A Parma in Casa Madre, intorno alle 15.00 del 16.9.2013, si è spento alla veneranda età di 95 anni P. Amato Dagnino. Era in cura dal settembre 2005.
Era nato a Pavarara di S. Secondo Parmense (Parma) l’11 agosto 1918.
Entrò tra i Saveriani il 30.8.1929 a Poggio S. Marcello dove frequentò i tre anni di Ginnasio inferiore. Passò quindi a Grumone per il Ginnasio superiore. Due anni dopo proseguì per il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli e il 15.8.1935 emise la Prima Professione. Dal ’35 al ’38 fu a Parma per il Liceo. Dopo l’anno di Prefettato a Vallo della Lucania ritornò a Parma e compì gli studi teologici in Seminario. Per quegli anni un confratello scrisse di P. Dagnino: “Può dare l’impressione di pochezza, ma non è vero. Ottimo elemento”. E nella presentazione per gli Ordini Maggiori si legge: “Delicatissimo di coscienza, aperto, docile, di pietà soda ... È intelligente e studioso molto”(11.12.42). Fu ordinato Presbitero a Parma il 29.6.1943.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu Prefetto e insegnante a Gromo S. Marino (43-45), insegnante a Pedrengo (46-48), a Zelarino (48-49) e Vicerettore a Vicenza (sett.- ott. 49). Fu quindi P. Spirituale a Desio in Liceo (49-52), poi a Piacenza in Teologia dove insegnò pure Teologia spirituale (52-58). Contemporaneamente ebbe l’incarico di insegnante di Inglese a Cremona (52-56) e, nell’anno scolastico ’57-’58, di Teologia Spirituale alla Ia teologia a Parma. Dal ‘58 al ‘63, Magister spiritus a Parma nello studentato teologico.
Nel 1963 fu destinato al Congo, dove rimase neppure un anno perché i missionari furono fatti rimpatriare a causa della rivolta mulelista. Ritornato a Parma, gli fu chiesto ancora il servizio dell’autorità in Teologia: Magister spiritus (64-67), Rettore e Superiore (67-77 e 81-84). “Sono stati anni difficili, di ricerca e di rinnovamento - gli scriveva il P. Generale il 25 ott. 1977 - ed il fatto che abbiamo potuto offrire nel corso di questi anni un bel numero di giovani Padri alla missione e alla chiesa, è segno della bontà della formazione loro impartita”.
A questo punto non si può non ricordare il compito di Maestro, P. Spirituale e Confessore svolto dal P. Dagnino, fin dagli inizi, nella Società Missionaria di Maria, come è stato ricordato dalla Direttrice Generale alla Messa esequiale: “Padre Amato Dagnino è stato fedelmente il formatore di generazioni di Saveriane e il confessore e direttore spirituale di tante sorelle e infine il cappellano domenicale delle nostre sorelle ammalate; ci ha aiutate a cogliere e accogliere una spiritualità solida, essenziale, non devozionista, fondata sulla Scrittura, sul Magistero e sugli scritti dei santi, capace di alimentare la vita missionaria costituendo un permanente punto di riferimento. Ci ha insegnato la mentalità nuova del Concilio Vaticano II. Quasi quotidiana è stata per anni la sua presenza per le confessioni e la direzione spirituale. Sempre con grande discrezione: non si è mai intromesso nel cammino della nostra Famiglia, non ha mai scavalcato il suo ruolo; dava i consigli richiesti e si tirava in disparte: non una parola in più”.
Nel 1984 concluse il suo ruolo come formatore in Congregazione. Dall’84 all’89 fece parte della comunità di Desio e, dall’89 in poi, di Parma. Per più di vent’anni fu Predicatore di Esercizi (in particolare a seminaristi e a presbiteri), ricercato Direttore Spirituale in casa e fuori, apprezzato autore di testi di Teologia spirituale. A cominciare dalla prima opera, l’unica che ricordiamo e con il titolo della 4a Edizione del 1968, ‘La vita cristiana, o Il mistero pasquale del Cristo mistico: secondo la rivelazione, studiata dalle teologia e insegnata dalla Chiesa’. Un titolo che condensa gli interessi, la ricerca, i valori della vita e dell’attività del P. Amato. Così si è espresso P. Generale nell’omilia della messa esequiale: “P. Dagnino aveva solo l’intento di non lasciare noi, suoi studenti, nell’ignoranza di Dio e della Verità, che ci rende liberi. Ci insegnava come comportarci con Dio, con la Sapienza eterna, che poi saremmo stati mandati ad annunciare in tanti angoli del mondo e dell’umanità. Ci ha insegnato a discernere tra l’eterno e il provvisorio, tra il necessario e il superfluo. È, questo, il cuore dell’insegnamento del nostro Fondatore S. Guido M. Conforti: «Teniamo Cristo innanzi agli occhi della nostra mente ... per modo che le nostre azioni esteriori siano la manifestazione della vita interiore di Cristo in noi» (Lettera Testamento 7).

