Ad Alzano, il 3.9.2013 è morto il P. Antonio Benetti. Colpito da malore ha chiesto aiuto al P: Rettore, ma mentre ci si apprestava a portarlo nel vicino ospedale il confratello ha cessato di vivere. Erano circa le 23.30. P. Antonio aveva 77 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Povolaro di Dueville (Vicenza) il 26.4.1936.
Entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza nel settembre 1948. Qui frequentò le tre Medie. Passò quindi a Zelarino (1951) per il Ginnasio. Alla fine del biennio, con l’approvazione del Rettore e la soddisfazione del suo Parroco, presentò domanda di ammissione al Noviziato: “... il Signore mi ha manifestato che questa è la mia strada. Io ho fiducia in me stesso. Sento che solo all’istituto può essere il mio posto” (6.3.54). “Va aiutato a superare la naturale timidezza .... Ama il lavoro ed è molto attaccato alla vocazione” (Il Rettore). “Finalmente siamo al primo passo ufficiale per Antonio. Per conto mio penso farà bene questo ed altri passi” (Il Parroco).
Il 12.9.1954, a San Pietro in Vincoli, iniziò l’anno canonico di Noviziato che concluse con la Prima Professione il 12 settembre 1955. Nella presentazione del P. Maestro viene segnalata quella che sarà una caratteristica di P. Antonio: “È di poche parole nelle ricreazioni, ma la sua compagnia è amata dai compagni per le sue lepidezze”. Seguendo l’iter formativo Saveriano frequentò il Liceo a Desio (55-58), l’anno di Propedeutica a Piacenza. Fece il Prefettato a Brescia e la Teologia a Parma (60-64)
Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 13.10.1963. Un evento vissuto con timore e serenità: “Tremo e la mia mano è incerta al pensiero di ciò che sto per chiedere. Tremo perché sono cosciente di andare incontro ad una tremenda responsabilità. Però sono anche convinto, e ciò mi tranquillizza, che la Mamma Celeste non mi abbandonerà”.
Nel 1964, terminati gli studi teologici, ricevette la prima destinazione: Economo della Casa di Vicenza con una comunità tra Religiosi e studenti di un centinaio di persone. Senza dubbio chi lo ha mandato doveva avere una certa stima di P. Antonio.
Nel 1970 fu destinato al Brasile Nord. Dopo lo studio della lingua e un anno di pastorale parrocchiale a Moju, fu parroco della parrocchia di S. Francesco Saverio a Barcarena (73-81) e dal 1982 al 1986 guidò la comunità cristiana di Acarà.
“È proprio vero – scriveva il 17.5.74 - che qui mi trovo benissimo, respiro a pieni polmoni e, per dire una parola moderna, mi sento realizzato. Tutto quello che pensavo fosse difficile, mi torna sempre più facile. Chiaro... Difficoltà ce ne sono e non poche, ma sempre superabili con l'aiuto del Buon Dio. A Barcarena la gente risponde per cui tutti i giorni abbiamo il nostro daffare, con le sorelle Adua e Enrica, per preparare riunioni, incontri, visite, ecc.”.
Richiamato in Italia, ricoprì l’incarico di Rettore ed Economo nelle comunità di Brescia (86-92), Zelarino (93-2002) e Pegli (2002-2008) e, dal 2010, Economo ad Alzano. Erano tempi non facili, di cambiamenti che esigevano coraggio di rottamare e fiducia nel futuro. P. Antonio si rivelò un traghettatore nato: obbediente per procedere ai cambiamenti decisi dai Superiori, calmo e positivo per muovere con libertà e serenità verso le nuove modalità della presenza saveriana in Italia.
“P. Antonio - sono testimonianze che vengono dalla comunità e da amici di Zelarino - viso sorridente e persona sempre disponibile”. Impegnato particolarmente nella parrocchia dei santi Gervasio e Protasio di Carpenedo-Venezia.
Diede un valido apporto nel curare per Radio Carpini S. Marco (la trasmittente del Patriarcato di Venezia) le rubriche missionarie: Rassegna della Stampa Missionaria e Interviste ai Missionari di passaggio delle comunità cristiane della Diocesi.
