P. Giulio Mattiello

La domenica 2 ottobre 2005, verso le 7.20, nella casa di Vicenza è morto P. Giulio Mattiello: mentre si apprestava a concelebrare la Messa delle 7.30 nella cappella di P. Uccelli, è stato colto da improvviso malore e nel breve giro di pochi minuti è spirato. Apparteneva a quella comunità dal novembre 2001. Aveva 79 anni compiuti, essendo nato ad Altavilla Vicentina (VI) il 17.8.1926.
P. Giulio entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1940, all’Istituto di Vicenza dove frequentò il ginnasio inferiore. Nel 1943 raggiunse Grumone per il ginnasio superiore. Nel settembre del 1945 passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato, concluso con la Prima Professione (24.9.1946). Seguirono il Liceo a Parma e Desio (46-49), il prefettato ad Ancona (49-50), la Teologia a Piacenza. (50-54), l’Ordinazione presbiterale il 3.4.1954. Di quegli anni di formazione P. Dri ricorda che il P. Giulio era “il migliore organista della classe” (23.10.05); nella presentazione alla Professione Perpetua si rilevava che era un “soggetto buono con belle speranze. Lo scorso anno (47-48) fece da prefetto. Gli volevano bene. È amante della disciplina: buono e generoso… Un po’ nervoso e distratto”.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu impegnato nella Casa di Cremona dove fu apprezzato insegnante e Vicerettore. Nel 1960 ricevette la destinazione per la Sierra Leone che raggiunse nel dicembre del 1961, dopo un anno di studio dell’inglese a Glasgow. Purtroppo la sua permanenza nella missione durò appena 14 mesi: fu costretto a rientrare in Italia a causa di seri problemi respiratori e cardiaci.
Nel 1963 fu destinato alla comunità di Alzano. Qui ricoprì la carica di Rettore dal 1964 al 1970: “anni difficili, intensi per il lavoro educativo che seguì il rinnovamento della Chiesa. Anni belli, volati tra l’allegria serena dei ragazzi, le sane famiglie e le vive comunità parrocchiali della terra bergamasca” (Missionari Saveriani, dicembre 1970). Dal 1970 al 1972 svolse lo stesso compito nella comunità di Brescia. Dal 1972 al 1979 fece parte della comunità di Cremona, come insegnante. Al riguardo il P. Giulio, convinto – come gli scrisse il P. Generale l’11.8.78 – “che anche insegnare agli allievi è opera missionaria, anzi lo è in maniera più meritoria perché manca della soddisfazione personale di vedersi e sentirsi in missione”, si impegnò per assicurarsi una conveniente preparazione accademica, conseguendo nel 1974 la Licenza in S. Teologia presso la Facoltà Teologica di S. Tommaso di Bologna, e nel 1981, presso l’Università di Pavia, la laurea in filosofia con la tesi: «Gli inizi della Missione Saveriana nel Honan (1899-1912) – Metodologia dei Saveriani». Uno studio, questo, che di fatto è la prima ricerca scientifica sugli inizi della missione saveriana in Cina.
Nel 1979 passò alla casa di Piacenza, ormai in via di chiusura. Fu incaricato della Chiesa di S. Chiara, Superiore della piccola comunità saveriana, impegnato nel Ministero. Uno spaccato dei 22 anni piacentini del P. Giulio (79-01), nella testimonianza di due suoi amici Leonye e Bruno Cassinelli (2.10.05): “Ci ha aiutato a riscoprire, assieme a tanti amici, il piacere della preghiera e dell’ascolto della Parola di Dio… Amante della musica classica, organizzava spesso concerti a favore delle missioni saveriane… Nutriva stima e affetto per i movimenti ecclesiali e offriva volentieri accoglienza e ospitalità ai gruppi… Al primo impatto, il suo aspetto quasi burbero incuteva soggezione; ma se avevi la fortuna di conoscerlo più a fondo, ti rendevi conto di quanto grande fosse il suo cuore. Non negava il suo aiuto a nessuno”. A questo riguardo, nella sua corrispondenza con confratelli delle varie missioni, non si contano i ringraziamenti per i generosi aiuti pervenuti dai suoi amici.
