Il 31 marzo 2011, verso le 09.00 a Parma in Casa Madre, è morto P. Bruno Orrù. Lo scorso novembre, a Padang, aveva subito un intervento chirurgico per l'asportazione di un adenocarcinoma alla pleura sinistra. Dal 20 febbraio era in cura a Parma.
Aveva 75 anni compiuti, essendo nato a S. Antioco (Cagliari) il 10.08.1935.
La vocazione di P. Bruno – entrato all'Istituto a Tortolì nel 1949, dopo aver frequentato i tre anni di avviamento professionale – fu il frutto di una comunità cristiana con un intreccio virtuoso di relazioni. «La mia vocazione – scrisse nel 1993 P. Bruno - rientra nella straordinarietà dell'ordinario. Il solito padre missionario, saveriano, in questo caso P. Usai, predica … Non so perché, mentre rientravo a casa insieme ad un amico di infanzia, gli dissi che sarei andato in missione anche io. Poi in confessione [lo dissi] al vice parroco … la cosa venne alle orecchie del parroco, una vera anima missionaria e da lui passò a suor Claudina, la Superiora e quasi la madre di tutto il paese e da lì ai miei genitori». Per l'entrata a Tortolì fece tutto il parroco. L'iter formativo saveriano proseguì poi a Macomer (II e III media), Zelarino (Biennio ginnasiale), S. Pietro in Vincoli (Noviziato e Prima Professione il 12.9.1955), Desio (i tre anni di Liceo), Nizza Monferrato (prefettato), Piacenza (Propedeutica), Parma (I Teologia) e in fine, essendo stato assegnato agli USA nel 1961, Milwaukee (gli ultimi tre anni di Teologia e ordinazione presbiterale 29.9.1963).
Non si possono dimenticare le valutazioni dei formatori alla fine del periodo formativo: P. Bruno è «maturo per età, saggezza e grazia. Ha un profondo senso del dovere; coscienzioso del compimento del suo ufficio; pietà soda e serena; talvolta un po' secco nel trattare con i confratelli; si presta volentieri per il bene della comunità» ( Presentazione ai ministeri ordinati).
Dopo l'ordinazione fu insegnante di latino e greco nel seminario Saveriano di Holliston e, contemporaneamente studente di Lingue classiche al Boston College University dove conseguì il MA in latino nel 1967.
Dal 1972 al 1976 ebbe l'incarico di Direttore dell'Ufficio Missionario e di Procuratore delle Missioni. «Accanto a questo impegno, altrettanto missionario che essere in campo, l'attività pastorale che comprende non solo il ministero a fine settimana e la cura di tutto il dipartimento della musica e canto per tutte le messe ma anche un counseling, visite alle famiglie e agli ospedali. Questa è l'attività che mi dà più soddisfazione. La gioia sta nel fatto che mi sento molto utile. Una settimana fa sono diventato cittadino americano, e questo, spero mi agevoli in qualche modo il mio futuro lavoro in terra di missione. Anche senza la cittadinanza mi sentivo già parte di questo popolo che ammiro, pur con i suoi difetti» (2.10.75).«Era un confratello generoso, competente, lavoratore» (P. Bob S. Maloney, 31.3.11).
Nel 1976, dopo ripetute domande, fu destinato alla missione, in Indonesia dove visse dal 1977 al febbraio del 2011, impegnato nella pastorale, nella formazione e nel servizio alla Direzione regionale (Consigliere Regionale per cinque mandati).
Dopo l'anno di lingua, gli fu affidata la cura pastorale delle comunità cristiane di Bagansiapi-Api e Duri. Dal 1987 al 1990 guidò la parrocchia della Cattedrale di Padang. I dodici anni di Sumatra furono, come ricordava nella lettera del 27.8.93, «meravigliosi per il contatto con la gente, i programmi di evangelizzazione fatti insieme; mi hanno fatto crescere nella fede in particolare i lebbrosi, i Batak e i numerosi gruppi organizzatissimi della cattedrale».
Dal 1990 al 2006 fu Maestro dei novizi, «il fratello maggiore che dà una mano al fratello minore nel conoscere se stesso nella luce di Gesù Cristo. In una atmosfera di grande fiducia, nella continua esortazione ad essere liberi per potere fare le scelte coraggiose» (P. Alphonsus, 2.4.11).
