In occasione della Giornata internazionale di preghiera e riflessione contro la tratta di persone (8 Febbraio), si è svolta, nella Basilica SS. Apostoli, una veglia di preghiera intitolata “Accendi una luce contro la tratta” che ha visto la partecipazione numerosa di laici, religiose e religiosi e di vari vescovi e cardinali rappresentanti dei Pontifici Consigli della Pastorale per i Migranti e di Giustizia e pace. La veglia, presieduta dal Vescovo Ausiliare di Roma Mons. Matteo Zuppi, è stata curata dall’Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, da anni impegnata in questo settore e dall’USMI. La celebrazione si è aperta con una processione con l’ immagine di St. Giuseppina Bakhita, collocata poi accanto all’altare centrale. Accompagnate da preghiere, canti e riflessioni, sono state presentate tre storie di speranza e libertà: Orazio (un minore siciliano), Gloria (una donna nigeriana) e Giovanni (un ragazzo del Ghana) che in modi diversi sono state vittime di questa forma di schiavitù moderna che è la tratta delle persone, un dramma che affligge anche molte delle popolazioni delle nostre missioni. L’auspicio è che ogni cristiano, attraverso una solidarietà attiva, possa essere una luce che ridia dignità umana, speranza e libertà a chi vive il dramma della tratta (decine di milioni di persone, soprattutto donne e bambini).

To mark the international day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking (8 February), the Basilica SS. Apostoli hosted a prayer vigil on the topic “Accendi una luce contro la tratta”, which was attended by many lay people, male and female religious and various bishops and cardinals representing the Pontifical Council for the care of Migrants and Itinerant People and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The vigil was presided over by the auxiliary Bishop of Rome Matteo Zuppi, and was organized by the Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, which has been working in this field for many years, and by the USMI. The celebration began with a procession with the image of St. Josephine Bakhita, which was placed next to the main altar. Accompanied by prayers, hymns and reflections, three stories of hope and freedom were presented: Orazio (a minor from Sicily), Gloria (a Nigerian woman) and Giovanni (a boy from Ghana) who, in various ways, have been victims of this modern form of slavery that is human trafficking, a traumatic experience that also afflicts many people in our missions. The hope is that every Cristian, through an active solidarity, can be a light that restores human dignity, hope and freedom to those who fall victim to human trafficking( tens of millions of people, especially women and children).
