P. Aldo Guarniero

A Parma, alle 02,30 del 17.10-2010, è morto il P. Aldo Guarniero. Aveva 97 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Barbona (Padova) il 25.9.1913.
Vocazione adulta, entrò a Poggio S. Marcello il 12 settembre 1930, frequentò i tre anni del ginnasio inferiore e, dopo un anno di ginnasio superiore a Grumone, fu ammesso al Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli. Il 12 settembre 1935 emise la prima Professione. Passò quindi a Parma per i tre anni di liceo (35-38). Fece l'anno di prefettato a Vicenza. Infine ritornò ancora a Parma per il quadriennio teologico. Fu ordinato presbitero a Conselice (Ravenna) il 20 marzo 1943).
"Carattere piuttosto chiuso. Ma costante e ordinato. Buone doti intellettuali. Nelle pratiche di pietà è preciso. Attaccato alla vocazione e alla Congregazione" (Presentazione alla Professione). Una persona, inoltre, sensibile e di grande umanità. Come traspare anche dall'immaginetta-ricordo della sua ordinazione presbiterale. In essa l'eco dolorosa della seconda guerra mondiale e della morte della mamma: "O Signore che mi chiami a dissodare la Vigna nell'ora della devastazione, e mi doni la gioia più bella nell'ora del pianto, concedi alla mamma la gloria del Cielo, al babbo, ai parenti, ai confratelli e Superiori le tue benedizioni, a me la passione dell'apostolo".
Dopo l'ordinazione fu insegnante a Poggio S. Marcello (43-45) e Massa Lucana (45-46).
Nel 46 fu destinato alla Cina. Arrivò a Pechino per lo studio della lingua nell'aprile del 47. Due anni più tardi raggiunse la missione di I-chum, diocesi di Kian nel Kiang-shi,. Vi rimase fino al 1952: un periodo certamente breve, ma pagato a carissimo prezzo per quanto riguarda il dispendio di energia psico-fisica. Nel marzo 1953, dopo alcuni mesi di soggiorno a Hong-Kong, raggiunse il Pakistan orientale e precisamente, Jessore, la missione da poco affidata ai Saveriani.
Il Pakistan Orientale – Bangladesh dal 1971– fu la seconda patria del P. Aldo, la missione di tutta la sua vita. Fino al 2005, quando per le precarie condizioni di salute fu richiamato in Italia.
Nei circa cinquant'anni vissuti in Bangladesh, si distinguono tre periodi, caratterizzati dal tipo di servizio richiestogli.
Dal 53 al 70 P. Aldo fu il responsabile, Headmaster, della St. Joseph high school. Lusinghiero il bilancio conclusivo degli anni trascorsi nella scuola. P. Aldo consegnava al suo successore una scuola con un numero di studenti triplicato, con strutture più che dignitose, dotata dei necessari strumenti didattici e, per quanto riguarda livello dell'insegnamento e rendimento degli studenti, ai primi posti nelle graduatorie nazionali.
Dal 70 al 73, gli anni dell'indipendenza del paese, fu Superiore Religioso dei Saveriani di quella missione. Al termine del mandato fu richiamato in Italia e fu nominato Rettore della casa di Genova-Pegli. Dopo 18 mesi ottenne di ritornare in Bangladesh.
Qualche anno più tardi scriveva a S. E. Mons. Dante Battaglierin: «Io ho scelto di passare i miei ultimi anni in missione e, finora, mi trovo contento. Non posso illudermi di poter far molto. Qualcosa spero di farlo ancora. Senza cariche e senza titoli, libero da responsabilità, ho più tempo per badare alle piccole cose, per ascoltare…» (23.3.78).
Dal 79 all'82 fu vice superiore religioso; dall' 84 all' 88, direttore spirituale nel seminario maggiore di Dhaka, e dall'88 al 2005 si dedicò ai contatti con gli ex-alunni.
Il 1° agosto 97 scrisse a un Consigliere Generale: «Anch'io da piccolo ho letto "La pratica di amar Gesù Cristo". Ma non l'ho messa in pratica. Ti chiedo: «Conosci un libro che possa insegnare le stesse cose a un uomo di 85 anni, senza fallire due volte? Se lo conosci, puoi anche mandarmelo … con una certa urgenza ».
Il Signore accolga nel Regno questo discepolo che lo ha servito in tanti fratelli del Bangladesh.

Fr. Aldo Guarniero died in Parma on October 17, 2010. Born in Barbona (Padua, Italy) on Sept. 25 1913, he was 97 years old.
Fr. Aldo was an adult vocation and he joined the Xaverians in Poggio S. Marcello on Sept. 12 1930. After four years of study, he was admitted to Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on Sept. 12, 1935. He moved to Parma for three years of lyceum (1935-38), and then served as prefect for one year in Vicenza before returning to Parma for four years of theology studies. He was ordained priest at Conselice (Ravenna) on March 20 1943.
«He is reserved, but reliable and methodical. He is intelligent and diligent in the devotional practices. He is attached to his vocation and the Congregation» (Presentation to Religious Profession). He is also sensitive and very human. The souvenir card for his ordination bears witness to this, with its reference to the painful echoes of World War Two and the death of his mother: “O Lord, you call me to work in your Vineyard in this hour of devastation, and you grant me the most wonderful joy in times of sorrow: grant my mother the glory of Heaven; bless my father, relatives, confreres and Superiors and bestow upon me the zeal of the apostle.”
After his ordination, he taught at Poggio S. Marcello (1943-45) and Massa Lucana (1945-46).
He was assigned to China in 1946 and he arrived in Peking for language studies in April 1947. Two years later he arrived in the mission of I-chum, in the diocese of Kian, Kiang-shi. He remained there until 1952: though his stay was short, he paid a high price in terms of physical and psychological energy. After some months in Hong Kong, he left for East Pakistan in March 1953, where he was sent to Jessore, the mission that had been recently entrusted to the Xaverians.
East Pakistan – which became Bangladesh in 1971 – was Fr. Aldo’s second homeland and he spent the rest of his life there until 2005, when poor health forced him to return to Italy. In the roughly 50 years he lived in Bangladesh, there distinct periods stand out for the kind of services he was asked to carry out.
From 1953 until 1970, Fr. Aldo was the Headmaster of St. Joseph’s High school. At the end of his time there, he handed over to his successor a school that had tripled the number of students, was equipped with good facilities and the necessary didactical resources and, furthermore, its quality of teaching and the performance of its students earned it a high position in the national rankings. From 1970 until 1973, the years of the country’s independence, he served as Religious Superior of the Xaverians. At the end of his mandate he was called back to Italy, where he was appointed Rector of the house of Genoa-Pegli. After 18 months he obtained permission to return to Bangladesh.
A few years later, he wrote to Bishop Dante Battaglierin: «I have chosen to spend my last years in the missions and, so far, I am happy. I am not deceiving myself into thinking that I can do a lot, but I hope I will still be able to do something. Without offices and titles, free of responsibility, I have more time to attend to little things and listen…» (March 23, 1978).
From 1979 until 1982, he was vice-religious superior; from 1984 until 1988, he was the spiritual director in the major seminary of Dhaka, and from 1988 until 2005, he kept contact with former students.
On Aug. 1 1997, he wrote to a General Councilor: «When I was young I read “La pratica di amar Gesù Cristo,” but I did not put it into practice. Do you know of a book that can teach the same things to an 85 year-old man, without failing twice? If you do, please send it to me… with a certain urgency!»
