Intorno alle ore 8,00 del 15 aprile 2004, a Tavira (località a 10 Km da Chibututuine), in un incidente stradale, è morto il P. Giuseppe Mauri. Il confratello stava viaggiando verso Maputo quando un pulman, proveniente dalla direzione opposta, ha invaso la sua corsia e si è scontrato violentemente con l’auto del padre causandone la morte immediata.
Era prossimo ai 52 anni, essendo nato a Ronco Briantino (MI) il 14.10.1952.
P. Giuseppe decise di diventare saveriano dopo avere ascoltato, all’oratorio di Paina, il P. Bruno Marchetti. Iniziò il suo iter formativo ad Alzano nel 1963, poi fu a Desio, a Cremona, a Nizza Monferrato (dove fece il Noviziato e la prima professione: 12.9.1971), a Parma (I e II Corso di Teologia) e a Salerno come prefetto. Dal ‘76 all’80 fece parte della comunità di Londra- Finchley dove completò gli studi teologici presso i missionari di Mill Hill. Un’esperienza, questa, quanto mai significativa nel suo iter formativo: « Ho trovato molto utile il vivere in una comunità plurinazionale, mi ha aiutato ad essere libero da una certa mentalità italiana, a privilegiare le relazioni rispetto al lavoro, a smussare il mio carattere, ad assimilare elementi di altre mentalità, a liberare la Parola di Dio dalla mia lettura italiana»(30.10.82). Fu ordinato presbitero il 21.9.1980 a Parma.
Subito dopo l’ordinazione fu destinato alla missione del Congo-Zaire. Convinto che «il primo passo verso l’assimilazione di una nuova cultura è imparare bene la lingua»(30.10.82), studiò con impegno il francese e poi, una volta in Africa (settembre 1981) il Swahili. Lavorò a Shabunda e dal 1983 al 1989 a Bunyakiri, una comunità dove i saveriani lavoravano in stretta collaborazione con missionari laici e che, per questo, meglio incarnava la sua idea di missione: «… condividere le condizioni di vita della gente intorno a noi … [onorare] il compito di dare corpo alla Parola di Dio che opera ogni giorno per l’avvento della terra nuova e dei cieli nuovi» (30.10.82).
Dal 1989-1993 fece parte della Regione della Gran Bretagna. Fu eletto Regionale: un incarico che gli riuscì particolarmente gravoso perché gli rese difficile vivere «i tre valori che mi hanno sempre sostenuto e dato vita… l’assiduità alla parola di Dio, una vita di Comunità intensa, il condividere la vita della gente» (28.7.93). Nel 1993 fu destinato alla Delegazione Centrale per essere rettore della Casa di Londra-Fincley. Svolse il suo compito, come gli attestò il Delegato del tempo, «con tanta dedizione, bontà, pazienza e competenza, come fratello in mezzo ai fratelli»(20.11.97).
Alla fine del 1997 accolse volentieri la destinazione alla prima missione saveriana in Mozambico. Il suo progetto era, più chiaramente ancora, quello di fare missione in una comunità con laici perché «pur non negando il valore profetico della comunità religiosa mi sembra che la comunità con dei laici offra una maggiore ricchezza ministeriale e vocazionale» (9.2.97).
Raggiunse il Mozambico nella seconda metà del ‘98. Lavorò a Chibututuine, nella Fraternità ecclesiale missionaria affidata al Centro Missionari Laici di Piombino, impegnato nella pastorale, nell’insegnamento e nella collaborazione per risolvere gli innumerevoli problemi della ricostruzione del Mozambico.
Quella del P. Beppe è stata un’esistenza interpellata dalla radicalità, come rivelano le scommesse che l’hanno contraddistinta: «Condivisione di vita con la gente a cui siamo inviati, come fedeltà alla via seguita dal Cristo che si è svuotato e ci salva condividendo la nostra condizione di essere umani. … tensione verso uno stile di vita il più possibile vicino a quello della gente. Impegno e vigilanza a non fare uso di grandi mezzi, nella fedeltà al Dio che non cambia le pietre in pane ma che condivide le sofferenze e così le trasforma» (28.5.97).
Il Cristo risorto accolga nel suo Regno questo suo discepolo buono e generoso.

Fr. Giuseppe Mauri died in a car accident in Tavira (about 7 miles from Chibututuine) in the morning of April 15 2004. He had been traveling towards Maputo when a bus, coming from the opposite direction, invaded his side of the road and collided with his car, killing him instantly. Born in Ronco Briantino (Milan), on Oct. 14 1952, he was 51 years old.
Fr. Giuseppe decided to become a Xaverian after hearing Fr. Bruno Marchetti speak at the Paina oratory. He began his formation journey in Alzano in 1963; he then went to Desio, Cremona, Nizza Monferrato (where he did Novitiate and made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1971), Parma (I and II Theology) and Salerno as Prefect. He was then assigned to the community of Finchley, London (1976-80), where he completed the theology curriculum at the Missionary Institute London. This period was a very meaningful formation experience: “ Life in a multi-national community helped me to liberate myself from an excessively Italian mentality, to give precedence to relationships over work, to smooth the rough edges of my character, to assimilate elements of other mentalities and to free the Word of God from an exclusively Italian interpretation” (Oct. 30 1982). He was ordained a priest on Sept. 21 1980 in Parma.
Immediately after ordination, he was assigned to the mission in Congo-Zaire. He was convinced that “the first step towards the assimilation of a new culture consists in learning the language well” (Oct. 30 1982), so he applied himself diligently to the study of French and, once in Africa (Sept. 1981), Swahili. He worked in Shabunda and, in the period 1983-89 in Bunyakiri, a community where the Xaverians were working closely with lay missionaries, something that better incarnated his idea of mission: “…to share the life conditions of the people who surround us… to honor the task of embodying the Word of God who is working each day to bring about a new heaven and a new earth.” (Oct. 30 1982).
