Il 3 aprile 2014, all’ospedale di Padang intorno alle 8,30 locali si è spento, consumato da un tumore, P. Silvano Zulian.
Era prossimo ai 76 anni, essendo nato a Marano Lagunare (Udine - Italia) il 16.4.1938.
Penultimo di sette fratelli in una famiglia di pescatori con grossi problemi economici, ma straordinariamente ricca di fede, fin da piccolo fu abituato a sobbarcarsi alle fatiche fisiche e a vivere una vita spirituale buona e convinta. Entrò all'Istituto a Udine nel 1950. Frequentò le tre Medie appunto a Udine e il Ginnasio a Zelarino. Nel 1955 passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli per l’anno di Noviziato. Così lo presentò il Padre Maestro per la Prima Professione: “È quieto e di scarsa comunicativa, per cui quasi non si avverte la sua presenza in comunità, ma non è un misantropo, ama il gioco ed è allegro, ma di un’allegria non rumorosa. È diligente e attivo. Buono spirito di pietà”.
Fatta la Prima Professione il 12.9.1956, frequentò il Liceo a Desio (’56-’59), prestò il suo servizio di prefetto a Cremona (’59-’61), concluse il suo iter formativo con i quattro anni di Teologia a Parma dove fu ordinato presbitero il 25.10.1964.
Così lo presentarono i formatori per l’ammissione ai ministeri ordinati: “... dotato di notevole senso artistico. Fornito di senso pratico, (meno di capacità speculativa) si sobbarca volentieri a fatiche fisiche, rivelando generosità e spirito di sacrificio. Timido, riservato e di poche parole con i Superiori... i dati che emergono dalla sua condotta non sono affatto negativi. Si rivela generoso, laborioso, intraprendente. Cura la sua pietà, studia e si interessa ai temi della vita soprannaturale”.
Dopo l'ordinazione gli fu affidato il compito di insegnante e vicerettore a Cremona (’65-’68). Fu quindi inviato in Spagna: incaricato delle Mostre e Stampa interna (Madrid ’68-’75).
Nel 1975 fu destinato all’Indonesia. Lavorò in quella missione e più precisamente nel piccolo arcipelago delle Mentawai per tutti gli anni restanti della sua vita. “Le Mentawai – scriveva per Missionari Saveriani , marzo ’86 – è un mondo fatto di semplicità, genuinità e spontaneità, dove la ‘civiltà’ ancora non detta legge. È bello, aggiungeva successivamente, sentirsi tutti uguali e senza complessi; e più bello ancora vedere la gioia per averti con loro e come loro”.
Fu sempre impegnato come vice parroco o parroco nella pastorale delle comunità cristiane: 14 anni a Siberut (’76-’80; ’86-’87; ’96-’04; ‘10-’11); 8 a Sikabaluan (’81-’85; ’06-‘10); 4 a Sikakap (’87-’91); 7 Sipora (’91- ’96; ’04-’06).
Sempre in MS del marzo ’86 scriveva: “Il nostro grande sforzo attualmente, oltre a quello di creare una catechesi che possa far presa nell’anima della gente, è quello di assicurare alla popolazione di queste isole una certa crescita umana e sociale. Il nostro lavoro si svolge soprattutto nelle scuole. Il nostro maggior interesse è rivolto ai bambini, per formare le nuove generazioni”.
Vent’anni più tardi su MS marzo 2006 esprimeva disagio per la modernità, “che sta intaccando anche la semplicità della gente delle nostre isole. Sembra che l’uomo nato (forse) nella foresta, preferisca tornare alla legge della foresta, come se nulla di nuovo fosse accaduto con la venuta in mezzo a noi di Cristo salvatore. Le quindici comunità cristiane della missione – concludeva con una nota di speranza - sono abbastanza affiatate e impegnate. Penso che la loro testimonianza sia di buon auspicio, in mezzo alla disgregazione continua di altre chiese. Lo ripeto spesso ai cristiani della nostre comunità: non è la predica del missionario che crea nuovi cristiani; è la testimonianza dei cristiani autentici che convince e genera nuovi figli per il dono dello Spirito Santo”.
