Intorno alle 10.00 del mattino del 21.1.2013, a Parma è morto Fr. Mariano Masolo. Era stato portato in Casa Madre da Vicenza il 27 dicembre u.s. Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Vicenza il 29 giugno 1930.

Mariano entrò tra i Saveriani all’Istituto di Vicenza nel 1942. Inizialmente la scelta fu contrastata dai genitori. Ne accenna la mamma, Odila, in una lettera (19 maggio 1946): «Conoscendo il carattere del figlio, noi stentavamo ad acconsentire quando tanto insistette per entrare in istituto. Ci persuase il P. Chiarel assicurandoci che Mariano ha tanta buona volontà». La mamma si rivolge in questi termini al Rettore di Grumone perché avverte che il figlio, alla vigilia del noviziato, sta vivendo un impegnativo momento di discernimento vocazionale: «Ora, padre, noi non sappiamo cosa pensare e la preghiamo di volerci informare se non sia successo qualche fatto nuovo per poterci regolare. Noi non intendiamo con questo forzare la volontà dei superiori e tanto meno quella del figliolo, ma cerchiamo solo il suo bene e preghiamo perciò il Signore che lo aiuti e gli dia le doti necessarie per proseguire nella sua vocazione e a lei il lume per conoscere la volontà di Dio». Il discernimento lo portò alla decisione di essere Fratello. Quindi alla fine dell’anno scolastico Mariano si trasferì da Grumone a Cremona dove, dal 46 al 48, frequentò una scuola tecnica per tipografi.
Nel 1948 fece a S. Pietro in Vincoli l’anno di Noviziato, concluso il 12 settembre 1949 con la Prima Professione. Fu assegnato alla Casa Madre e impegnato come tipografo (49-56) e dal 56 al 58 come Capo Ufficio spedizioni.
Nel frattempo proseguiva l’iter formativo dei Fratelli. E nel 1958 chiese di emettere la Professione Perpetua. Nella domanda esprimeva anche la gioia «per la grazia grande che mi ha fatto il Signore chiamandomi in questa congregazione», e rinnovava la richiesta a non dimenticare «il mio desiderio sempre più vivo di andare in missione quando sarà il momento giudicato più opportuno». I formatori segnalarono di Mariano: «Vita religiosa regolare; una certa cura della vita spirituale; desiderio di istruzione». Il 12 settembre 1958 emise la Professione Perpetua a Parma. Trascorse quindi un anno ad Alzano Lombardo, come aiuto economo.
Nel 1959 partì per il Congo, missione allora agli inizi. Servì i confratelli e le comunità cristiane come Procuratore di missione e catechista a Uvira (59-62); Economo locale a Kalambo (62-64).
E a Kalambo agli inizi del 64 giunse in visita a Mariano sua mamma. Un evento degno di nota per quei tempi, come ha ricordato bene P. Giavarini: «La signora Odila capitò in Congo improvvisamente, con tanto coraggio e disinvoltura: una cosa inaudita. Si diede subito da fare per tutti noi: visitare le cucine delle varie nostre residenze per assicurarne l’igiene, insegnare ai cuochi a fare una buona pastasciutta, rammendare i vestiti e tutto quello che può fare una mamma in casa dei figli. Quando rientrò in Italia andò a trovare tutte le nostre mamme per rassicurarle sulla nostra salute». Ma alcuni mesi dopo, a causa dell’incerta situazione politica, insieme a vari altri confratelli fu rimpatriato: «sentivo uno stringimento a lasciare tanta gente e opere che ci erano costate care e che avevamo difeso con i denti negli ultimi mesi» (18.11.64).
Mariano ritornò in Congo nel 1966, dopo aver trascorso un anno a Genova-Pegli e un altro alla Domus di Makeni. In Congo lavorò a Baraka (66-70; 72-80), Mungombe (70-71), Uvira (81-82) Kavimvira (82-83); come Economo e Incaricato delle costruzioni; Incaricato dell’Officina. Nel triennio 74-77 fu Consigliere regionale.
Nel 1983, dopo una permanenza di dieci mesi in Burundi, fu destinato a Parma, Procuratore delle Missioni. Nel 1995 fu assegnato all’ Italia e destinato alla comunità di Vicenza, impegnato nell’economia e nell’animazione missionaria.