Libertà anche testimoniata da P. Bruno proprio quando si scoprì il tumore che lo portò alla tomba. «Fosse successo alcuni anni fa – ha scritto al P. Generale il 23.12.10 - sarei andato in panico e paura. Ora mi ha portato a una presenza costante davanti al Signore …noi siamo suoi, suo possesso; io in voi e voi in me e io nel Padre; la convinzione reale della inabitazione della Trinità … Mi hanno aiutato molto le parole del Fondatore sul portare Cristo dappertutto e questo mi faceva includere la malattia; le parole delle Costituzioni sulla malattia, la vecchiaia e la morte sono state belle compagne in questa nuova esperienza della mia vita».
Il Signore lo accolga nella Pasqua eterna.

Fr. Bruno Orrù died in the Mother House, in Parma, on March 31 2011. In November of 2010, he had surgery to remove a tumor and, from Feb. 20 2011, he was being looked after in the Motherhouse.Born in S. Antioco (Cagliari, Italy), on Aug. 10, 1935, he was 75 years old.
The vocation of Fr. Bruno – who joined the Institute at Tortolì in 1949 after three years of professional training – was born in a Christian community with a virtuous network of relationships. In 1993, Fr. Bruno wrote: «My vocation was born in an extraordinary ordinariness. A visit and a sermon from the usual missionary, in this case, a Xaverian, Fr. Usai… I don’t know why, but as I was returning home with a childhood friend, I said to him that I would go to the missions too. I repeated this to the priest in confession… it reached the ears of the parish priest, who had a true missionary heart, and from there Sr. Claudina, who was a mother figure for the entire village, and my own mother, also found out». The parish priest arranged for his entrance in Tortolì. Fr. Bruno completed the Xaverian study program in various stages: Macomer, Zelarino, S. Pietro in Vincoli (Novitiate and First Profession on Sept. 12 1955), Desio, Nizza Monferrato (prefect), Piacenza, Parma (I Theology) and, finally, after his assignment to the United States of America in 1961, Milwaukee (the last three years of theology and ordination to the priesthood on Sept. 29 1963).
At the end of his basic formation program, his formators said of him: «He is mature for his age and possesses wisdom and grace. He has a profound sense of duty; he is conscientious in performing his tasks; he has a solid and serene piety; sometimes he is a little abrupt in his dealings with the confreres; he is very helpful in community» (Presentation to the ordained ministries).
After his ordination, he taught Latin and Greek at the Xaverian Seminary of Holliston USA and, at the same time, he studied classical Languages at Boston College University, where he obtained a Masters in Latin in 1967.
From 1972 until 1976, he was Director of the Missionary Office and Procurator for the Missions. «In addition to this task, which is just as missionary as being in the direct mission field, my pastoral activity includes not only the weekend ministry and liturgical music, but also counseling, visits to families and hospitals. This is the activity that gives me the most satisfaction. The joy is a result of the fact that I feel very useful. A week ago I became an American citizen, and I hope that this will in some way help my future work in the mission. Even before I became an American citizen, I already felt a part of this nation which I admire, albeit with its defects» (Oct. 2, 1975).
«Fr. Bruno was a generous, competent and hard-working confrere» (Fr. Bob S. Maloney, March 31, 2011).
In 1976, after repeated requests, he was assigned to Indonesia, where he lived and worked from 1977 until February 2011. He was involved in pastoral work, formation and serving the Regional Direction (five mandates as Regional Councilor).\
After a year of language study, he was entrusted with the pastoral care of the Christian communities of Bagansiapi-Api and Duri. From 1987 until 1990, he guided the parish of the Cathedral of Padang. The twelve years at Sumatra were, in his own words «wonderful for the contacts I had with the people, the evangelization programs we carried out together; in a special way, I grew in the faith thanks to the lepers, the Batak and the many well-organized groups of the Cathedral» (Aug. 27, 1993).
From 1990 until 2006 he was Master of Novices, «the elder brother that helped his younger brothers to know themselves better in the light of Jesus Christ. In an atmosphere of great trust, in the continuous exhortation to be free in order to make courageous choices» (Fr. Alphonsus, April 2, 2011).
A freedom that Fr. Bruno bore witness to when his fatal illness was diagnosed. He wrote to the Superior General on Dec. 23 2010: «If this had happened to me some years ago, I would have panicked. Now it has made me feel the constant presence of the Lord… We are his possession; I in you, you in me, and I in the Father; the real conviction of being inhabited by the Trinity… I was greatly helped by the words of the Founder in being united to Christ at all times, including illness; the words of the Constitutions on illness, old age and death were wonderful companions during this new experience of my life».