The period 1989-93 saw him in the Region of Great Britain. He was elected Regional Superior, a task that was particularly hard for him because he found it difficult to live “the three values that have always given me life and sustained me… listening assiduously to the Word of God, an intense community life, and sharing the life of the people” (July 28 1993). He was assigned to the Central Delegation in 1993 as Rector of the house of Finchley-London. In the words of the Superior Delegate at the time, he carried out his task “with great dedication, kindness, patience and competence, as a brother among brothers” (Nov. 20 1997).
At the end of 1997, he willingly accepted an assignment to the first Xaverian mission in Mozambique. His project was even more clearly defined in favor of mission in community with lay people because “although I do not deny the prophetic value of the religious community, I believe that community with lay people has greater ministerial and vocational potential” (Feb. 9 1997). He arrived in Mozambique in the second half of 1998. He worked in Chibututuine, in the ecclesial-missionary Fraternity entrusted to the Lay Missionary Center of Piombino. He was engaged in pastoral work, teaching and cooperation in projects geared towards resolving the countless problems involved in the reconstruction of Mozambique.
Fr. Beppe rose to radical challenges, something that is borne out by the values in which he invested his life and energies with distinction: “Share the life of the people to whom we are sent, imitating Christ who emptied himself and brings us salvation by sharing our human condition… Strive to live a style of life as close as possible to that of the people. Commitment and vigilance in order to avoid using great resources, in fidelity to God who doesn’t change stones into bread, but shares our suffering and, thereby, transforms it” (May 28, 1997).
May the Risen Christ welcome into his Reign this good and generous disciple.

Le père Joseph Mauri est décédé dans un accident de circulation vers 8h00 le 15 avril 2004, à Tavira (un village à 10 km de Chibututuine). Notre confrère, en se rendant à Maputo, a subitement croisé un bus qui occupait complètement la voie. Il est mort sur le coup dans cette collision violente. Il était proche de ses 52 ans, étant né à Ronco Briantino (Milan) le 14 octobre 1952.
Le père Joseph avait pris la décision de devenir xavérien après avoir écouté, au Centre Jeunes de Paina (Milan), le témoignage du père Bruno Marchetti. Joseph avait commencé à Alzano en 1963 une formation poursuivie à Desio, Cremona, Nizza (où il fit le Noviciat et sa profession religieuse le 12.09.1971) et Parme. Il termina ses études théologiques à Londres auprès des Missionnaires de Mill-Hill (1976-1980). Il décrit ainsi cette expérience significative: J’ai trouvé très enrichissant de vivre dans une communauté interculturelle. J’ai pu me libérer d’une certaine mentalité italienne, pour privilégier les relations dans nos activités, améliorer mon caractère, assumer les éléments d’autres cultures, libérer la Parole de Dieu de ma lecture italienne (30.10.1982). Il fut ordonné prêtre le 21 septembre 1980 à Parme.
Après son ordination, il fut affecté au Zaïre (R.D.Congo). Convaincu que le premier pas vers l’assimilation d’une nouvelle culture est le bon apprentissage de la langue (30.10.1982), il étudia activement le français et, une fois arrivé au Zaïre (septembre 1981), le swahili. Il travailla à Shabunda et surtout à Bunyakiri (1983-1989), une communauté où les xavériens travaillaient en collaboration étroite avec les laïcs et qui vivaient au mieux son idée de mission : partager les conditions de vie de personnes qui nous entourent (…), honorer la tâche de donner chair à la Parole de Dieu, chaque jour à l’oeuvre pour la venue d’une terre nouvelle et des cieux nouveaux (30.10.1982).
Pendant les années 1989-1993, il fut Supérieur Régional de la Région Xavérienne de Grande-Bretagne. Ce nouvel engagement lui coûta particulièrement car il trouvait difficile de vivre les trois valeurs qui le soutenait constamment: l’écoute assidue de la Parole de Dieu, une vie communautaire intense, le partage de la vie des gens (28.07.1993).
Par la suite, la Direction Générale le nomma Supérieur de la maison de formation de Londres où il se donna avec beaucoup de bonté, patience et compétence, comme frère parmi les frères.
A la fin du 1997, il accueillit favorablement l’affectation au Mozambique. Il fit partie de la première équipe des Missionnaires Xavériens affectés au Mozambique. Ils y arrivèrent l’année suivante. Il travailla à Chibututuine, dans la fraternité missionnaire confiée au Centre Missionnaire des Laïcs de Piombino (Italie).
L’existence du père Joseph a été marquée par la radicalité, comme le prouvent les propos de son activité au Mozambique :
Partage de vie avec les gens, là où nous sommes envoyés, comme fidélité au chemin suivi par le Christ qui s’est dépouillé de lui-même et nous sauve en partageant notre condition humaine (…) ; tension vers un style de vie de plus en plus proche des gens. Engagement et vigilance pour ne pas utiliser des « gros moyens », dans la fidélité avec Dieu qui ne change pas les pierres en pain mais partage les souffrances et, ainsi, les transforme (28.05.1997).
Que le Christ Ressuscité accueille dans son royaume son disciple bon et généreux.
Je voudrais faire voir, par ma vie, que Dieu seul est important et donne sens à l’existence.
Je suis, ensuite, convaincu que, si tu as trouvé un trésor, tu ne peux pas le garder pour toi seul: il faut le partager aux autres.
Si tu as rencontré le Christ, tu dois le porter aux autres, tu dois le leur montrer pour qu’eux aussi, à leur tour, soient dans le bonheur.
