Era nato l'11.II.1921 da una famiglia di contadini a Cervara di Roma, un paesino aggrappato alla roccia... bello a tal punto da lasciare nell'animo del piccolo Mario un'attrattiva profonda per tutto ciò che è bello e poetico. Frequentato il Seminario Diocesano dei Benedettini a Subiaco fino alla IV Ginnasio, entrò nella Scuola Apostolica Saveriana di Grumone per completare il Ginnasio. Dopo il Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli e la prima Professione il 12.IX.1940, proseguì gli studi liceali e teologici a Parma, alla Casa Madre.
Ordinato Sacerdote il 7.III.1948, si prestò nelle Case di Poggio S. Marcello,Grumone e Nizza Monferrato per il ministero sacerdotale.
Nel frattempo si era impratichito di meccanica e soprattutto aveva curato la fotografia: varie foto da lui scattate restano quasi dei classici in Casa nostra.
Da tempo aveva insistito presso il Superiore Generale per essere inviato in Missione. Lo lusingava la possibilità che i Saveriani avrebbero presto lavorato in India: il suo desiderio quasi si realizzò.
Nel luglio 1952 partiva per il Pakistan Orientale con la prima spedizione saveriana assieme ai Confratelli PP. Battaglierin, A. Tessaro, A. Alberton, V. Dalla Valle. Dopo alcuni mesi di permanenza a Jessore, fu destinato alla Residenza di Satkira. Lavorò molto anche in campo edilizio, costruendo il secondo piano della Casa dei Padri, allargando la Scuola degli Orfani e dei ragazzi della Missione, sistemando la Casa delle Suore. Accolse a Satkira le prime Suore Luigine, che sin da allora lo chiamarono "il loro Padre".
Nel 1962 fu per un periodo di riposo in Europa: ne approfittò per fare pratica di cinematografia con il P. A. Carlesso e per frequentare un Corso di Lingua Inglese in Scozia. Di nuovo, nel 1966, fu in Italia per partecipare al Capitolo Generale come Delegato dei suoi Confratelli.
Tornato in Missione, fu Parroco a Khulna. Cominciò a sentirsi poco bene: nel novembre 1967 ebbe il primo attacco cardiaco. Tuttavia si rimise e quando i Confratelli lo elessero Superiore Religioso di Missione, accettò con generosità, ben conoscendo che forse ciò avrebbe significato rimettere la vita: i Confratelli lo ricompensarono volendo bene al "buon Chiofone".
Il 10.VII.1970 era all'aereoporto di Jessore pronto a ricevere il P. Marini invitato per una visita; all'improvviso lo colse un malore: si appoggiò al cofano della macchina e serenamente si addormentò nel Signore, tra le braccia del P. Francesco esterrefatto.

Fr. Mario Chiofi died at Jessore (Bangladesh) on July 10 1970. As he welcomed Fr. F. Marini, of the General Direction, at the airport of Jessore, he suffered a heart attack in the parking lot, and died suddenly in the arms of Fr. Marini. He was 49 years old, born at Cervara (Rome) on Feb. 11 1921.
He came from a small village outside of Rome, of a farming family. After studies at the diocesan Seminary of the Benedictines at Subiaco, he entered the Xaverians at Grumone, and went to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate, where he professed religious vows on Sept. 12 1940. After theology studies, he was ordained at the Mother House in Parma on March 7 1948.
His first assignments were in Italy, at Poggio S. Marcello, Grumone and Nizza Monferrato. During this time, he could specialized himself in mechanics, and develop his hobby of photos.
On July 1952, he left with the first group of Xaverians assigned to opening a mission in East Pakistan (Msgr. Battaglierin, Frs. Tessaro, Alberton, Dalla Valle, Chiofi). He wrote to the General: “With much joy and personal gratefulness I thank you for the marvelous gift of being sent overseas, numbering me among the departing missionaries of the new mission of Pakistan. I could not receive a more beautiful and felt news during this period of celebrations of the Immaculate Conception. May our Lady bless my enthusiasm and make fruitful my future ministry among the Pakistani.” (Dec. 13, 1951)
After a few months at Jessore, Fr. Chiofi was assigned to Satkhira, helping especially in the construction of the Priest House, the School of Orphans and of the Mission Children, and the Sisters’ House. He welcomed at Satkhira the first “Luigine Sisters” who dearly called him “their Father.”
After a return to Europe in 1962 where he specialized in movie making with Fr. A. Carlesso, and in English in Scotland, he went back to Bangladesh, and worked as parish priest at Khulna, where he suffered his first heart attack in Nov. 1967. He bounced back well, so much that he was elected Provincial Superior of Bangladesh, until the sudden death at Jessore Airport on July 10 1970.
Fr. Mario Veronesi reflects on his life with these words: “We did not find anything spectacular about him, but wherever he went, he left a trace of his way of doing things, and of his character, which can be summarized in these words: 'Do some little good according to the local situation.' In other words: if the 'number and quantity' of good things depend on so many factors, we should try to actualize with our best abilities 'the how’ and ‘the little’ we can.” (1970)
