Giovedì 11 novembre abbiamo celebrato un compleanno tutto speciale: p. Michele d’Erchie sx, nato a Montemesola di Taranto l’11 novembre 1930, compie 91 anni!

P. Michele é stato missionario nella regione dei Grandi Laghi, dove spende generosamente le sue energie prima tra Burundi e Congo (1964-1981) e poi in Camerun (1982-1992), ricoprendo, in quelle circoscrizioni, anche incarichi di responsabilità e di direzione. Ha fatto anche parte della Direzione Generale dei Missionari Saveriani. Avremmo voluto che ci raccontasse lui stesso qualche episodio della sua ricchissima vita, ma lui stesso ha invece voluto che ci unissimo a lui con la preghiera per ringraziare il Dio della vita e della misericordia. Come confratelli della stessa famiglia religiosa, pur rispettando il silenzio e l’intimità, ci sentiamo in dovere di dire a p. Michele un forte grazie.

Ci uniamo, quindi, a lui per ringraziare Dio per il dono della vita di questo confratello, per tutto il bene che ha seminato in particolare nelle missioni del Burundi e del Camerun, per il suo grande amore, vero e sincero, alla famiglia saveriana. (Luigi Lo Stocco sx)

On Thursday, November 11^th, we celebrated a very special birthday: Fr. Michele d’Erchie, born in Montemesola di Taranto on November 11^th 1930, turned 91!

Fr. Michele has served the mission in the African region of the Great Lakes, where he generously spent his energies between Burundi and Congo (1964-1981), and later in Cameroon (1982-1992). In those circumscriptions he also fulfilled the duties of superior. At one point, Fr. Michele has been member of the General Direction of the Xaverian Missionaries. We would have preferred that he himself told us some episodes from his very rich life, but he insisted that we should join him in prayer of thanksgiving to the God of life and mercy. Although respecting his silence and privacy, as confreres in the same religious family, we feel the duty to express our deep gratitude to Fr. Michele.

Therefore, we are united in thanking God for the gift of this confrere’s life, for all the good he has disseminated especially in the missions of Burundi and Cameroon, and for his great, true, and sincere love for the Xaverian family.  (Luigi Lo Stocco s.x.)