Fr. Amato Dagnio died on 16 September 2013, in the Mother House, where he had been in nursing care since 2005. Born in Pavarara di S. Secondo Parmense (Parma, Italy), on 11 August 1918, he was 95 years old.
He joined the Xaverians on 30 August 1929 at Poggio S. Marcello, where he attended junior high school. He then moved to Grumone for senior high school. Two years later he was in S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate. After his First Profession on 15 August 1935, he spent three years at the Lyceum in Parma (1935-38), with an interval in Vallo della Lucania as prefect before returning to Parma to study theology at the Seminary. The report presenting him for ordination said: “He has a very fine conscience, he is open, docile, with a solid piety … He is intelligent a studies a great deal”(11.12.42). He was ordained priest in Parma on 29 June 1943.
After his ordination he was prefect and teacher at Gromo S. Marino (1943-45), teacher at Pedrengo (1946-48), Zelarino (1948-49) and Vice-rector in Vicenza (Sep-Oct 1949). He was the Spiritual Director at Desio in the Lyceum (1949-52), then in Piacenza, in the Theology, where he also taught spiritual theology (1952-58). At the same time he taught English in Cremona (1952-56) and, in the academic year 1957-58, spiritual theology to the first year theology students in. He served as Magister spiritus in the theology community of Parma from 1958 until 1963.
In 1963 he was assigned to the Congo, but he was forced to return within a year with the other missionaries because of the Mulele rebellion. On his return to Parma, he was asked to serve once again as Magister spiritus (1964-67), Rector and Superior (1967-77 and 1981-84) in the theology community. On 25 October 1977, the Superior General wrote to him: “These have been years of difficulties, research and renewal, and the fact that we were able to provide the mission and the Church with a good number of young priests is a tribute to the good formation they received”.
At this point we cannot forget the task of Spiritual Director and Confessor that Fr. Dagnino carried out, from the very beginning, in favor of the Missionaries of Mary; at his funeral Mass, their Superior General said: “Fr. Amato Dagnino was the faithful formator of generations of Xaverian sisters, the confessor and spiritual director of many of them and the Sunday chaplain of our sick sisters; he helped us to grasp and embrace a solid and essential spirituality, based on Scripture, the Magisterium and the writings of the saints; he nourished our missionary life and was a permanent reference point for us. He taught us the new mentality of the Second Vatican Council. For many years, he came to us almost every day to hear confessions and offer spiritual direction. He always acted with great discretion: he never interfered in the affairs of our Family, nor did he ever cross the boundaries of his role; he gave any requested advice and then withdrew, with not a word more”.
In 1984 his formation service in the Congregation came to an end. Thereafter, he was a member of the Desio community (1984-1989) and then, from 1989 onwards, of the Parma community. For more than twenty years he preached retreats (especially to seminarians and priests), he was a sought-after Spiritual Director in the community and outside and an esteemed author of spiritual theology works. His very first book, La vita cristiana, o Il mistero pasquale del Cristo mistico: secondo la rivelazione, studiata dalle teologia e insegnata dalla Chiesa’, sums up his interests, research, life values and activity.
During the funeral Mass, the Superior General said: “the sole intention of Fr. Dagnino was not to leave us, his students, ignorant of God and the Truth, which makes us free. He taught us how to behave with God, with the eternal Wisdom, which we were then sent out to proclaim throughout the world and to all peoples. He taught us to discern between what is eternal and temporary, between what is necessary and what is superfluous. This is the heart of the teaching of our Founder, St Guido M. Conforti: «Let us keep Christ in mind … so that our external behavior will become the manifestation of the inner life of Christ within us » (Testament Letter 7).