P. Silvano aveva un altro punto di forza, scoperto a Marano Lagunare fin dalla tenera età: “Chiedo di diventare missionario, convinto e consapevole di ciò che faccio e dei sacrifici che questo passo comporterà. Davanti al pensiero della splendida meta che il Signore mi ha messo davanti come traguardo di una lunga corsa spirituale, ogni sacrificio è un nulla”.

Fr. Silvano Zulian died in hospital in Padang, Indonesia, on 3 April 2014. Born in Marano Lagunare (Udine, Italy), on 16 April 1938, he was 75 years old.
The second last of seven children in a family of fishermen with great financial problems, but extraordinarily rich in faith, he was accustomed from a very young age to enduring physical toil whilst living a good and committed spiritual life.
He joined the Institute in Udine in 1950, where he attended the three years of junior high school and senior high school in Zelarino; he then moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate. The Novice Master thus described him in the presentation to First Profession: “He is quiet and not very communicative, but he is not a misanthropist; he enjoys play and is a cheerful young man, without being boisterous. He is diligent and active with a good spiritual piety”.
After his First Profession on 12 September 1956, he continued his studies in Desio (1956-59). He was prefect in Cremona (1959-61) and then completed his basic formation with four years of Theology in Parma, where he was ordained priest on 25 October 1964.
The report presenting him for admission to the ordained ministries said: “… he has considerable artistic talent. His abilities are practical rather than speculative. He willingly takes on hard work, showing generosity and a spirit of sacrifice. He is timid and reserved and a man of few words with the Superiors. He is generous, industrious and resourceful. He cultivates his piety, study and interest in matters related to the supernatural life”.
After ordination he was appointed teacher and vice-rector at Cremona (1965-68). He was then sent to Spain, where he was put in charge of the missionary exhibitions and internal press (Madrid 1968-75).
In 1975 he was assigned to Indonesia and he spent the rest of his life there, working in the small archipelago of the Mentawai. In March 1986, he spoke of his experience to Missionari Saveriani: “The Mentawai is a simple, genuine and spontaneous world, where ‘civilization does not yet lay down the law. It is wonderful to feel that we are all equal and without any kind of complex; it is even more wonderful to see how happy the people are to have you with them and live like them”.
He always worked as assistant priest or parish priest in the pastoral ministry to the Christian communities: he spent 14 years at Siberut (1976-80; 1986-87; 1996-2004; 2010-11); 8 years at Sikabaluan (1981-85; 2006-1010); 4 years at Sikakap (1987-91) and 7 years at Sipora (1991-96; 2004-06).
In Missionari Saveriani, March 1986, he said: “Our great effort currently, in addition to providing a catechesis that will leave its mark on the soul of the people, we are trying to ensure the human and social development of the people of these islands. We work most of all in the schools. We invest our greatest interest in the children in order to form the new generations”.
Twenty years later, in Missionari Saveriani, March 2006, he expressed his unease at modernity, “which is also undermining the simplicity of the people of our islands. It seems that man, born (perhaps) in the forest, prefers to return to the law of the forest, as if nothing new had taken place with the arrival of Christ the Savior in our midst”. Yet he concluded with some optimism: “The fifteen Christian communities of the mission are quite close-knit and committed. I think that their witness gives us hope in the midst of the constant disintegration of other churches. I often say to our Christians: it is not the sermons of the missionary that create new Christians, but the witness of the authentic Christians which convinces and generates new sons and daughters through the gift of the Holy Spirit”.
Fr. Silvano had discovered his deepest desire at a very early age: “I ask to become a missionary, well aware of what I am doing and of the sacrifices that this will entail. Compared with the thought of the wonderful goal that the Lord has put before me for my long spiritual journey, every sacrifice is as nothing”.
