Da 34 anni, il 24 marzo, giorno in cui si ricorda l’assassinio dell’arcivescovo di San Salvador, San Oscar Arnulfo Romero, ucciso nel 1980, la Chiesa celebra la Giornata dei martiri missionari. È una giornata di preghiera, digiuno e solidarietà per ricordare tutti i missionari che hanno dato la vita affinché i loro fratelli e sorelle potessero ricevere “vita in abbondanza”.

Quest’anno la Chiesa ha scelto come tema “Gente di primavera”. I missionari uccisi a causa dell’annuncio e della testimonianza della luce del Vangelo sono persone di primavera. La primavera è un tempo di speranza, è una nuova creazione. Dopo il periodo invernale in cui tutto sembra morto, la primavera è una stagione in cui la vita torna a fiorire, la speranza ritorna.  Come dice l’evangelista Giovanni: “…se il chicco di grano che è caduto nella terra non muore, rimane solo; ma, se muore, porta molto frutto» (Gv 12,24). I missionari martiri sono come chicchi di grano caduti nella terra. Il loro cadere nella terra non finisce lì ma porta molto frutto.

Nella nostra famiglia carismatica Saveriana, attendiamo con gioia e impegno la beatificazione dei servi di Dio p. Ottorino Maule, p. Aldo Marchiol, della laica Catina Gubert, uccisi a Buyengero (Burundi), insieme ai 40 seminaristi uccisi a Buta (Burundi) e p. Michel Kayoya, anch’egli ucciso in Burundi. Attendiamo operosi la beatificazione di questi testimoni del Vangelo per i fratelli e le sorelle burundesi e per l’umanità. Hanno testimoniato l’amore di Cristo fino a “cadere nella terra” per essere la primavera per il popolo burundese, per la Chiesa del Burundi e del mondo intero. Hanno combattuto l’ingiustizia sociale e hanno aiutato i burundesi a superare i conflitti etnici per vivere la riconciliazione e la fraternità.  A causa della loro fede in Gesù Cristo, hanno accettato di versare il loro sangue per fecondare la terra burundese, affinché i burundesi potessero vivere l’amore e la fraternità donatici dal Signore Gesù. 

Continuiamo, quindi, ad affidarci a loro, alla loro intercessione, a pregare per loro e con loro, affinché tutta l’umanità possa vivere la fratellanza universale; vivere in un mondo dove i conflitti vengono vinti da figli e fratelli, e perché Cristo possa essere conosciuto e amato da tutti.  (Renovat Bikorimana sx)

Beginning 34 years ago, on March 24—the day commemorating the assassination of the Archbishop of San Salvador, Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero, killed in 1980—the Church has celebrated the Day of the Missionary Martyrs. It is a day of prayer, fasting, and solidarity to remember all the missionaries who have given their lives so that their brothers and sisters might receive “an abundant life.”

This year, the Church has chosen “Springtime People” as its theme. Missionaries who were killed because of their proclamation and witness to the light of the Gospel are truly springtime people. Spring is hope; it is a new creation. After the winter season, when everything seems dead, spring is the season when life blossoms anew, and hope is reawakened. As the evangelist John says: “…unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (Jn. 12:24) The missionary martyrs are like grains of wheat that have fallen into the earth. Their falling into the ground does not end there but bears much fruit.

Within our Xaverian charismatic family, we await with joy and perseverance the beatification of the Servants of God Fr. Ottorino Maule, Fr. Aldo Marchiol, the laywoman Catina Gubert—killed in Buyengero (Burundi)—together with the 40 seminarians killed in Buta (Burundi) and Fr. Michel Kayoya, also killed in Burundi. We eagerly await the beatification of these witnesses to the Gospel for the people of Burundi and for all humanity. They bore witness to Christ’s love to the point of “falling to the ground,” becoming like spring for the people of Burundi, the Local Church, and the whole world. They fought against social injustice and helped the people of Burundi overcome ethnic conflicts, enabling them to live in reconciliation and fraternity. Because of their faith in Jesus Christ, they accepted to shed their blood to make the soil of Burundi fruitful, so that its people might enjoy the love and fraternity given to us by the Lord Jesus. 

Let us therefore continue to entrust ourselves to them, to their intercession, to pray for them and with them, so that all humanity may live in universal brotherhood. To live in a world where children and brothers overcome conflicts, and where Christ may be known and loved by all.  (Renovat Bikorimana, sx)
