Chi era P. Uccelli? Il figlio di un calzolaio divenuto prete e parroco per vocazione. Distintosi per zelo e virtù fin dai primi anni del suo ministero sacerdotale, era considerato dal suo Vescovo e dal Clero locale, una perla di prete negli ultimi anni dell'Ottocento emiliano...
Trovandosi egli un giorno a predicare a Poviglio, si recò a Parma per sentire il Vescovo Magani commemorare i Martiri della Cina uccisi dai Boxers nel 1900. La parola del Vescovo che elogiava il neonato Istituto di Mons. Conforti, scaldò l'animo del pretino Uccelli... ,“Perché non potrei prendere io il posto di qualcuno che è caduto laggiù?" Decise in quel momento la sua vocazione missionaria, a Parma tra i Saveriani.
... Dopo tre anni di difficile lotta sia nei confronti del Vescovo Diocesano sia nei confronti del padre, Don Pietro vinse la causa, ed entrò all'Istituto Emiliano per le Missioni Estere nel 1904: si preparò quel tanto che occorreva e nel 1906 era pronto a partire per la Cina.
Prevedendo burrasche famigliari non avverti suo padre, che però comparve la mattina del commiato nel viale fuori Porta Farmi che conduceva all'Istituto, proprio mentre il figlio tornava dall'aver celebrato la Messa al Monastero di Clausura delle Cappuccine. P. Uccelli ricorderà: "Vedo un ometto... ma quello è mio padre!" Era suo padre... che non potè impedire al figlio di essere accompagnato a Napoli da Mons. Conforti per l'imbarco.
Restò missionario in Cina, nell'Honan Occidentale, fino al 1919: fu a Cheng-chow, a Pe-choang, a Hsu-chow.
Nel 1919 il Fondatore pensò di richiamarlo come Direttore Spirituale alla Casa Madre in sostituzione del P. A. Sartori, destinato Rettore della prima Scuola Apostolica dei Saveriani in Vicenza. Proprio a Vicenza subentrò il P. Uccelli nel 1921, quando lo stesso P. Sartori ripartiva per la Cina.
A Vicenza P. Uccelli formò tutta intera la seconda generazione dei Missionari Saveriani pur divenendo Consultore Generale, non abbandonò mai la Sede di Vicenza. Fin dai primi anni del suo mandato come Rettore era tale lo zelo che dispiegava da trovare tempo da reggere da solo la cinquantina dei suoi apostolini e di dedicarsi nello stesso tempo alla predicazione diocesana, alla propaganda missionaria ed alla Direzione Spirituale di molte anime, specialmente sacerdotali, tra le quali Vescovi e Cardinali.., come Mons. F. Rodolfi e il Card. E. Dalla Costa. Assertore instancabile della devozione a S. Giuseppe ed alle Anime Sante del Purgatorio fu accompagnato negli ultimi anni costantemente da una vera fama di santità. I giovani "prefetti" saveriani scrivevano diari segreti... registrando fatti straordinari e racconti di virtù in episodi d'una freschezza da fioretti francescani...
Il carattere del P. Uccelli era un misto di affabilità umana, di virtù vigilantissime, di intelligenza duttile ed arguta.
Piccolo e magro, con la barbetta ridotta a sola cornice di richiamo agli occhi mobili ed acutissimi, la faccia improntata al profilo di un "Laotze cinese", pareva vivesse fuori dal mondo e che nessun problema riuscisse ad alterargli l'im-perturbabile costanza del sentire e dell'operare...

Fr. Pietro Uccelli died for sickness following an hernia on Oct. 29 1954 at the Xaverian house of Vicenza. He was 80 years old, born at Barco di Bibbiano (Reggio Emilia) on Mar. 10 1874.
He was a son of a shoemaker, coming from a poor and tried family. He lost his mother Albina when he was 1 year and half old, and then, after a second marriage, he lost his stepmother. His sensitivity was particularly geared towards the suffering, and was generous with the needy. Because of the needs of that poor and growing family with a third marriage of his father Battista, the pastor sent Pietro to study at the Minor Seminary at Marola, and then at Reggio Emilia. On Sept. 18 1897 Bishop Manicardi ordained Fr. Pietro Uccelli a priest. He was assistant priest to two small parishes first, and then named pastor at Piolo, a small mountain parish, so that he could dedicate more time in preaching retreats in the diocese. As a young priest, he went around the diocese to announce Jesus and his Gospel, from the pulpit, in the confessional, and with his charity work. The people repeated: “he preaches with his heart!”
One day Fr. Ucceli came to Parma to listen to Bishop Magani who was commemorating the Chinese Martyrs of the Boxer persecution in China in 1900. Among the martyrs was also Blessed Fogolla who was raised at the convent of the Annunciation in Parma. Bishop Magani made an impression on Fr. Uccelli who listened attentively to the life of this martyr, and the dedication of the new Xaverian congregation of Parma, founded by Conforti. Fr. Uccelli wanted to leave for China, and take the place of these martyrs, with a total dedication of his life for the proclamation of the Gospel. He had some resistance from his father Battista, and from his own Bishop Marchi, but he finally entered the Xaverian seminary on Nov. 30 1904.
After a year of preparation with the profession of Religious Vows on Dec. 3 1905, he left for China on Jan. 13 1906, together with Frs. Armelloni, and Pellerzi. He worked in Western Honan till 1919 at mission posts of Pe-choang, Cheng-chow, Suchow and Sianghsien. Where there were very few Christians, he spread the Gospel with personal sacrifices, opening the road for future abundant fruits. He wrote: “I’m happy to work for the salvation of many souls… My project of life is to serve the Lord and make him known and loved by many who do not know him.”
The Founder recalled Fr. Uccelli back to Italy on Nov. 10, 1919, as spiritual director of the Mother House. He stayed in Parma only one year, because on Aug. 18 1921, Fr. Uccelli succeeds Fr. Sartori in Vicenza as he departed for China.
During this time, he professed Perpetual Vows in the Congregation on Sept. 17 1921. In Vicenza, Fr. Uccelli guided as rector and spiritual director the second generation of Xaverians who came from the Veneto area. He was also named consulter to the General (first to Bishop Conforti, then to Fr. Amatore Dagnino) on Aug. 16 1928. Since his assignment to Vicenza, his zeal was admirable, taking care of the 50 boys at the Apostolic School, dedicating himself to preaching in the diocese, sharing the missionary ideal, and providing spiritual direction to many people, especially priests, and even bishops.
Fr. Uccelli was an untiring advocate for the devotion to St. Joseph and the Poor Souls. His soul was simple, his character meek, his mind innocent and clear, approachable and witty, small and thin with a simple beard. His holiness touched many who approached him. All his richness was from within himself, with much simplicity and abandonment to God. The many tasks of each day never altered the peace of his soul, which was rooted on prayer, humility, loving compassion towards neighbor, and love of God. Whenever a few people started talking about curing of illnesses through his blessings, Fr. Uccelli pointed people to “his” St. Joseph, increasing his popular devotion. “We need to obey, like St. Joseph!” he often exclaimed. At his death, on Oct. 29 1954, the newspapers of Vicenza wrote, “A Saint has died. An endless pilgrimage of faithful is heading to the Xaverian house in Vicenza, to pay homage to Fr. Pietro Uccelli, who is considered a saint. Many and true miracles are attributed to him… Exemplary for his devotion, humility and charity, Fr. Uccelli practiced a profound influence in guiding many souls. The most fruitful service of the last years of his life was done in the confessional.” (Gazzettino, Oct. 30 1954)
