P. Giorgio Masi

A Parma, il 5.9.2013, verso le 17.45, è morto il P. Giorgio Masi. Era in cura in Casa Madre dall’ottobre del 2009 e aveva quasi 75 anni, essendo nato a Belvedere di Castel del Rio (Bologna - Italia) il 12.10.1938.
P. Giorgio fu allievo del Seminario di Imola dalla Preparatoria alla Propedeutica (48-59). Il suo Rettore presentandolo ai Superiori dell’Istituto scriveva: “Ha dimostrato da diverso tempo di avere la vocazione missionaria e di essersi preparato con costanza di volontà, nonostante le opposizioni incontrate”(11.9.59). Entrò tra i Saveriani a S. Pietro in Vincoli il 1° ottobre 1959. Il 2.10.59 iniziò il Noviziato canonico e il 3.10.1960 fece la Prima Professione. Passò quindi a Parma per gli studi teologici intervallati, dopo il primo anno, dal Prefettato a Brescia.
Il 13.10.1963, a Parma, ricevette l’Ordinazione Presbiterale. Nella proposta per l’ammissione al Presbiterato i formatori evidenziarono gli aspetti positivi della sua personalità: “pietà, docilità, dedizione al lavoro, zelo, spirito di sacrificio, impegno pe la perfezione: tutto sommato, abbiamo un totale che costituisce una buona calamita per la grazia sacramentale dell’Ordinazione” (3.7.63).
Il primo campo di lavoro fu il Messico (64-69). Studiò la lingua a S. Juan del Rio e presto incominciò a predicare e amministrare i sacramenti e per incarico del parroco si prese cura della Legio Mariae: “Maria era ed è stata sempre la fulgida stella della predicazione. Lei ha annunciato e offerto la Parola fatta Carne per salvare l'umanità”.
Poi venne la destinazione all’ICO (Instituto Cultural de Occidente) di Mazatlan: “Il mio sacerdozio venne assorbito per 4 anni dalla scuola con classi numerose e 32 ore settimanali di lezione: religione, biologia, etimologia greco- latina, storia della filosofia. Inoltre confessioni, prime comunioni, raduni scout, conferenze ai genitori, tanti e tanti colloqui individuali e il servizio pastorale a un rancho”.
Ma P. Giorgio desiderava ‘la missione vera’ e lo fece presente ripetutamente ai Superiori: “L’unico motivo per cui chiedo è perché il Signore si è degnato di conservare nel mio cuore il desiderio di fare il prete, e farlo proprio dove più grande è la necessità. Sottolineo ‘fare il prete’ inteso come amministrazione dei Sacramenti, ideale e fine di ogni apostolato sacerdotale” (3.4.67). Fu destinato all’Indonesia: “ Sognavo il Lebbrosario di Bagan Si Api, ma mi toccò Pekambaru nell’isola di Sumatra, impegnato nella scuola, con la Legio Mariae; i Rayon di 20-30 famiglie; i catecumeni, i battesimi degli adulti, le funzioni per le grandi feste i chierichetti, i seminaristi”. Rimase in ‘missione’ tre anni.
Nel 1973 i Superiori gli chiesero di ritornare in Messico per l’animazione missionaria e vocazionale.
P. Giorgio accolse la proposta. “Ripresi il lavoro duro ma soddisfacente delle visite alle scuole per parlare della vocazione missionaria, della bellezza di seguire Gesù. Alla base della proposta sempre il Vangelo, l’Eucarestia, la Vergine Maria e l'unione al S. Padre. Ricordo con gioia i molti rosari recitati attorno al fuoco della sera nelle giornate vocazionali, le lunghe ore di adorazione davanti al Santissimo; gli esempi di Paolo VI e Giovanni Paolo II considerati i grandi missionari dei nostri tempi”.
Nella lunga tappa Messicana (75-94) P. Giorgio lavorò a Salamanca (75-77), Guadalajara (77-84) e - dopo un biennio di studio a Roma all’Università Gregoriana dove conseguì la Licenza in Teologia spirituale con una pregevole tesi sulla spiritualità del Fondatore - a Mazatlán (86-94).
Nel 94 rientrò definitivamente in Italia lavorando nell’animazione missionaria, finché la salute lo sostenne, a Reggio Calabria (94-96) e a S. Pietro in Vincoli (98-09).
