Il 18 Gennaio 2017, verso le 02.00 AM del Bangladesh nella casa di Dhaka è morto P. Silvano Garello. Alle ore 01.30 aveva chiamato aiuto, perché faceva fatica a respirare e non si sentiva bene. Aveva 78 anni compiuti. Era nato a Valdagno (Vicenza – Italia) il 31 dicembre 1938.
“Cresciuto in una famiglia devotissima di S. Teresa del Bambino Gesù e ispirato vocazionalmente “dal parroco, specialmente dall’altare e dal pulpito (27.12.14), all’età di otto anni aveva deciso di diventare missionario” (Frontiera del Vangelo, Bangladesh, 2016).
Entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza il 20.9.1949. Dopo le Medie inferiori passò a Zelarino per il Ginnasio Superiore (’53-’55). Ammesso al Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli, il 12.9.1956 emise la Prima Professione. Frequentò il Liceo classico a Desio (’56-’59). Dal 1959 al 1961 fu assistente nella comunità di Alzano Lombardo. Studiò Teologia a Parma (’61-’65)e a Parma fu ordinato presbitero il 25 ottobre 1964.
“Statura pusillus, –così nella Presentazione agli Ordini Maggiori, 1964– ma notevolmente dotato di buone qualità. Si impegna a fondo nelle sue cose, usa bene del suo tempo, si cura spiritualmente e intellettualmente”.
E qui è il caso di ricordare anche l’informazione sul rendimento scolastico in Ginnasio: “ottimo profitto in italiano, scarso in matematica” (1.6.55). I primi impegni affidatigli, conclusi gli studi teologici, furono l’insegnamento e l’animazione vocazionale nella comunità di Vicenza (’65-’69). Nel contempo frequentò, a Padova, l’Istituto di Liturgia-di S. Giustina, conseguendo il Diploma di specializzazione in liturgia-pastorale.
Nel 1969 fu destinato al Bangladesh, allora Pakistan Orientale. Trascorse un anno a Londra per lo studio dell’Inglese e nell’ ottobre del 1970 era a Boyra, diocesi di Khulna, alle prese con il Bengalese. Gli inizi dell’avventura in Bangladesh furono particolarmente duri: la guerra di indipendenza (‘70-‘71) e nel1973 problemi di salute che lo costrinsero a rientrare in Europa per curarsi. Rimessosi in salute fu trattenuto in Italia. Dal ’74 al ’76 frequentò la Gregoriana a Roma conseguendo la Licenza in Missiologia. Non volle procedere oltre negli studi accademici. “Ricordo – scriveva il 27.12.2014 – il rammarico di P. Masson che si era lusingato che potessi portare fino alla laurea la mia tesi, per altro suggestiva: Il rapporto maestro/discepolo come metodo di evangelizzazione in Bangladesh. Mi congedai da lui dicendo che mi auguravo di realizzare nella mia vita questa bella laurea”.
Dal 1976 al 1980 risiedette a Parma, addetto alla produzione di audiovisivi e redattore di Fede e Civiltà.
Nel 1980 ritornò definitivamente in Bangladesh. Fu Rettore del Seminario diocesano di Khulna e aiutante nella Parrocchia di S. Giuseppe (’80-’88); incaricato del dialogo interreligioso e delle pubblicazioni in bangladese a Dhaka (’88-’96). Dopo un anno sabatico a Gerusalemme (’96-’97) lavorò a Noluakuri, diocesi di Mymensingh (’97-’01).
Nel 2002 si stabilì a Dhaka “impegnato a tempo pieno per scrivere libri di formazione cristiana e di dialogo interreligioso […]. Cerco di far camminare i miei libri che pur servono a stabilire contatti a sorpresa. Mi entusiasma far conoscere la vicenda di Gesù, il suo messaggio, l’ispirazione che egli ha dato lungo tutta la storia a tante persone di buona volontà che hanno preso il rischio di imitarlo” (27.12.2014).
"A oggi – in AsiaNews (14.4.2014)- ho scritto le biografie di 50 santi e pubblicato più di 200 volumi, tra cui commentari alla Bibbia, libri di liturgia, di preghiera e per la catechesi, rivolti a sacerdoti, religiosi, bambini, studenti e laici".
