Il mattino del 20 gennaio 2017, all’Ospedale di Brescia, dov’era stato ricoverato d’urgenza per ictus cerebrale, è morto P. Giuseppe Tanfoglio.
Aveva 75 anni compiuti. Era nato l’11 ottobre 1941 a Comezzano-Cizzago (Brescia – Italia).
P. Giuseppe fu una vocazione adulta arrivata tra i Saveriani dal mondo universitario. Dopo le tre Medie aveva frequentato l’Istituto Tecnico Commerciale “M. Ballini” di Brescia diplomandosi in Ragioneria. Si era quindi iscritto a Economia e Commercio alla Cattolica di Milano (’60-’62). Nel frattempo faceva l’assistente degli studenti al Collegio Pio XI di Desio. Qui conobbe i Saveriani e decise di diventare missionario. La decisione incontrò l’opposizione della mamma che tribolò non poco per accettare la volontà di Dio.
Entrò all'Istituto a Nizza Monferrato il 26 settembre 1962. Direttamente in Noviziato.
Emise la Prima Professione a Parma il 3 ottobre 1963. Successivamente studiò filosofia a Desio (’63-’64); fece il primo anno di Teologia a Parma (’64-’65), il prefettato a Zelarino (’65-’66) e dal ’66 al ’69 completò gli studi teologici a Parma dove il 13 ottobre 1968 fu ordinato Presbitero.
“È timido e riservato per temperamento: sensibile e delicato – così lo presentò il suo Rettore ai Ministeri ordinati - Mi pare sia stato assiduo agli studi teologici anche nel loro aspetto santificante e formativo. Aiutato da una buona intelligenza si fa convinzioni profonde, aperte ma non pericolose anche se, per non essere state discusse insieme, dato il suo temperamento un po’ chiuso, possono essere meno perfette o complete” (5.6.68).
Dopo l’ordinazione fu impegnato in Italia: redattore di Missionari Saveriani (‘69-’70), Aiuto Economo Generale (’70-’71), addetto all’Amministrazione Provinciale (’72-’74). Dal ‘71 al ’73 frequentò l’Università di Parma e si laureò in Economia e Commercio.
Nel 1974 fu destinato alla Missione del Congo che raggiunse dopo un anno di Francese a Parigi. Fu assegnato al Seminario diocesano di Mungombe. Accettò di buon grado l’insegnamento (’75-’78) e poi il compito di Vicerettore (’78-’81). In una testimonianza pubblicata su Missionari Saveriani (8.4-78) scrisse: “Mi sembrava, e mi sembra tuttora, estremamente importante collaborare alla formazione del clero locale che costituisce la struttura della chiesa”. E aggiungeva: “Gli Africani sono diventati se stessi come popoli e Chiese… deve cambiare anche il ruolo del missionario: da fondatore di chiese deve diventare servitore della chiesa locale, uomo di dialogo, di ascolto e di obbedienza … nella vita politica e economica del paese il cambio di guardia è già stato fatto da tempo! […]. La vita di comunità mi ha dato la possibilità di conoscere più a fondo le idee e le aspirazioni del clero africano. Insegnare in seminario non è solo fare imparare la matematica e il latino, ma è soprattutto vivere insieme, ascoltare, sopportare e collaborare”. Dal 1982 al 1984 fu cappellano a Mwenga.
Nel 1984 rientrò in Italia. Fu formatore a Udine, Economo allo CSAM di Parma (’85-‘92)e poi di Brescia (’92-’95); incaricato, infine, degli abbonamenti alle riviste saveriane.
Nella comunità di Brescia P. Giuseppe ha lavorato per la missione soprattutto studiando e approfondendo il tesoro pittorico di San Cristo, la ‘Cappella Sistina’ di Brescia, con ben due pubblicazioni e accogliendo e guidando molti visitatori, italiani e stranieri. (P. Menin).
“Certo per chi ha conosciuto il Tanfoglio colto e appassionato di San Cristo, è difficile credere che la sua attività istituzionale fosse aggiornare le anagrafiche delle riviste missionarie saveriane” (Savoldi).
Così lo ha salutato il giorno del funerale una collaboratrice dei Saveriani di Brescia: “Lei, P. Giuseppe, era sempre elegante, il padrone di casa, il principe appunto di San Cristo, che accoglieva i visitatori della sua chiesa con semplicità, dolcezza e competenza mai ostentata”.