Così aveva promesso nella domanda di ammissione al Diaconato (25.11.53): “Con umiltà e coraggio, confidando nell’aiuto di Dio e nella protezione di Maria SS. sono deciso a camminare nel miglior modo possibile nella via dell’apostolato Missionario”.

Fr. Giulio Mattiello died at 7:20 on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, in the Vicenza house. He had been getting ready to concelebrate Mass at 7:30 in the “Fr. Uccelli chapel” when he suddenly collapsed and died in the space of just a few minutes. He had been a member of the Vicenza community since November 2001. Born in Altavilla Vicentina (Vicenza) on Aug. 17 1926, he was 79 years old.
Fr. Giulio joined the Xaverians in Vicenza in 1940 where he attended junior high school. He moved to Grumone for senior high school in 1943. He began Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli in Sept. 1945 and made his First profession there on Sept. 24 1946. He then attended Liceo at Parma and Desio (1946-49), spent one year as prefect at Ancona (1949-50) and studied Theology in Piacenza (1950-54). He was ordained priest on Apr. 3 1954. Remembering those formation years, Fr. Dri declares that Fr. Giulio was “the best organist in the class” (Oct. 23 2005); his presentation to Final Profession stated that he was a “good and promising man. He was prefect last year (1947-48) and everyone was fond of him. He loves discipline and is good and generous… He is also somewhat nervous and absent-minded.”
After his ordination he was sent to the Cremona community where he was a highly regarded teacher and vice-rector. In 1960 he was assigned to Sierra Leone and he arrived there in December 1961 after a year of English language study in Glasgow. Unfortunately, his stay in the mission lasted a mere 14 months: serious respiratory and heart problems forced him to return to Italy.
In 1963 he was assigned to the Alzano community where he worked as Rector in the period 1964-70: “they were difficult and intense years for formation work following the renewal of the Church. They were also good years that flew past amidst the serene cheerfulness of the students, the good families and the lively parish communities of the Bergamo area” (Missionari Saveriani, Dec. 1970). He was rector of the Brescia community for two years (1970-72) and then moved to Cremona (1972-79) where he worked as a teacher. In connection with this, Fr. Giulio wrote to the Superior General (Aug. 11 1978) expressing his conviction that “teaching students is also a missionary task; indeed, it is an even more deserving missionary task because it does not give one the personal satisfaction that comes from actually being in the missions.” Consequently, he strove to achieve an appropriate academic preparation for himself: in 1974 he obtained a diploma in Theology at the Faculty of S. Tommaso, Bologna. He then obtained a degree in Philosophy in 1981, at the University of Pavia, with the thesis “Gli inizi della Missione Saveriana nel Honan (1899-1912) – Metodologia dei Saveriani” (The beginnings of the Xaverian Mission in Honan [1899-1912] – the Xaverian’s Methodology). This thesis was the first scientific research into the beginnings of the Xaverian mission in China.
In 1979 he was sent to the Piacenza community, which was then in the process of closing. He was put in charge of the church of S. Chiara, appointed Superior of the small Xaverian community and assigned to pastoral ministry. A cross-section of Fr. Giulio’s 22 years in Piacenza is provided by the memories of two of his friends, Leonye and Bruno Cassinelli (Oct. 2 2005): “He helped us, and many friends, to rediscover the joy of prayer and listening to the Word of God… A lover of classical music, he often organized concerts for the Xaverian missions… He had a high regard and affection for ecclesial movements and willingly offered hospitality to them… When meeting him for the first time, people felt uneasy at his almost gruff appearance; but if you had the good luck to know him better, you became aware of just how big a heart he had. He never denied his help to anyone.” His correspondence with the confreres of the various missions reflects this: the letters contain countless words of gratitude for the generous help received through his friends.
In his application for admission to the Diaconate (Nov. 25 1953), he declared: “With humility and courage, and trusting in God and the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I promise to dedicate myself as much as possible to the Missionary apostolate.” May he rest in peace.