“La vita missionaria – è un appunto di P. Giorgio del 1990 - è stare sempre uniti con il Signore Gesù Risorto e con Lui andare dalle pecore che il Padre vuole fare incontrare con Gesù. Se impiegassimo più tempo nello ‘stare’ e nell’ ‘andare’ e meno nel fare e nel dire, si salverebbero più anime. Che la Madonna ci assista e ci protegga, riempiendo sempre le nostre giare di ottimo vino per il banchetto con i fratelli”.
Il Signore che lo ha ‘provato’ duramente negli ultimi anni lo accolga nel suo Regno.

Fr. Giorgio Masi died in Parma on 5 September 2013. He had been in nursing care in the Mother House since October 2009. Born in Belvedere di Castel del Rio (Bologna - Italy), on 12 October 1938, he was almost 75 years old.
Fr. Giorgio was a student of the Seminary of Imola in the period 1948-59. Presenting him to the Superiors of our Institute, his Rector wrote: “For some time now he has shown that he has a missionary vocation, preparing with a steadfast will, in spite of all the opposition he has encountered”(11.9.59).
He joined the Xaverians at S. Pietro in Vincoli on 1 October 1959 and began Novitiate on the following day. He made his First Profession on 3 October 1960 and moved to Parma to study Theology. After the first year in Parma, he went to Brescia to serve as prefect in the junior seminary.
He was ordained priest in Parma on 13 October 1963. In their presentation report, the formators highlighted the positive aspects of his personality: “piety, docility, dedication to work, zeal, spirit of sacrifice, pursuit of perfection: in short, an ideal candidate for ordination” (3.7.63).
His first assignment was to Mexico (1964-69). He studied the language in S. Juan del Rio and soon began to preach and celebrate the sacraments. He was delegated by the parish priest to take charge of the Legion of Mary: “Mary has always been the shining star of preaching. She announced and offered the Word made flesh for the salvation of humanity”.
He was then assigned to the ICO (Instituto Cultural de Occidente) in Mazatlan: “My priesthood was taken up for 4 years by large classes and 32 hours a week teaching religion, biology, Greek-Latin etymology and the history of philosophy. There were also confessions, first communions, scout meetings, conferences with parents, many individual conversations and pastoral ministry”.
But Fr. Giorgio wanted ‘the real mission’ and he made this known repeatedly to the Superiors: “My sole reason for asking is the fact that the Lord has deigned to preserve in my heart the desire to work as a priest in the most needy places. I emphasize ‘to work as a priest’ in the administration of the Sacraments, which is the ideal and the goal of every priestly apostolate” (3.4.67). He was assigned to Indonesia: “ My dream was to work at the Leper clinic in Bagan Si Api, but I was sent to Pekambaru, on the Island of Sumatra, where I worked in the school and with the Legion of Mary; the Rayon made up of 20-30 families; the catechumens, adult baptisms, ceremonies on the occasion of great feasts, the altar servers and the seminarians”. He remained in the ‘mission’ for three years.
In 1973 the Superiors asked him to return to Mexico to work in missionary-vocation animation.
Fr. Giorgio accepted the proposal. “I resumed the hard, but satisfying, work of visiting the schools to speak about the missionary vocation and the beauty of following Jesus. The proposal was always based upon the Gospel, the Eucharist, the Virgin Mary and unity with the Pope. I remember with joy the many rosaries prayed around the fire in the evenings of the vocation days, the long hours of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and the example of Paul VI and John Paul II, who were considered the great missionaries of our times”.
In the long Mexican phase (1975-94) Fr. Giorgio worked in Salamanca (1975-77), Guadalajara (1977-84) and, after two years studying in Rome at the Gregorian University (where he obtained a Masters in spiritual Theology with an excellent thesis on the Founder’s spirituality), in Mazatlán (1986-94).
In 1994 he returned definitively to Italy, where he worked in missionary animation in Reggio Calabria (1994-96) and S. Pietro in Vincoli (1998-2009).
In 1990, he wrote: “The missionary life means always being with the Risen Lord and seeking out the sheep that the Father wishes to bring to Christ. If we spent more time ‘being with’ and ‘seeking out’, and less time in doing and speaking, we would save more souls. May Our Blessed Lady help us and protect us, and fill our jars with excellent wine for the banquet with our brothers and sisters”.
