P. Ugo nacque a Soragna (PR) il 6.IV.1908. Entrato giovanissimo nel Seminario Diocesano, su invito di Mons. Conforti entrò nell'Istituto Saveriano dove emise i primi Voti il 24.VII.1926. Compiuti brillantemente gli studi teologici, durante i quali assistette con cuore straziato alla scomparsa di Mons. Conforti, venne ordinato Sacerdote dal Vescovo Missionario Mons. L. Calza il 20.III.1932 a Parma.
Subito dopo, a 24 anni, fu fatto Direttore e Redattore delle Stampe Saveriane, attività alla quale aveva collaborato già da studente: per otto anni curò le stampe, trovando pure modo di seguire lo studio al quale era portato per inclinazione naturale.
Nel giugno 1937 otteneva la Laurea "Magna cum laude" in Diritto Canonico presso l'Università Gregoriana a Roma.
Scoppiata la seconda guerra mondiale, nel giugno 1940 è richiamato come Cappellano Militare: per tre anni ha modo di fare apostolato tra i soldati in Italia, nella campagna di Albania, in Grecia e in Russia. La campagna di Russia si trasformò nella terribile odissea della ritirata: i 1800 chilometri della tragica ritirata decimeranno il suo gruppo da 600 a 24 uomini, ed egli sarà per loro guida spirituale, morale e militare.
Nel 1947, dopo aver ripreso il vecchio lavoro della Direzione e Redazione delle Stampe, i Superiori gli affidarono il compito di studiare e realizzare una fondazione Saveriana in Spagna. Resosi inutile ogni tentativo, viste le precarietà economiche di tale nazione, concepì l'opportunità di aprire una presenza Saveriana in Messico onde avere fondi per sostenere in seguito le Opere Saveriane in Spagna.
Giunto in Messico nel 1951, in accordo con un gruppo di padri di famiglia della città di Mazatlan fondò una Scuola Cattolica divenuta in seguito lo "Istituto Cultural de Ocidente". Nell'I.C.O. il P. Cattenati avrà modo di esprimere la tenacia, l'originalità, la molteplicità inventiva e creativa della sua personalità. In pratica, l'opera da lui fondata si trasformerà in pochi anni in una vera "Città degli Studi" ottenendo vasta eco nell'opinione pubblica messicana. È altamente espressiva una frase detta in un pubblico dibattito tra gli amministratori delle attività pubbliche e culturali della città: "Non sottovalutiamo le difficoltà, mai. Del resto dopo l'esempio di quel mago che è all'Istituto Cultural de Occidente bisogna cominciare a distinguere tra prete e prete...".
Dopo 13 anni di tale sorprendente attività è costretto dai Superiori a rientrare in Italia per riposo: rientra con le lacrime agli occhi, il suo cuore resta là, nell'I.C.O. che non rivedrà più.
Per due anni lavora di nuovo nel settore delle Stampe dell'Istituto. Nel 1966 riceve un incarico speciale dal Superiore Generale: studiare nella Svizzera di lingua francese la fondazione di una Casa Saveriana, per il perfezionamento della lingua francese dei Saveriani destinati al Centro Africa. Pur avendo 60 anni egli si dedica a tale attività con l'entusiasmo degli anni giovanili: la cura pastorale degli emigrati italiani nella zona di Wettinghen gli merita la stima dei Confratelli Cappellani. Nel pomeriggio del 19.VII.1972 venne colpito da emorragia cerebrale diffusa: trasportato a Parma nella Casa di Cura delle Piccole Figlie, per 5 mesi lottò contro la morte che lo colse "senza far rumore" alle prime ore del 26.I.1973.

Fr. Ugo Cattenati died at the Clinic of the “Piccole Figlie” in Parma on Jan. 26 1973, of cerebral hemorrhage. He was 64 years old, born at Soragna (Parma) on April 6 1908.
He came to the Xaverians at Parma after years of studies at the Diocesan Seminary, following an invitation from the Founder, and professed religious vows on July 24 1926. After a brilliant course of theology studies, and the experience of the death of Bishop Conforti, he was ordained priest by Bishop L. Calza on March 20 1932 at Parma.
At 24 years old, Fr. Ugo is named director and editor of the Xaverian Press at Parma, for about 8 years, while pursuing a course of studies natural to him. In fact, in June 1937 he receives the Doctorate of Canon Law with “highest honors” at the Gregorian University in Rome.
During World War II, Fr. Ugo was called to military service as a Chaplain in June 1940, and ministered to the soldiers in Italy, Albania, Greece and Russia for three years. It was during the retreat from Russia that his spiritual, military, and moral guidance excelled: of the 600 soldiers retrieving from Russia on a 1,200 mile journey, only 24 men survived, and he was one of them.
Back in Italy, the Xaverians superiors asked him to take up again the Direction of the Press in 1947, and asked him to study the possibility to found a Xaverian presence in Spain. After many failed attempts, due to the poor economic situation of Spain, Fr. Ugo saw the possibility to found a Xaverian presence in Mexico, instead, which would sustain the works of the Xaverians in Spain and throughout the world.
He arrived in Mexico in 1951, and together with some families, founded an Apostolic School which would become the “ICO”, the Cultural Institute of the West. Fr. Cattenati’s original idea, his creativity and his tenacious spirit would make it succeed in what has become a true “Study City” in Mazatlan, receiving appreciation from public opinion in Mexico. One of the phrases that stands out during this period came from a open debate of public and cultural administrators of city: “We cannot underestimate the difficulties. Yet, after the example of the magician who created the Istituto Cultural de Occidente, we must distinguish from priest to priest…”
After 13 years of this pioneering activity, Fr. Ugo is recalled back to Italy for some rest: he has tears in his eyes; his heart is close to the ICO, a place he would never visit again.
He worked once again in the Xaverian Press for a couple of years, and then in 1966 Fr. Ugo receives the charge from the Superior General to look for a possible opening in Switzeland for a house of French studies for Xaverians preparing for service in Central Africa. At 60 years old, he commits himself to this activity with youthful enthusiasm, while serving the Italian immigrants in the area of Wettinghen, with much appreciation from his peers. In the afternoon of July 19 1972 he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which caused him to return to Parma, in the clinic of the “Piccole Figlie.” He fought for 5 months this setback, until the day of his “quiet return to the Father” in the morning hours of Jan. 26 1973.
