Dal 5 al 9 luglio 2022, i Saveriani del Brasile Nord hanno vissuto una settima di Esercizi Spirituali guidati dal Gesuita p. Vanildo Pereira da Silvo Filho. Lo stile ignaziano e le meditazioni del predicatore (riportiamo in seguito alcuni dei suoi punti), ci hanno aiutato a vivere questi giorni nella spiritualità armonica di un'ecologia integrale: sentire e sapere che siamo terra; che apparteniamo alla terra e che siamo figli e figlie di Terra Viva (Gaya) che ci ospita, ci accoglie e ci protegge. Come umanità (humus) e Terra, formiamo un'unica realtà splendida, lucente, fragile e piena di vigore. Come i tralci sono uniti alla vite così anche noi siamo uniti alla vita, apparteniamo alla comunità cosmica, creata e sostenuta da Dio.

La preghiera ci aiuta ad accedere alla linfa della vita. Di qui la necessità di implorare misericordia per l'abbandono della casa comune, per gli squilibri generati, per l'indifferenza di fronte al grido della terra e degli esseri che accoglie. Nasce il desiderio di cambiare rotta, di tornare alla fonte, all'equilibrio ecologico. In termini ignaziani ciò si qualifica come desolazione comunitaria: l'inferno. Tuttavia, l'esperienza cristiana afferma che l'essere umano è riscattabile, perché è dal traboccare della misericordia divina che è germogliata la vita, perché la misericordia divina è sempre creatrice ed originale. Quando contempliamo l'immensità cosmica, l'evoluzione, che ispira stupore, ricordiamo che la Trinità, sorgente dell'esistenza, ama profondamente la sua Creazione e la ritiene degna dell'Incarnazione: “Siamo chiamati a diventare gli strumenti di Dio Padre perché il nostro pianeta sia ciò che Egli ha sognato nel crearlo e risponda al suo progetto di pace, bellezza e pienezza” (Laudato Sì n. 53). From July 5^th to 9^th, 2022, the Xaverians of North Brazil spent one week of Spiritual Exercises together. The retreat was led by Jesuit Fr. Vanildo Pereira da Silvo Filho. The preacher’s Ignatian style and meditations (below we summarise some of his thoughts) helped us live those days within a harmonic spirituality of integral ecology: feeling and knowing that we are earth, that we belong to earth and are sons and daughters of Living Earth (Gaia) which shelters us, welcomes us and protects us. Humanity (humus) and Earth form one single reality – a splendid, shining, fragile and yet full-of-life reality. Like branches are united to the vine, so we are united to life, belong to the cosmic community that has been created and is supported by God.

Prayer helps us gain access to life blood. And in prayer we discover the necessity to implore mercy for abandoning our common house, for causing imbalances, for disregarding the cry of the earth and the living beings it shelters. Changing direction, going back to the source and to environmental balance is the desire arising in our heart. In Ignatian terms, this is called community desolation: hell. Nevertheless, Christian experience affirms that the human being can be ransomed, for such experience derives from the overflowing mercy of God in whom life itself blossomed, for divine mercy constantly creates and is always original. Whenever we contemplate the vastness of the universe and evolution, we are filled with wonder, and remember that the Trinity, source of life, loves her own Creation, and deems it to be worthy of the Incarnation: “we are called to be instruments of God our Father, so that our planet might be what he desired when he created it and correspond with his plan for peace, beauty and fullness.” (Laudato Sì, 53).
