“La pace sia con tutti voi. Verso una pace disarmata e disarmante”: si intitola così il messaggio di Leone XIV per la LIX Giornata mondiale della pace che si celebra il 1° gennaio 2026. Con il suo messaggio, Papa Leone ci riporta alla Loggia delle Benedizioni, nel giorno della sua elezione (8 maggio 2025), facendoci riascoltare il saluto evangelico: “La pace sia con voi”. Le parole del Papa sono forti e profondamente controcorrente. Il Messaggio propone una critica netta a un certo “realismo” oggi dominante nel discorso politico e mediatico, che identifica la sicurezza con la forza, le armi, il riarmo e i linguaggi nazionalisti della paura. Il Papa mostra come questo realismo sia in realtà una visione parziale e distorta del mondo, che dimentica la luce e si lascia guidare dalle tenebre e dall’insicurezza. A questa logica egli oppone un realismo diverso e più profondo, fondato sulla capacità di riconoscere che la “pace esiste” già ed è una “presenza che vuole abitarci”. La pace, afferma il Papa, non è debolezza: “possiede un potere mite, capace di resistere alla violenza e di vincerla”. Per questo parla di una “pace disarmata e disarmante, umile e perseverante”. Prima di essere una meta futura, la pace è un cammino da custodire e da imparare. In questo senso, il Messaggio è anche una critica alle politiche educative e comunicative che diffondono una percezione permanente di minaccia. Al contrario, il Papa invita a educarci alla pace, alla memoria e alla fiducia, perché solo così si può superare l’irrazionalità di un rapporto tra i popoli fondato sulla paura e sul dominio della forza. Peace be with you all: Towards an “unarmed and disarming” peace: this is the title of Leo XIV’s message for the upcoming 59^th World Day of Peace on January 1^st, 2026. With this message, Pope Leo takes us back to the Central Loggia of the Vatican Basilica on the day of his election (May 8^th, 2025), and makes us listen again to the Gospel greeting: “Peace be with you all.” The Pope’s words are strong and go deeply against the current. His Message offers a clear criticism of a certain type of “realism” prevalent in political and media discourse today that identifies security with force, weapons, rearmament, and a nationalist rhetoric based on fear. The Pope illustrates how this realism is actually a partial and distorted view of the world, which forgets the light and allows itself to be guided by darkness and insecurity. He counters this logic with a different and deeper realism, based on the ability to recognize that “peace exists” already and “wants to dwell within us.” Peace, says the Pope, is not weakness: “It has the gentle power to enlighten and expand our understanding; it resists and overcomes violence.” This is why he speaks of a type of “peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering.” Before being a goal to achieve in future, peace is a path to be cherished and learned. In this sense, the Message is also a critique of educational and communication policies that spread a permanent perception of threat. On the contrary, the Pope invites us to train ourselves for peace, memory, and trust, because this is the only way we can overcome the irrational relationships among peoples that are based on fear and domination through force.