«Anche nell’ ultima stagione della vita di Mariano «ne ho ammirato – testimonia P. G. Ferrari - la laboriosità e la disponibilità . Le richieste venivano da ogni parte e Mariano con sollecitudine e insieme con calma tranquilla, rispondeva a tutti. Sapendo che soffriva di cuore noi gli raccomandavamo prudenza e … prudenza. Egli ci lasciava dire, ci tranquillizzava, ma continuava a lavorare come aveva fatto fino allora. Non voleva causare problemi. Ogni tanto veniva alla carica per vedere se poteva ritornare in Congo. Non era però il tipo insistente e indiscreto. Alla fine accettava l’obbedienza in pace, almeno esternamente, e riprendeva il suo posto. È anche la testimonianza di P. Giavarini: «Mariano era molto umile e obbediente ai superiori. …Era un uomo di preghiera, di uno spessore di interiorità che spesso non appariva a chi non lo conosceva profondamente o almeno non lo lasciava trasparire».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo paradiso.

Br. Mariano Masolo died in Parma on 21 January 2013. He had moved from Vicenza to the Mother House on 27 December 2012. Born in Vicenza on 29 June 1930, he was 82 years old.
Mariano joined the Xaverians at Vicenza in 1942. Initially, his decision was opposed by his parents. His mother, Odila, mentioned this in a letter on 19 May 1946: «Knowing our son’s character, we found it hard to consent when he insisted that he wanted to join the Institute. We were persuaded by Fr. Chiarel, who assured us that Mariano has the right intention ». Before the Novitiate, and sensing that her son was going through an intense experience of vocational discernment, she addressed thus the Rector of Grumone: « Father, we do not know what to think and we beseech you to inform us if something new has happened so we know what to do. We do not intend to force the hand of the superiors, and even less our son; we are only seeking what is best for him; we ask the Lord to help him and give him the necessary qualities for his vocation and to enlighten you about His will ». The discernment led Mariano to decide to become a Brother. Therefore, at the end of the academic year, he moved from Grumone to Cremona, where he attended a school to learn the art of printing.
In 1948 he began Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 12 September 1949. He was assigned to the Mother House, where he worked as a printer (1949-56); in the period 1956-58, he was in charge of the shipping office.
In the meantime, he continued the formation program of the Brothers. In 1958 he applied for Final Profession, expressing his joy «for the great grace the Lord has bestowed upon me by calling me to this Congregation ». He also renewed «my great desire to go to the missions when it the time is judged to be right ». The formators emphasized the fact that Mariano: «is constant in his religious life; he takes good care of his spiritual life and is eager to learn ». He made his Final Profession in Parma on 12 September 1958 and then spent one year at Alzano Lombardo as assistant treasurer.
In 1959, he left for the recently founded mission of the Congo. He served the confreres and the Christian communities as mission Procurator and catechist at Uvira (1959-62) and local treasurer at Kalambo (1962-64).
In early 1964, his mother arrived suddenly in Kalambo. It was a noteworthy event at the time, as Fr. Giavarini remembers: «Mrs. Odila arrived suddenly in the Congo, with great courage and self-assurance: it was unprecedented. She immediately set about working for us: she visited the kitchens of our various residences to make sure they were hygienic, she taught the cooks how to prepare a good pasta dish, she mended clothes and everything else that a mother does the house of her children. When she returned to Italy, she went to visit all our mothers to assure them that we were well ». Yet some months later, the uncertain political situation forced Mariano and various other confreres to return to Italy: «it broke my heart to leave the people and the work that we had carried out with great efforts, and which we strenuously defended in recent months » (18.11.64).
Mariano returned to the Congo in 1966 after spending a year at Genova-Pegli and another at the Domus of Makeni. In the Congo, he worked at Baraka (1966-70; 1972-80), Mungombe (1970-71), Uvira (1981-82) Kavimvira (1982- 83); as Treasurer and Director of the construction works; as Director of the workshop. In period 1974-77 he was a Regional Councilor.
In 1983, after a ten-month stay in Burundi, he was assigned to Parma as Mission Procurator. In 1995 he was assigned to the Region of Italy and sent to the community of Vicenza, where he worked in finances and missionary animation.
Fr. G. Ferrari comments: «Even in the last period of his life, I admired Mariano’s industriousness and availability. Requests arrived from everywhere and Mariano replied to all of them with zeal and great calm. Aware that he had heart problems, we advised him to be prudent. He let us speak, he reassured us, but he continued to work as he had always done. He did not want to cause any problems. Every so often, he asked if he could return to the Congo, but he was not the insistent and intruding type. He accepted obedience peacefully, at least externally, and returned to his tasks. In the words of Fr. Giavarini: «Mariano was very humble and obedient towards the superiors. …He was a man of prayer and a spiritual depth that was often not apparent to those who did not know him well; at any rate, he did not let it show ».
