Siamo (7 giovani italiani e il sottoscritto) rientrati in Italia mercoledì pomeriggio dalla nostra esperienza missionaria (18 giorni), vissuta intensamente con i 6 padri Saveriani incontrati (Bangkok – a Klong Toei, a Mae Sot (km 48) e a Umphang) e alcuni dei loro collaboratori giovani tailandesi; fatta nelle sue varie modalità: di ascolto con gli anziani/ammalati nelle baraccopoli, di gioco con i bambini sia a casa nostra che nelle baraccopoli, e di scambio culturale (grazie al bagaglio d’inglese che abbiamo) con gli alunni liceali a Bangkok e Samut Sachon.

Sono stati giorni caratterizzati sia, ovviamente, dalla fede che di cammino e di fratellanza. Di cammino perché eravamo sempre per strade, dalle 08.00 del mattino fino alle 19.00 di sera, verso una meta unica: l’incontro con l’altro, lasciandoci arricchiti anche solo dal loro modo di apprezzare la vita e di valorizzare il poco che hanno. Di cammino perché proprio lungo il cammino avviene l’ascolto e l’accoglienza, la disponibilità di abbandonare i propri schemi e le proprie strutture per accogliere una visione altra della realtà che ci viene incontro, per non allontanare, ma accogliere altri compagni di viaggio lungo il cammino.

Di fratellanza perché, il modo con cui i nostri confratelli e i loro giovani laici ci hanno accolto e ci hanno inseriti nella loro realtà missionaria, ci hanno fatto sentire in casa nostra, tanto da considerare nostri fratelli gli ultimi (bambini, anziani ammalati) con e per i quali vivono la loro missione. Se all’andata volevamo essere i loro compagni di viaggio, al ritorno, invece, ci sentiamo i loro fratelli. Ed ecco è la missione!

We (i.e. seven Italian young people and the present writer) returned to Italy on Wednesday afternoon from a missionary experience (18 days) – an intense moment of life with the six Xaverian fathers and their young Thai collaborators whom we met in Bangkok, Klong Toei, Mae Sot (a.k.a. “48^th km”), and Umphang. This experience had different forms: listening to the elderly and sick in the slums; playing games with the children, either in our house, or in the slums; and cultural exchanging with high-school students in Bangkok and Samut Sachon (thanks to the fact that we can speak some English).

Those days were characterized, obviously, by faith but also travelling and brotherhood. We say travelling because we were constantly on the road, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Our destination was only one: the encounter with others, to allow them to enrich us with their appreciation of life and the little they possess. Travelling because it is along the way that listening and welcoming occur – as long as one is willing to abandon his/her stereotypes and mentality so as to welcome a vision of reality that the encounter offers, and as long as one does not push away but welcomes new fellow travellers along the road.

We say brotherhood because the way our confreres and their young collaborators have welcomed and introduced us in their missionary reality, and made us feel at home, to the point that we too considered the last ones (children, the elderly, the sick) with whom and for whom our confreres live in mission as our own brothers and sisters. While we had arrived with the intention to be their fellow travellers, by the time we left we felt like their brothers. This is also what mission is all about!