“Mi sento riconoscente a Dio Padre - conclude il lungo scritto del 27.12.2014 - per avere avuto tante occasioni per festeggiare il dono di suo Figlio Gesù nato da Maria come Salvatore del mondo. Con i cristiani, ma anche con i credenti di altre religioni, ho riflettuto tante volte sulle profezie che lo riguardano, sui personaggi coinvolti nella sua venuta e sul nostro impegno ad accoglierlo. Da questa esperienza ho imparato che il Vangelo resta ancora un libro aperto, la cui scrittura comporta la risposta della propria vita”.

Fr. Silvano Garello died in the Dhaka house, Bangladesh, at 2.00 a.m. on 18 January 2017. Half an hour earlier he had called for help because he was feeling unwell and finding it difficult to breathe. Born in Valdagno (Vicenza, Itlay), on 31 December 1938, he was 78 years old.
“He grew up in a family that was very devoted to St. Teresa of the Child Jesus and his vocation was inspired “by the parish priest, especially from the altar and the pulpit (27.12.14); he decide to become a missionary when he was eight years old” (Frontiera del Vangelo, Bangladesh, 2016).
He joined the Institute in Vicenza on 20 September 1949. After junior high school he moved to Zelarino for senior high school (1953-55). He did his Novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 12 September 1956. He attended the Classical Lyceum in Desio (1956-59) and served as assistant in the Alzano Lombardo community from 1959 until 1961. He studied Theology in Parma (1961-65) and was ordained priest there on 25 October 1964.
The report presenting him to Major Orders in 1964 said: “He is small in stature, but equipped with many fine qualities. He is dedicated in all that he does, uses time well and cultivates his spiritual and intellectual life”. A report on his academic progress in high school also remarked on “his excellent results in Italian, but poor performance in mathematics” (1.6.55).
After his Theology studies, the first tasks assigned to him were teaching and vocation animation in the community of Vicenza (1965-69). In the meantime he attended the Liturgy Institute of S. Giustina in Padova, where he obtained a Diploma of specialization in liturgy-ministry.
In 1969 he was assigned to Bangladesh, which was then known as East Pakistan. He spent one year in London studying English and arrived in Boyra, diocese of Khulna, in October 19670, and began to study Bengali. The initial period of his adventure in Bangladesh was very difficult because of the war of independence (1970-71) and, in 1973, health problems, which forced him to return to Europe for medical treatment. Upon his recovery he was kept in Italy and, from 1974 until 1976, he attended the Gregorian University in Rome, where he obtained a Masters in Missiology. He did not want to continue academic studies: on 27 December 2014, he wrote: “I remember the regret of Fr. Masson who thought that I could obtain a Doctorate with my thesis: The master/disciple relationship as a method of evangelization in Bangladesh. I took my leave of him telling him that I hoped to do this degree at some period in my life”.
From 1976 until 1980 he worked in Parma in the production of audio-visual material and as editor of Fede e Civiltà.
In 1980 he returned definitively to Bangladesh. He served as rector in the Diocesan seminary of Khulna and assistant in the parish of St. Joseph (1980-88); he was in charge of interreligious dialogue and publications in Bengali in Dhaka (1988-96). After a sabbatical year in Jerusalem (1996-97), he worked in Noluakuri, diocese of Mymensingh (1997-2001).
In 2002 he settled down in Dhaka “where he worked full-time in writing books on Christian formation and interreligious dialogue […]. I am keen on making known the life of Jesus, his message and the inspiration that he has given down through the centuries to the many people of good will who have taken the risk to imitate him” (27.12.2014).
In AsiaNews, on 14 April 2014, he wrote: "So far I have written the biographies of 50 saints and published more than 200 books, among them biblical commentaries, books on the liturgy, prayer and catechesis for priests, religious, children, students and lay people ".
On 27 December 2014, he wrote: “I am grateful to God the Father for the many opportunities given to me to celebrate the gift of His Son Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary as the Savior of the world. With Christians, but also with followers of other religions, I have reflected often on the prophecies that concern Christ, on the people involved in his life and on our commitment to receive him. This experience has taught me that the Gospel is still an open book, whose writing is continued through the response of our own life”.

Le 18 janvier 2017, autour de 02h00 du matin au Bangladesh, dans la maison de Dhaka est mort le Père Silvano Garello. Il avait demandé de l’aide à 01h30, car il avait du mal à respirer et ne se sentait pas bien. Il était âgé de 78 ans, né à Valdagno (Vicenza-Italie) le 31 décembre 1938.
