P. Giuseppino Mattu

L’11 ottobre 2005, alle ore 09.25, a Parma in Casa Madre, è morto il P. Peppino Mattu. Rientrato in Italia dal Camerun in giugno per persistenti e acuti dolori alla mandibola sinistra, gli era stato diagnosticato un carcinoma ed era stato tempestivamente sottoposto a intervento chirurgico per l’asportazione del tumore. Purtroppo senza i risultati sperati.
Aveva 58 anni compiuti essendo nato a Fordongianus (CA) il 13.2.1947.
P. Peppino è entrato tra i Saveriani a Macomer il 4 ottobre 1958. Ha quindi percorso, fino alla terza Teologia, il curricolo scolastico e formativo allora vigente: le Medie appunto a Macomer (58-61), il Ginnasio a Zelarino (61-63), il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli con la Prima Professione il 3.12.64; quindi il Liceo classico a Tavernerio (64-67), la Propedeutica a Parma (67-68) e, dopo due anni di Prefettato a Udine, tre anni di Teologia a Parma (70-73). Dal 73 al 77, accantonata l’idea del sacerdozio e deciso a servire la Missione in una attività sociale, fu studente dell’Istituto Tecnico Agrario “A. Zanelli” di Reggio Emilia. Seguirono lo studio del francese e il servizio missionario in Burundi, conclusosi dopo tre anni con l’espulsione. Ritornato a Parma, maturò la decisione di accedere al presbiterato, che ricevette, dopo gli ultimi due anni di Teologia, il 25.9.1983.
Questa la testimonianza (3.6.1983) di P. Peppino riguardo a questi anni di prolungato e sofferto discernimento: “[Fin dal primo impatto con la vita in Istituto] manifestai una accentuata lentezza nel pensare e nell’agire… mi pareva di non essere stimato, considerato, ben voluto … L’ideale missionario era sempre presente, poco definito su ciò che avrei fatto, ma ben definito sul fatto della partenza dall’Italia… L’immagine che mi feci di me stesso [dopo il prefettato e le prime esperienze pastorali] era all’opposto dell’immagine che avevo del sacerdote-missionario: organizzatore e spigliato oratore. È così che un po’ alla volta mi allontanai dall’idea di diventarlo… [Alla fine, dopo l’esperienza di missione e i ripetuti incoraggiamenti] mi resi conto di trovarmi solo con la mia fede, solo con Dio, solo di fronte alle parole di Cristo, solo di fronte a Lui. Mi son sentito di dire: «sia fatta la Tua volontà»”.
Dopo l’ordinazione i Superiori destinarono il P. Peppino alla Regione d’Italia: sapevano certo della sua timidezza-incertezza temperamentale ma anche conoscevano il suo spirito di sacrificio umile e semplice, il suo impegno e le capacità di dialogo e di collaborazione. Lavorò a Macomer dal 1983 al 1991 come animatore interno e successivamente come economo.
Nel 1991 fu destinato al Camerun che raggiunse nel 1992, dopo un ripasso del suo francese a Parigi. Fu mandato a Douala-Ndong Passi (una ‘parrocchia’ di oltre 100.000 anime) dove fu Superiore della comunità saveriana e impegnato nella pastorale parrocchiale (92-01). Nel 2001 passò a Douala Oyak, come Rettore della PAF (Première Année de Formation): “II nostro lavoro missionario – scriveva il 2.3.05 al Centro Missionario di Oristano– oltre al ministero che ci viene richiesto nelle missioni e parrocchie di Douala con i catecumeni, con i catechisti, con i vari gruppi di spiritualità e di azione sociale, consiste nell’animazione missionaria e vocazionale dei gruppi giovanili a livello delle parrocchie e in collaborazione con la commissione diocesana per le vocazioni e nell’azione formativa a livello saveriano”.
