In Cina

A Vicenza

Characteristics of the Holiness of Fr. Pietro Uccelli

Every Saint is a child of their times and their spirituality typically reflects the times in which they lived; nevertheless, there is something common to every time and spirituality, a fixed point, a central and supporting pillar: an intimate relationship with Christ, which makes a person adopt His way of thinking and lifestyle.

Holiness is a transforming union with Christ. We therefore have a parameter for judging every form and greatness of holiness. The Church, by declaring the heroic nature of the virtues of Fr. Pietro Uccelli, states that his life conformed with the Gospel and proposes that we should imitate it, even though a sign from God, which we call a miracle, is necessary before he can be beatified and venerated publicly.

What are the characteristics of his holiness that can inspire us today as we strive to embody an “apostolic” spirituality that befits the sons of St. Guido Maria Conforti?

Preparation for China

Word of God, Prayer, Works of mercy

After his ordination, Fr. Pietro served in the ministry in the parishes of Cavriago, Piolo and Poviglio. From the very beginning of his priesthood, he displayed signs of holiness that surpassed his times: “He showed an awareness that the most important aspect of the pastoral ministry is to embody the Word that one proclaims. Here was a young priest who, in spite of his many pastoral commitments, always found time to meditate on the Word of God, for union with God in prayer and for works of mercy. This life was surprising for its consistency, its specific orientations and its total commitment to the service of the Christian community” (126).

Gratuitous preaching

Fr. Uccelli thus spoke about his pastoral service during the first years of his priesthood: “It was quite a bitter experience to work as hard as my physical and intellectual abilities allowed me, and without claiming any reward, only to receive, if not words of contempt, at least words that were devoid of Christian charity. One thing alone comforts me: I seek no reward from the world or from people for my poor efforts, but only from God to whose glory I commit myself”. ( 236)

Preference for the poor, the sick and those far from God

“Fr. Pietro spared no effort to help the sick, indeed he barely had time to pray the breviary. …(150) The poor were the privileged ones of his pastoral ministry. He never missed an opportunity to speak out on behalf of the poor and this might explain why many priests criticized him (172). “The poor and those far from God were the constant object of his apostolic activity. There was no lack of pastoral consolations because a number of people from Poviglio began to practice their Christian faith once again”. (173)

In a spirit of poverty and generosity, the Servant of God gave away any money he received. (179)

Martyrdom as “a normal witness” for the Priest

The main emphasis is on mysticism. Fr. Pietro had an intense experience of Christ as his model; his union with Christ led him to experience the same sentiments of love that Christ nurtured throughout His life, even until the supreme gift of his life on Calvary. Fr. Uccelli’s dream concentrated on Calvary: if Christ suffered, the priest too must suffer, even to the point of martyrdom. (156)

During novitiate, under the guidance of the Founder St. Guido, Fr. Uccelli cultivated three essential values in preparation for China: Christocentrism, the Eucharist, the Family life.

In China

Among the Xaverians in China, Fr. Uccelli was considered to be the one with the best command of the language.

As a missionary, he was a child of his times, but there was something in him that can inspire us today, for example, the “Confortian” Christocentrism (The missionary must be filled with Christ if he is to proclaim Him and make Him present. The missionary’s is the style of Christ. The means used by the missionary are the means used by Christ. These were the almost daily reflections that Conforti proposed to those who were getting ready to leave for the mission (479-480). Fr. Uccelli had a great respect for the local culture. He returned to Italy with a great number of boxes containing Chinese objects for the museum. From a strictly missionary perspective he also left something to us. He had books of biblical exegesis sent from Italy (480), in imitation of his novice master Conforti, who always had the Bible with him, as well as a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, which led him to prefer a room close to the Chapel (Conforti advised his missionaries “to keep the Eucharistic Jesus always at the center of their thoughts and affection”).

His preference for the last was another characteristic of his missionary activity: he took care of a seriously handicapped child as a sign of the Lord’s blessing (“Yesterday I found a one-year child who is very handicapped, with no hands, just one foot and with sight problems. Even his one foot has only four toes. I cherish this child that the Lord sent to me yesterday, at the time of the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. I hope that the Lord has sent him to me as a blessing.” (480).

He was attentive to the formation of Christian leaders, not only catechists, but priests and religious (481). He promoted the collaboration of lay people in the apostolate. (481)

In Vicenza

During his long stay in Vicenza, Fr. Uccelli was always a missionary priest and the house always open to the poor and penitents. His funeral was attended by many people who had never been seen inside a church (918). Fr. Uccelli formed the missionary students above all by his example (604). His method was based on respect, love, understanding and dialogue (658). While the poor and sinners were always welcome, the heart of the house was always the Chapel, especially the tabernacle, where the community gathered for liturgical celebrations, adoration and thanksgiving. Although he championed devotion to St. Joseph, the most important celebration of the Vicenza house was Corpus Domini and its solemn procession.

He always kept alive his desire to return to China and die a martyr’s death (605)