La missione in Congo gli aveva insegnato “che era arrivato il tempo di ripetere alle comunità evangelizzate le parole di Giovanni Battista al Signore Gesù: ‘Bisogna che egli cresca e io diminuisca”.

Fr. Giuseppe Tanfoglio died of a cerebral hemorrhage, on 20 January 2017, in hospital in Brescia. Born in Comezzano-Cizzago (Brescia – Italy), on 11 October 1941, he was 75 years old.
Fr. Giuseppe was an adult vocation who came to the Xaverians from university. After three years of junior high school, he continued his studies at the Istituto Tecnico Commerciale “M. Ballini” in Brescia, where he obtained a diploma in Bookkeeping. He then enrolled in business Economics at the Università Cattolica in Milan (1960-62). In the meantime, he was assistant to the students of the Collegio Pio XI in Desio, where he got to know the Xaverians and decided to become a missionary. The decision was opposed by his mother, who found it very difficult to accept the will of God.
He joined the Institute in Nizza Monferrato on 26 September 1962 and immediately began his Novitiate.
He made his First Profession in Parma on 3 October 1963. He then studied Philosophy in Desio (1963-64), attended the first year of Theology in Parma (1964-65) and served as Prefect in Zelarino (1965-66); he then completed his Theology studies in Parma (1966-99), where he was ordained priest on 13 October 1968.
His rector thus presented him to the Ordained Ministries (5.6.68) : “He is shy, reserved and sensitive. I believe he has been assiduous in the theological studies, including their sanctifying and formative dimensions. Helped by a good intelligence, he cultivates profound convictions, which are open but not dangerous, even though, since we have not discussed them because of his rather closed temperament, they may be less perfect or incomplete”.
After his ordination he was assigned to Italy, where he worked as editor of Missionari Saveriani (1969-70), Assistant General Treasurer (1970-71) and assistant to the Provincial Administration (1972-74). From 1971 until 1973 he attended the University of Parma where he obtained a degree in business Economics.
In 1974 he was assigned to the Mission of the Congo and he arrived there after a year of French language study in Paris. He was appointed to the diocesan Seminary of Mungombe, where he willingly accepted a teaching post (1975-78) and then the task of vice-rector (1978-81). In an article published in Missionari Saveriani (8.4.78), he wrote: “It seemed to me (and it still seems to me today) extremely important that we collaborate in the formation of the local clergy, who are the backbone of the Church”. And he added: “The Africans have become their own people and Church … the role of the missionary must change too: from the founder of churches, he must become the servant of the local church, a man of dialogue, a man of listening and obedience … the changing of the guard has already taken place some time ago in the political and economic life of the country! […]. Community life has given me the opportunity to obtain a profound knowledge of the ideas and aspirations of the African clergy. Teaching in the seminary is not just a matter of helping students to learn mathematics and Latin but, above all, to live together, to listen, to endure and to collaborate”. From 1982 until 1984 he served as chaplain in Mwenga.
In 1984 he returned to Italy where he served as formator in Udine, Treasurer at the CSAM in Parma (1985-92) and then in Brescia (1992-95); he was then put in charge of the subscriptions to the Xaverian magazines.
In the Brescia community Fr. Giuseppe worked for the mission above all by studying the artistic treasure of San Cristo, the ‘Sistine Chapel’ of Brescia, with two publications and by welcoming and guiding many Italian and foreign visitors on their tour around the church. (P. Menin).
“For those who knew the cultured and enthusiastic Giuseppe Tanfoglio of San Cristo, it was undoubtedly difficult to believe that his institutional activity was to update the register of the Xaverian missionary magazines” (Savoldi).
During his funeral, one of the collaborators of the Xaverians in Brescia said: “Fr. Giuseppe, you were always elegant, the master of the house, the prince of San Cristo, who welcomed visitors to your church with a discrete simplicity, gentleness and competence”.
The mission in Congo had taught him “that the time had come to repeat to the evangelized communities the words of John the Baptist: ‘He must increase and I must decrease”.

Au matin du 20 janvier 2017, à l’hôpital de Brescia, suite d’une “AVC” (accident vasculaire cérébral) mourrait le p. Tanfoglio Giuseppe. Né le 11 octobre 1941 à Comerazzo-Cizzago (Brescia-Italie), il avait 75 ans.
