Grazie! (Álvaro Aguado Razo sx)

XXXI WORLD DAY OF THE SICK: “TAKE CARE OF HIM”

On Saturday, February 11th, we will celebrate the XXXI World Day of the Sick. In his message for the occasion, Pope Francis speaks of “compassion as a synodal exercise of healing.” It is a call for a “healing” compassion, according to Jesus’ style, by taking care as good Samaritans of those whom the Lord has placed in our path: “Illness is part of our human condition. Yet, if illness is experienced in isolation and abandonment, unaccompanied by care and compassion, it can become inhumane. When we go on a journey with others, it is not unusual for someone to feel sick, to have to stop because of fatigue or of some mishap along the way. It is precisely in such moments that we see how we are walking together…

Whenever in various Xaverian communities we pray for our sick confreres in the Mother House of Parma and in places where there are other confreres with some sort of infirmity, we entrust each one of them and their “guardian angels” to the Lord, so that together we may walk along the same path, with dignity and family spirit.

Knowing both the brother’s sickness and one’s own sickness helps become “friends” of sickness itself. Let us ask the Lord to make us know, more and more, the totality and fullness of our existence, so as to live hand in hand with Him, who called us into existence.

Sickness is a “treasure” for through it we learn, every day, that the Spirit of the Lord lives in us. Even if the body cannot function and the mind is clouded, our person lives, and therein the Lord educates us in those virtues which, perhaps, we may have forgotten: serenity, trust, patience, calm – also for interior prayer –, surrender and total oblation.

Sickness is never a punishment from God, rather it is an integral part of our human condition. Moreover, we all must learn to view it as a “gift” from the Lord, for if we accept all the good that we receive in our experiences, why not accepting also the limits which we may encounter in this reality?

In all of this, the Mother of God caresses and consoles us. She reminds us that she is “with” and “for” us like a loving Mother as we wait for the beloved Son.

Thanks to many sick confreres for their example of continuous donation to the mission, and thanks to those confreres of ours who, day and night, live out the words of the Gospel “take care of him.” Thank you. (Álvaro Aguado Razo s.x.)
