La Giornata Mondiale dei Poveri, celebrata nella domenica che precede la solennità di Cristo Re, è un dono che Papa Francesco ci offre ogni anno. Ci ricorda che siamo chiamati ad essere vicini a chi vive in condizioni di disagio e di emarginazione. Quest’anno, il tema scelto dal Santo Padre è tratto dal libro di Tobia: “Non distogliere lo sguardo dal povero” (Tb 4, 7). Queste parole sono un invito a non ignorare la realtà della povertà che ci circonda, ma ad aprirci alla compassione e alla condivisione. Il Papa ci propone la figura di Tobi, un uomo giusto che non si stancava di soccorrere i bisognosi, come modello di fedeltà a Dio e di amore al prossimo. Noi, Saveriani, sentiamo forte questa chiamata, perché il nostro carisma ci spinge a riconoscere in ogni persona un fratello da amare e da servire. Il nostro servizio in diverse parti del mondo vuole essere una testimonianza di questo amore, che cerca di alleviare le sofferenze e di promuovere la dignità umana. In questo momento storico così difficile, non possiamo dimenticare che tra i più poveri ci sono soprattutto coloro che subiscono le conseguenze delle violenze e delle guerre che insanguinano il nostro pianeta. World Day of the Poor, which falls on the Sunday preceding the Solemnity of Christ the King, is a gift Pope Francis gives us every year. It reminds us of our being called to reach out to those who live in hard conditions and are marginalised. The theme selected by the Holy Father for this year is drawn from the Book of Tobit: “Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tob 4:7). These words are an invitation not to ignore the reality of poverty that surrounds us, rather to open ourselves to compassion and sharing. The Pope indicates the figure of Tobit, a right man who never tired of helping the needy, as a model of loyalty to God and love for the neighbour. We, Xaverians, feel this calling very much, because our charism impels us to recognise in each person a brother to love and serve. Our service in different parts of the world is meant to give witness to such love: a love that attempts to alleviate suffering and promote human dignity. At a difficult historical juncture such as the present one, we must not forget that, among the poorest, are especially those who suffer as a consequence of the violence and wars that rage on in our planet.