Così lo ha ritratto il suo attuale Regionale del Camerun/Ciad nel messaggio inviato per la messa esequiale: “P. Peppino non era di quelli che “si fanno sentire”, lui amava e quasi ricercava un modo nascosto di operare, pervaso dalla certezza che le cose semplici, quasi – direi – piccole, sono quelle che veramente contano, sia in pastorale che in formazione... Anche il suo agire, tipico dei ‘miti’, non era irruente, mai ‘combattivo’, sempre conciliante e positivo. Un uomo di pace, in qualsiasi incarico ed in qualsiasi comunità saveriana. Ed anche un uomo obbediente”.

Fr. Peppino Mattu died at 9:25 on the morning of Oct. 11 2005, in the Mother House, Parma. Following his retun to Italy from Cameroon in June, a tumor was discovered in his left jaw. Immediate surgery for the removal of the tumor failed to give the hoped-for results.
Born in Fordongianus (Cagliari) on Feb. 13 1947, he was 58 years old.
Fr. Peppino joined the Xaverians in Macomer on Oct. 4 1958. He then followed the academic and formation curriculum until the third year of theology: Secondary School at Macomer (1958-61), High School at Zelarino (1961-63), Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he made his First Profession on Dec. 3 1964; he then attended the Liceo classico at Tavernerio (1964-67), the Propedeutica at Parma (1967-68) and, after two years as Prefect at Udine, three years of theology at Parma (1970-73). In the period 1973-77, after shelving the idea of becoming a priest, he decided to serve the mission in a social activity and he studied at the Istituto Tecnico Agrario “A. Zanelli” in Reggio Emilia. This was followed by French language study and missionary service in Burundi, which ended three years later with his expulsion from the country. Upon his return to Parma, he decided to study for the priesthood and was ordained, after the last two years of Theology, on Sept. 25 1983.
Fr. Peppino thus recalled (June 3 1983) those years of prolonged and painful discernment: “Right from my first contact with life in the Congregation I was very slow in my thinking and acting… I had the impression that I was not appreciated, considered, loved… The missionary ideal was always present in my mind, though I did not have a clear idea of what I would do; yet I was quite clear in my resolve to leave Italy… The idea that I conjured up of myself [after serving as prefect and my first pastoral experiences] was the opposite of the idea I had of the priest-missionary as an organized and self-possessed speaker. Consequently, I slowly but surely gave up the idea of becoming a priest… Finally, after my mission experience and the repeated encouragement of others I realized that I stood before God alone with my faith, alone before the words of Christ, alone before Him. I felt myself able to say ‘may your will be done’.”
The Superiors assigned Fr. Peppino to the Italian Region after his ordination: they were certainly aware of his timidity-uncertainty but they also knew of his humble and simple spirit of sacrifice, his commitment and his capacity for dialogue and cooperation. He worked at Macomer from 1983 until 1991 as internal animator and subsequently as treasurer.
In 1991 he was assigned to Cameroon and he arrived there in 1992, after brushing up on his French in Paris. He was sent to Douala-Ndong Passi (a parish of more than 100,000 people) where he was Superior of the community and engaged in parish pastoral ministry (1992-2001). In 2001 he moved to Douala Oyak, where he was rector of the PAF (Premičre Annče de Formation). On March 2 2005 he wrote to the “Centro Missionario di Oristano”: “In addition to the ministry in the missions and parishes of Douala with catechumens, catechists, various spirituality groups and social action groups, our missionary work consists in the missionary-vocation animation of the youth groups at parish level, cooperation with the diocesan vocations commission and formation activity at Xavierian level.”
The current Regional Superior of Cameroon-Chad thus remembered him in a message that was read at his funeral Mass: “Fr. Peppino was not one of those who ‘made himself heard;’ he loved and sought to work behind the scenes, fully convinced that the small things are the ones that truly count, both in the pastoral ministry and formation… In his activity he was a typically ‘meek’ man; he was not impetuous, never ‘pugnacious,’ he was always conciliatory and positive. In any assignment and in any Xaverian community, he was a man of peace. He was also an obedient man.” (Fr. Girola) May he rest in peace.