Animatore negli ultimi anni di un gruppo di amici “con una presenza discreta, quasi impercettibile ma punto essenziale e continuo di riferimento. Durante uno degli ultimi pellegrinaggi abbiamo intravisto il segreto della semplicità e profondità della sua predicazione e del suo dialogare: sapeva collegare con Dio tutto ciò che ci accadeva, i luoghi, la natura ed anche le persone che incontravamo di qualsiasi condizione esse fossero”.

Fr. Antonio Benetti died on 3 September 2013, in Alzano Lombardo (Bergamo, Italy). He called the Rector to help him when he suddenly felt unwell, but died as the confreres were arranging his transfer to a nearby hospital. Born in Povolaro di Dueville (Vicenza, Italy), on 26 April 1936, he was 77 years old
He joined the Institute in Vicenza in September 1948, where he attended junior high school. He then moved to senior high school in Zelarino (1951). After the biennium, with the approval of the Rector and his Parish Priest, he applied for admission to the Novitiate: “… the Lord has shown me that this is my path in life. I have confidence in myself. I feel that the Institute is the only place for me” (6.3.54). “He must be helped to overcome his natural shyness …. He loves work and is very attached to his vocation” (the Rector). “At last we have reached the first official step for Antonio. I think he will do well both now and in the future” (the parish priest).
On 12 September 1954, he began Novitiate at San Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 12 September 1955. The Novice Master’s report highlighted a trait of Fr. Antonio that would become characteristic of him: “He is a man of few words during recreation, but his witty company is enjoyed by his companions”.
In compliance with the Xaverian formation program, he attended Lyceum at Desio (1955-58), a Propaedeutic year in Piacenza, he served as Prefect at Brescia and studied Theology in Parma (1960-64). He was ordained priest in Parma on 13 October 1963. He experienced this event with mixture of fear and serenity: “I tremble at the thought of what I am about to ask because I am aware that I am taking on a tremendous responsibility. Nevertheless, I am also convinced that our Heavenly Mother will not abandon me and this reassures me”.
In 1964, upon completion of his theological studies, he was given his first assignment as treasurer of the Vicenza community, in a community of religious and students that numbered almost 100 members. Undoubtedly, those who sent him there held Fr. Antonio in high esteem.
In 1970 he was assigned to North Brazil. After language study and one year in parish pastoral ministry at Moju, he was appointed parish priest of the St. Francis Xavier Parish in Barcarena (1973-81). This was followed by a period in charge of the Christian community of Acarà (1982-86).
On 17 May 1974, he wrote: “I have settled down very well here and I feel truly fulfilled. Everything that I thought would be difficult is becoming easier and easier for me. Obviously... there are more than a few difficulties, but these can always be overcome with the help of the good Lord. At Barcarena we are always busy, preparing visits and meetings, etc., with sisters Adua and Enrica”.
He was called back to Italy, where he served as Rector and treasurer in the communities of Brescia (1986-92), Zelarino (1993-2002), Pegli (2002-2008) and treasurer in Alzano from 2010 until his death. These were demanding times of changes that called for the courage to break with the past and look to the future with confidence. Fr. Antonio was more than equal to this challenge: he readily embraced the changes decided by the Superiors, moving calmly and positively, with a free and serene spirit, towards new forms of Xaverian presence in Italy.
The community of Zelarino and its friends remember him as “a smiling and always available person”. He worked especially in the parish of Sts. Gervasio and Protasio in Carpenedo-Venezia.
He gave a valid contribution to Radio Carpini S. Marco (the radio station of the Patriarch of Venice) by preparing missionary press reviews and interviews with missionaries passing through the diocese.
In his final years he animated a group of friends: “he was a discrete, but reliable point of reference. During one of the last pilgrimages, we caught a glimpse of the secret of his simple and profound preaching and dialogue: he knew how to connect God to everything: the places, nature and the people we met, no matter their situation in life”.
