60 anni fa ! Sperimento gioia per essere stato chiamato e per essere  entrato in questa famiglia Saveriana. Sento anche tanta sofferenza nel vedere la piaga degli scandali nella Chiesa, per gli abusi tanto mediatizzati e per i suicidi causati da tali scandali. Dopo 60 anni, ringrazio per essere arrivato anch’io da “tanto lontano” e poter ancora annunciare con gioia il Vangelo del Signore, celebrare, ascoltare le confessioni ed essere servitore della Sua misericordia a tempo pieno in mezzo a questo amato popolo burundese. Un dono troppo grande. In mezzo alla gente, a comunità vive, in comunione con i compagni di sacerdozio della mia diocesi di Trento, dei Saveriani,  assieme a p. Pio Mattevi, defunto, e con p. Gabriele  Ferrari, a Tavernerio.

Signore, come sono stupende le tue opere! Colui che è, che era e che viene, l'Onnipotente. Forse dovrei scusarmi per aver espresso tutta la mia gioia riconoscente di poter essere ancora in Burundi, alla mia veneranda età, al lavoro, con la gente e per la gente, ma mi sento veramente benedetto, incondizionatamente. Riconosco, allo stesso tempo di aver spesso sottovalutato la grazia, la forza, la benedizione e la bellezza di essere missionario della Buona Notizia ogni giorno. It was 60 years ago! I am filled with joy for having been called and having joined this Xaverian family. I feel also much pain at the sight of the wounds left by scandals within the Church, for the abuses so sensationalised by the media and the suicides caused by such scandals. After 60 years, I am grateful that I too have come from ‘so far away’ and can still joyfully proclaim the Gospel of the Lord; I can still celebrate, hear confessions and be a full-time servant of His mercy among this beloved Burundian people. Being in the midst of people and lively communities, in communion with companions of priesthood from the same diocese of Trento, of Xaverians, along with the late Fr. Pio Mattevi, and Fr. Gabriele Ferrari in Tavernerio, this gift is too great.

Lord, your works are wonderful! [The one] who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. Perhaps I should apologise for expressing all my grateful joy for being able to remain in Burundi, at my old age, working, with the people and for the people, but I feel truly blessed, unconditionally. At the same time, I recognize that I have often underestimated the grace, strength, blessing and beauty of being a missionary of the Good News every day. (Kamenge, Burundi, Modesto Todeschi s.x.)