« Grandi dans une famille dévote de Ste Thérèse de l’enfant Jésus et inspiré dans sa vocation par le curé, d’une manière spéciale quand il est à l’autel ou sur la chaire (27.12.14), il a décidé à l’âge de 8 ans de devenir missionnaire » (Frontiera del Vangelo, Bangladesh, 2016)
Il entre à la communauté de Vicenza le 20.09.1949. Après le primaire, il passe à Zelarino où il fait le premier cycle sécondaire (53-55). Il est admis au Noviciat à San Pietro in Vincoli, le 12.09.1956 il fait la première profession. Il fait le deuxième cycle secondaire à Desio (56-59). De 1959 à 1961 il fait son stage comme assistant dans la communauté de Alzano Lombardo. De 61 à 65 il fait les études de théologie à Parme et y est ordonné prêtre le 25 octobre 1964.
« De caractère pusillus, - est écrit dans sa présentation aux ordres majeurs, 1964 – mais clairement doté de qualités. Il s’engage à fond dans ses affaires, il gère bien son temps, soigne bien les aspects spirituel et intellectuel ». Rappelons ici son rendement scolaire pendant l’école secondaire : note optimale en italien, insuffisance en mathématiques » (1.6.55).
Ses premières charges après les études de théologies ont été l’enseignement et l’animation vocationnelle dans la communauté de Vicenza (65-69). Il fréquente en même temps à l’Institut Liturgique de Padoue Saint Giustina et obtient le Diplôme de spécialisation en Liturgie pastorale.
En 1969, il est destiné au Bangladesh, encore Pakistan Oriental. Il passe une année à Londres pour l’étude de l’Anglais et en octobre 1970 il arrive à Boyra, Diocèse de Khulna, en proie à la langue Bengali. Le début n’a pas été facile : la guerre de l’indépendance (70-71) et les problèmes de santé en 1973 qui l’oblige à regagner l’Europe pour les soins. Une fois en bonne santé, il est retenu en Italie. De 74 à 76, il fréquente à la Grégorienne de Rome pour l’obtention de la Licence en Missiologie. Il ne veut pas aller au-delà dans les études académiques. « Je me rappelle, écrit-il le 27.12.2014, le regret du P. Masson qui était flatté de pouvoir accompagner ma thèse jusqu’au lauréat, avec titre : Le rapport maître/disciple comme méthode d’évangélisation au Bangladesh. Il m’invitait chez lui et me disait son souhait de me voir réaliser dans ma vie cette beau lauréat ».
De 1976 à 1980 il réside à Parme, attaché à la production des audiovisuels et à la rédaction de Fede e Civiltà.
En 1980, il rentre définitivement au Bangladesh. Il sera recteur du Séminaire Diocésain de Khulna e vicaire à la paroisse St Joseph (80-88) ; chargé du dialogue interreligieux et des publications en Bengali à Dhaka (88-96). Après une année sabbatique à Jérusalem (96-97), il travaille à Noluakuri, diocèse de Mymensingh (97-01).
En 2002 il s’établit à Dhaka « engagé à temps plein pour écrire des livres de formation chrétienne et de dialogue interreligieux (…). Je cherche à mettre en marche mes livres qui peut-être, peuvent servir stabiliser les relations. Je suis enthousiaste à faire connaître la vie de Jésus, son message, l’inspiration qu’il a laissé dans toute l’histoire aux personnes de bonne volonté qui ont pris le risque de l’imiter » (27.12.2014).
« De nos jours – dans AsiaNews (14.4.2014) – j’ai écrit les biographies de 50 saints et publié plus de 200 volumes, parmi lesquelles des commentaires bibliques, livres liturgiques, des prières et des catéchèses, adressés aux prêtres, religieux, enfants, étudiants et laïcs ».
Il conclut son écrit du 27.12.2014 en disant : « Je suis reconnaissant envers Dieu le Père de m’avoir donné tant d’occasion pour fêter le don de son Fils Jésus, né de Marie, comme Sauveur du monde. Avec les chrétiens, mais aussi avec les croyants d’autres religions, j’ai plusieurs fois réfléchi sur les prophéties les concernant, sur les personnes impliquées dans sa venue et sur notre engagement à l’accueillir. De cette expérience j’ai appris que l’Evangile demeure encore un livre ouvert, dont les écrits comportent des réponses pour la vie ».
