(1943-2019)
Il 18 dicembre 2019, verso le ore 04:40, si è spento dopo lunga malattia, nella Casa Madre di Parma, P. Giuseppe Tavera. Aveva 76 anni, essendo nato a Ittiri (SS), il 08.03.1943.
In seguito all’incontro con padre Pacifico Fellini, il giovane Peppino decise di diventare un missionario (cfr. testimonianza della sorella Lucia Tavera). Entrato tra i Saveriani nell’ottobre del 1954, Peppino incomincia a frequentare le scuole medie, prima a Nizza M. (1954-1956), poi ad Alzano L. (1956-1958), a Cremona (1958-1959), ed infine a Zelarino (1959-1961).
Nell’ottobre del 1961 Peppino parte per San Pietro in Vincoli per l’anno di noviziato alla fine del quale emette la Prima Professione religiosa-missionaria (03.10.1962). In seguito frequenta il liceo a Desio (1962-1963) e a Tavernerio (1963-1965), la propedeutica a Parma (1965-1966) e l’anno di prefettato a Macomer.
Inizia poi gli studi di teologia a Parma (1967-1968) che completa a Franklin (U.S.A, 1968-1971).
Il 20.03.1971 viene ordinato presbitero a Franklin dove resta impegnato nel servizio della formazione (1971-1972) e poi nella pastorale giovanile (1972-1974).
Nel 1975 p. Tavera viene destinato al Burundi dove arriva dopo un anno di studio del francese a Parigi. Dopo qualche mese di studio della lingua locale a Bujumbura, p. Tavera viene destinato come vice parroco a Murago (1977-1978), a Gasorwe (1978-1979) a Kitaramuka (1979-1981) ed infine a Matara (1981-1983). In seguito gli viene chiesto di lavorare come parroco a Matara (1983-1987).
Il 20.08.1987 p. Tavera vive un’esperienza traumatica: l’espulsione dal Burundi.
Dopo un anno di studio a Roma, viene destinato a Londra, alla casa di Finchley, dove svolge il servizio di Rettore (1988-1990). Dopo aver terminato gli studi di Scienze Bibliche, p. Tavera viene destinato al Burundi dove arriva nel dicembre 1991 lavorando a Gisanze, prima, come vice parroco (1992-1993) e, poi, come parroco (1993-1996).
Destinato all’Italia nel maggio 1996 vi rimane fino al 2000, svolgendo il ruolo di animatore missionario a Salerno.
Nel 2000 viene trasferito in Gran Bretagna; qui lavora a Londra, nella casa di Finchley (2000-2003), quindi a Coatbridge (2003-2006), e a Glasgow come vice parroco (2006-2010), e poi ancora a Londra (2010-2012) come animatore missionario.
Rientrato definitivamente in Italia nel dicembre 2012, viene destinato a Desio dove svolge il suo ministero.
Nel maggio del 2015 viene trasferito a Parma.
Il 18 dicembre 2019 viene portato dagli angeli al cospetto dell’Altissimo per contemplare la sua gloria e ricevere la ricompensa del servitore fedele.

Fr. Giuseppe Tavera, died in the Mother House of Parma on December 18th, 2019, at about 4:40 am, after a long illness. Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was born on March 8th, 1943 in the town of Ittiri (SS), and he was now 76 years old.
Following his meeting with Fr. Pacifico Fellini, the young Peppino decided to become a missionary (see the testimony of his sister Lucia Tavera). He entered the Xaverians in October 1954. He first attended Middle School in the Xaverian house of Nizza Monferrato (1954-1956). Continued with his education in the houses of Alzano Lombardo (1956-1958), then Cremona (1958-1959), and finally, Zelarino (1959-1961).
In October 1961 Peppino left for San Pietro in Vincoli for the year of Novitiate, at the end of which he celebrated his First Religious Missionary Profession (October 3rd, 1962). Then he went to Desio (1962-1963) and Tavernerio (1963-1965) for his College Studies, year of Propaedeutic in Parma (1965-1966) and the year of Prefect of Students in the house of Macomer (Sardinia).
Giuseppe Tavera began his studies of Theology in the house of Parma (1967-1968) and completed them in the house of Franklin (WIS, USA - 1968-1971).
On March 20th, 1971, Giuseppe Tavera was ordained Priest. He remained in USA, helping in the Ministry of Formation (1971-1972) and in Youth Ministry (1972-1974).
In 1975, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was assigned to mission ministry in Burundi, where he arrived after a year of Study of the French Language in Paris. After a few months of study of the local language in Bujumbura, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was assigned as assistant Parish Priest in Murago (1977-1978), Gasorwe (1978-1979), in Kitaramuka (1979-1981), and finally Matara (1981-1983). He was then named Parish Priest of the Parish in Matara (1983-1987). Fr. Giuseppe Tavera, then, went through a most tragic experience: expulsion from Burundi.
After a year of Study in Rome, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was assigned to the xaverian house of Finchley (London – UK) and was named Rector of the xaverian community (1988-1990). Having finished with his courses in Bible Studies, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was re-assigned to Burundi. There he arrived in December 1991. He was, first, assistant Parish Priest in the Parish of Gisanze (1992-1993), and, subsequently, its Parish Priest (1993-1996).
Assigned to do mission work in Italy (1996 until 2000), Giuseppe Tavera was busy in the ministry of Mission Education in the house and area of Salerno (IT).
In the year 2000, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was re-assigned to work in Mission Education and Ministry in the United Kingdom, first, in London (The Xaverian House of Finchley) (2000-2003). Then, in Coatbridge (2003-2006); then, assistant Parish Priest in Glasgow (2006-2010), then, again in London (2010-2012) in the ministry of Mission Education.
Fr. Giuseppe Tavera returned permanently to Italy in December 2012. He was assigned to the House of Desio and there he ministered. In May 2015, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was transferred to the xaverian house of Parma.
On December 18th, 2019, Fr. Giuseppe Tavera was brought by the Angels before the Most High to contemplate His glory and to receive the reward of the faithful servant.