P. Giuseppe fut une vocation adulte venant du monde universitaire. Après le C.O. il avait fréquenté l’Institut Technique Commercial « M. Ballini » de Brescia obtenant ainsi un diplôme en comptabilité. Il s’était inscrit ensuite en section Economie et commerce à l’Université Catholique de Milan (’60-’62). Pendant ce temps il était aussi assistant des étudiants au Collège Pie XI à Desio ; c’est ici qu’il entrera en contact avec le Xavériens et il décidera de devenir missionnaire. A cette décision il trouvera l’opposition de sa maman laquelle peinera beaucoup avant d’accepter la volonté de Dieu pour son fils.
P. Giuseppe il était entré au noviciat xavérien à Nizza Monferrato le 2 septembre 1962 et il y émettra ses premiers voeux le 3 octobre 1963.
Ses études commenceront à Desio (’63-’64), puis à Parme avec la première année de théologie (’64-’65), suivra l’année de stage a Zelarino (’65-’66) ; du 1966 au 1969 sera à Parme pour terminer les études en théologie où il sera ordonné presbytre le 13 octobre la même année.
De la présentation aux ministères ordonnés de son Recteur : « Il a un tempérament timide, sensible et délicat. Il me semble qu’il a été assidu dans l’étude de la théologie, même dans son aspect sanctifiant et formatif. Soutenu par une bonne intelligence il acquiert de convictions profondes, ouvertes mais pas dangereuses même si, n’étant pas fruit d’un discernement commun, vu aussi son caractère un peu fermé, elles peuvent être peu complètes ou parfaites ».
Après l’ordination il sera rédacteur de la revue “Missionari Saveriani” en Italie (’69-’70), puis économe générale adjoint (’70-’71), ensuite attaché à l’administration provinciale (’72-’74). De 1971 à 1973 il fréquente à l’université de Parme où il obtiendra la licence en économie.
En 1974 la congrégation l’affectera à la mission du Congo où il se rendra après une année d’étude de langue française à Paris. Arrivé au Congo les supérieurs lui demandent de prêter son service missionnaire au séminaire diocésain de Mungombe ; il acceptera de bon gré son rôle d’enseignant (’75-’78) puis de vice-recteur (’78-’81).
D’un témoignage publié sur « Missionari Saveriani » nous lisons : « Il me semblait, et cela même aujourd’hui, très important de collaborer à la formations du clergé locale qui constitue la structure de l’église ». Il ajoute : « Les africains sont conscients d’être un peuple et église… donc il s’impose un changement même dans le rôle du missionnaire : désormais le missionnaire fondateur d’églises devient serviteur de l’église locale, homme du dialogue, d’écoute et d’obéissance… ce changement s’est déjà produit dans la vie politique et administrative du pays ! […] La vie en communauté m’a aidé pour connaitre de plus près les idées et les aspirations du clergé africain. Enseigner au séminaire ce n’est pas seulement étudier la mathématique et le latin, c’est surtout vivre ensemble, écouter, supporter et collaborer ».
Dans les années 1982-1984 sera vicaire à la paroisse de Mwenga puis il rentrera en Italie la même année.
En 1984 sera formateur à Udine, puis économe au CSAM à Parme (’85-’92) puis à Brescia (’92-’95) ; chargé des abonnements de revues xavériennes.
La communauté de Brescia sera pour le père Giuseppe une occasion de travail pour la mission et surtout d’étude en approfondissant la connaissance du trésor de la fresque de la chapelle « St Christ » ; nommée la « chapelle Sixtine » de Brescia, il concevra à son sujet deux publications et il guidera à sa connaissance bien de groupes de personne italienne et venant aussi d’autres pays. “Apres avoir connu le p. Tanfoglio, homme cultivé et passionné de « St Christ », c’est difficile de croire que son activité dans la congrégation était de mettre à jour le registre des inscrits de revues des missionnaires xavériens. (Salvoldi)
Les mots de circonstance d’une de collaboratrices de « Missionari Saveriani » di Brescia, lors des funérailles de p. Tanfoglio, nous laissent ce beau portrait de lui : « Père Giuseppe, vous étiez toujours élégant, le patron de la maison, le prince de St. Christ, vous accueilliez les visiteurs de votre église avec simplicité, douceur et grande compétence jamais exhibée ».
La mission au Congo vous avait appris que « le temps était venu de répéter aux communautés déjà évangélisées les paroles que St Jean Baptiste avait dites au Seigneur : « Il faut que Lui grandisse et que moi je diminue ».
Que son âme repose en paix !
