Dall’omelia di papa Benedetto XVI nella celebrazione per la canonizzazione dei Beati Guido Maria Conforti (1865-1931), Luigi Guanella (1842-1915) e Bonifacia Rodríguez De Castro (1837-1905):

…Il Salmo 17, poc’anzi proclamato, invita ad abbandonarsi con fiducia nelle mani del Signore, che è “fedele al suo consacrato” (v. 51). Questo atteggiamento interiore ha guidato la vita e il ministero di san Guido Maria Conforti. Fin da quando, ancora fanciullo, dovette superare l’opposizione del padre per entrare in Seminario, diede prova di un carattere fermo nel seguire la volontà di Dio, nel corrispondere in tutto a quella caritas Christi che, nella contemplazione del Crocifisso, lo attraeva a sé. Egli sentì forte l’urgenza di annunciare questo amore a quanti non ne avevano ancora ricevuto l’annuncio, e il motto “Caritas Christi urget nos” (cfr 2Cor 5,14) sintetizza il programma dell’Istituto missionario a cui egli, appena trentenne, diede vita: una famiglia religiosa posta interamente a servizio dell’evangelizzazione, sotto il patrocinio del grande apostolo dell’Oriente san Francesco Saverio. Questo slancio apostolico san Guido Maria fu chiamato a viverlo nel ministero episcopale prima a Ravenna e poi a Parma: con tutte le sue forze si dedicò al bene delle anime a lui affidate, soprattutto di quelle che si erano allontanate dalla via del Signore…

Psalm 17, just read, invites us to abandon ourselves with trust into the hands of the Lord, who is “steadfast... to his anointed” (Ps 18[17]:51). This interior attitude guided the life and ministry of St Guido Maria Conforti. Since, as a boy, he had had to overcome his father’s opposition to his entering the Seminary. He displayed strong character in following God’s will and by conforming in everything to the caritas Christi, that, in the contemplation of the Crucifix, attracted him to it. He felt strongly the urgency to announce this love to those who had not yet received the news and the motto “Caritas Christi urget nos” (cf. 2 Cor 5:14), summed up the Missionary Institute’s programme, to which he, after just turning 30-years-old, brought to life: a religious family completely at the service of evangelization, under the patronage of the great “Patron of the Orient”, St Francis Xavier. St Guido Maria was called to live this apostolic zeal in his episcopal ministry first in Ravenna and then in Parma. With all his strength he dedicated himself to the good of the souls entrusted to him, especially those who had moved away from the Lord’s path.
