Nacque in Avilla di Buia (UD) il 23.IV.1902, decimo di quattordici figli e figlie. Entrato in Seminario a 11 anni, dopo il I° Corso Teologico fu chiamato alle armi: fu militare per un anno.
Sensibile già da tempo al problema missionario, che aveva cercato di propagare tra il Circolo Giovanile di Avilla, a 21 anni entra a Parma nell'Istituto Saveriano dove emette la Professione religiosa l'8.VI.1924 nelle mani del Fondatore e dal medesimo il 29.VI.1927 viene ordinato Sacerdote.
Per cinque anni, come Propagandista delle Opere Pontificie Missionarie, visita parecchie Città d'Italia a bordo di una delle prime FIAT 500 e nelle adunanze missionarie si serve delle pellicole missionarie dell'Istituto "Fiamme" e "Aquilotti". I suoi giri toccano varie Diocesi e regioni d'Italia: Alessandria e Brescia, Albenga, Savona, Genova, Ferrara, Forì, Cesena, Varese, Milano, l'Abruzzo, la Toscana ed il Friuli.
Il 7.VII.1932 all'età di 30 anni, assieme ad altri nove Confratelli, imbarcatisi sulla nave "Conte Rosso", parti per la Cina, ove lavorò nelle località missionarie di Cheng-chow, di Juchow, di Lushan.
Nel dicembre 1936 è nominato Rettore del Seminario di Cheng-chow: attività difficile data la precarietà dell'edificio e dal 1937 in poi data la guerra cino-nipponica. Durante il bombardamento del 12 Maggio 1938 venne ferito in diverse parti del corpo da schegge e calcinacci: per tutti i rimanenti anni di presenza in Cina egli passerà da un Ospedale all'altro, trasportato ora in portantina, ora su un rudimentale carro..., nel tentativo di ricuperare la salute necessaria al lavoro missionario.
Richiamato in Italia, arriva a Roma nell'agosto 1948, dopo aver fatto a tempo a vedere gli inizi dei concentramenti e delle sofferenze varie che il nuovo regime maoista avrebbe riservato ai suoi Confratelli.
In Italia, dopo un periodo di animazione missionaria in diverse Diocesi, fu nominato, nel 1950, Rettore della Casa Madre. Ne chiederà l'esonero per malattie l'anno successivo.
Il rimanente periodo della sua vita è un alternarsi tra lavoro di animazione nell'Istituto e fuori, e frequenti degenze in Casa di Cura. Sono gli anni in cui P. Amadio diventa uno dei primi collaboratori per organizzare e completare il Film "Il Grande Alveare", nel quale ha una parte notevole come protagonista.
Colpito da nuovo e repentino malore morì il 13.X.1953 a Parma.

Fr. Amadio Calligaro died at the Mother House in Parma, following a sudden collapse, on Oct. 13 1952. He was 50 years old, born on April 23 1902 at Avilla di Buia (Udine).
He studied in the diocesan Seminary at Udine, till the beginning of Theology, when he was called for military service. He showed sensitivity to the missionary life since his involvements in his home parish at Avilla with the Youth Group, and he finally entered the Xaverians at Parma at 21 years of age, on June 4 1923. At the end of Novitiate, he professed Religious Mission vows with the Xaverians on June 8 1924 in the hands of the Founder. The founder also ordained him priest on June 23 1927.
His first assignment was Propagandist of the Pontifical Mission Society, visiting many parishes up and down Italy with his Fiat 501 and showing often the Xaverian movies “Fiamme” and the “Il Nido degli Aquilotti.”
At the age of 30, together with other 9 confreres, Fr. Calligaro was assigned to China, and left with the “Conte Rosso” boat on July 7 1932. He worked in the mission posts of Cheng-chow, of Juchow, and of Lushan.
He was then named Rector of the Seminary of Cheng-chow in Dec. 1936, a very difficult task considering the poverty of the building and the beginning of the Chinese-Japanese war in 1937. During the bombing of May 12 1938, he remains injured, victim of shrapnel and fallen material. For the next few years he will be carried from hospital to hospital in poor carriages or stretchers, hoping to get well one day and restart his missionary work.
Fr. Calligaro was called back to Italy, and in August 1948 he is in Rome, after having witness the beginning of the Concentration Camps and the many sufferings that the Maoist regime inflicted on our Xaverian confreres. After an initial period in mission education, he is named Rector of the Mother House in 1950, but, a year later, he asked for a different activity because of poor health.
In fact, in between the many mission education activities, he spent a lot of time in Clinics or Hospitals for rehabilitation. He still had a chance to collaborate and take one of the leading roles for the movie “Il Grande Alveare.” Death found him at Parma, on Oct. 13 1953.
