“Buyengero, 30 settembre 1995”. È una delle date che restano per sempre scolpite nei nostri cuori. Il Vescovo di Bururi ha voluto inserire questo giorno nel calendario liturgico diocesano: ogni anno come famiglia diocesana, faremo memoria dei martiri del Buyengero, p. Ottorino Maule, p. Aldo Marchiol e la laica Katina Gubert. Ci siamo uniti alla comunità ecclesiale di Buyengero, ai sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose di numerose parrocchie della diocesi di Bururi guidati dal Vescovo Salvator Niciteretse. Da Bujumbura e Bugwana eravamo in una sessantina di partecipanti a percorrere la strada che porta alla località del martirio e che, dal giorno dei tragici avvenimenti, consideriamo luogo privilegiato, una vera e propria cattedra per lezioni di vita e di missione. Tutti i confratelli che lavorano in Burundi, un buon numero di Laici Saveriani che con entusiasmo vivono il carisma di San Guido Maria Conforti e i nostri giovani studenti in formazione a Bujumbura erano presenti nella celebrazione eucaristica. Abbiamo sentito molto vicina anche la presenza dei parenti e amici di p. Ottorino, di p. Aldo e della laica Katina, sentendoli spiritualmente accanto a noi. Con trepidazione ed un immenso desiderio, intendiamo seguire le orme dei nostri tre martiri che, a distanza di 28 anni dal loro sacrificio-offerta, continuano ad essere per noi dei veri e coraggiosi testimoni di fratellanza, di giustizia e di pace in Burundi e nei paesi dei grandi laghi d’Africa. “Buyengero, September 30^th, 1995”, this is one of the dates which remain for ever engraved in our hearts. The Bishop of Bururi wanted to include this day in the liturgical calendar of the Diocese: every year, as diocesan family, we are going to remember the martyrs of Buyengero: Fr. Ottorino Maule, Fr. Aldo Marchiol and the lay missionary Miss Katina Gubert. We gathered with the ecclesial community of Buyengero, priests, and men and women religious from numerous parishes of the Diocese of Bururi led by Bishop Salvator Niciteretse. From Bujumbura and Bugwana we were about sixty participants; we walked along the road leading to the place of the martyrdom which, since the tragic day of that event, we consider a favourite and true school of life and mission. All the confreres working in Burundi, a good number of Xaverian laity, who live St Guido Maria Conforti’s charism with much enthusiasm, and our young students in formation at Bujumbura attended the Eucharistic celebration. We also felt the presence of the relatives and friends of Fr. Ottorino, of Fr. Aldo and of lay missionary Katina, for we knew they were spiritually united with us. Our resolve is to follow in the footsteps of our three martyrs. 28 years after their sacrifice/offering, they continue being true and courageous witnesses of brotherhood, justice, and peace for us in Burundi and in the countries of the Great African Lakes.
