1952 - 2024

Sabato 14 dicembre 2024, nel tardo pomeriggio, è stato rinvenuto esanime il nostro confratello p. Luis Pérez Hernández. I confratelli sono entrati nella sua stanza, Domus di Makeni, Sierra Leone, trovandolo riversato nel bagno. Il medico ha dichiarato la sua morte per arresto cardiaco. P. Luis aveva 72 anni compiuti, essendo nato il 16 giugno 1952 a Toledo, Spagna.

Luis matura la vocazione missionaria grazie alla predicazione di alcuni missionari sull’urgenza dell’annuncio. Conosce i Missionari Saveriani attraverso la rivista “Misioneros Javerianos”, scrivendo una lettera indirizzata a p. “Aquiles Figini, primer Javeriano con el que traté”. All’età di 16 anni, Luis entra nella Casa Apostolica di Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), per frequentare il “4° anno di Bachiller” (Liceo, settembre 1968), dopo essere stato nelle scuole pubbliche: “Escuelas Anejas del Magisterio, Escuelas de la Fábrica de Armas, Escuela de Formación Industrial de la Fábrica de Armas de Toledo, e il baccellierato a Madrid, nel Colegio Delfos e nell’Instituto Cardenal Cisneros”. 

Luis entra in Noviziato a Pozuelo de Alarcón il 2 ottobre 1971 e qui emette la prima professione religiosa e missionaria (03.10.1972). Riceve la sua formazione teologica a Pozuelo de Alarcón (1972-1973; 1974-1978). Per un anno è anche prefetto nella casa apostolica di Guernica, Spagna (1973-1974) e allo stesso tempo è insegnante di religione al Liceo Guernica. Il 5 novembre 1976 emette la Professione Perpetua a Pozuelo de Alarcón e il 17 dicembre 1977 viene ordinato presbitero.

Dal 1978 al 1981, p. Luis è Promotore Vocazionale a Pamplona. Nello stesso periodo porta avanti il servizio di economo e nell’ultimo anno quello di Rettore. Dal 1981 al 1989 è Superiore Provinciale, risiedendo nella Domus di Madrid. Nello stesso periodo è anche Economo Regionale.

Nel 1983 p. Luis partecipa all’ XI Capitolo Generale e nel 1989 prende parte al XII Capitolo Generale dove viene eletto Consigliere Generale. Come Consigliere Generale è anche “prefetto per l’Economia e per la Vita Saveriana”, “presidente del Consiglio degli affari economici” e “presidente del Segretariato per la Vita Saveriana”. Durante il suo servizio di Consigliere Generale visita i confratelli in più di 15 circoscrizioni e alcune di esse per due o tre volte (1989-1995).

Concluso il suo mandato, p. Luis viene destinato alla Sierra Leone. Dopo più di un anno trascorso a Londra per lo studio della lingua inglese, nell’ottobre del 1997 arriva a Kambia, Sierra Leone, dove partecipa al corso di introduzione alla missione. Dal 1998 al 1999 è a Freetown-Kissy come rettore ed economo regionale. Dal 1998 al 2001 è anche vice regionale. A motivo della guerra civile, trascorre alcuni mesi in Spagna, per poi ritornare in Sierra Leone dove presta servizio come rettore della comunità di Freetown-Kissy (1999-2002).

Dopo un periodo di aggiornamento a Roma – Collegio Conforti, p. Luis viene destinato alla Circoscrizione della Spagna (2002-2014). A Madrid, nella casa di formazione, svolge i seguenti servizi: formatore, economo locale, rettore e direttore del giornalino “Misioneros Javerianos”. Dal 2004 al 2010 è vice Superiore Regionale, e dal 2010 al 2013 è vice superiore di Delegazione.

Nel 2014 p. Luis riparte per la Sierra Leone. Risiede a Makeni e svolge il servizio di rettore della Domus, Vice Superiore Regionale (2015-2018), Consigliere regionale (2018-2021) ed economo regionale.

«…da quando ho deciso, otto anni fa, di dare la mia vita alla missione, sono maturato rispetto alla mia prima decisione e nel corso degli anni il mio desiderio di donarmi a Dio e alla Chiesa in un'opzione missionaria è diventato sempre più forte. Perciò credo che la mia vocazione all'interno della Chiesa sia missionaria... Mi sento identificato con il progetto della famiglia Saveriana di realizzare il carisma missionario. Dopo quattro anni di vita con i Saveriani e altri quattro come professo temporaneo, mi sono reso conto che il progetto di vita della Congregazione per realizzare il compito missionario è positivo, soprattutto per tre considerazioni: il fatto che lo scopo esclusivo della congregazione sia l'attività missionaria; il fatto che, essendo religiosi, formiamo una famiglia e viviamo la vocazione missionaria con un carattere comunitario; e in terzo luogo, che essendo un'opera comunitaria e all'interno di una famiglia religiosa, il lavoro missionario abbia maggiori possibilità di efficacia, testimonianza e continuità…» (dalla domanda autografa in spagnolo rivolta al superiore provinciale p. Pablo Zurlo, per chiedere di essere ammesso alla Professione Perpetua, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Spagna, 7 giugno 1976). 

«…per quanto mi riguarda, domani parto per Londra, mi hanno detto che la programmazione comunitaria è prevista per sabato 23 e vorrei parteciparvi. Spero di trascorrere a Londra un proficuo periodo di preparazione iniziale alla missione. In questo periodo a Toledo mi sono riposato, ho staccato la spina dalla tappa precedente e non vedo l'ora che arrivi la prossima. Gli anni trascorsi nella Direzione Generale, lavorando insieme e in comunione, sono stati molto positivi per me; sono sinceramente e profondamente grato per la tua dedizione, fraternità, delicatezza e tutto il resto .... che ha contribuito molto a rendere la nostra “esperienza romana e universale” positiva e arricchente…» (da una lettera autografa in spagnolo a p. Francesco Marini, Toledo 20 settembre 1995). 

Sabato 14 dicembre 2024, P. Luis sale in Cielo per contemplare la Gloria del “Dio-con-noi”.

Fr. LUIS PÉREZ HERNÁNDEZ

1952 - 2024

In the late afternoon of Saturday, December 14^th, 2024, our 72-year-old confrere Fr. Luis Pérez Hernández was found lifeless, lying on the bathroom floor, by the confreres that entered his room in the Domus of Makeni, Sierra Leone. The doctor declared his death was due to cardiac arrest, which occurred a few hours before he was found. Fr. Luis was born on June 16^th, 1952, in Toledo, Spain.

Young Luis developed his missionary vocation following some missionaries’ preaching on the urgency of proclaiming the Gospel. He came to know the Xaverian Missionaries thanks to the magazine Misioneros Javerianos, at whose address he sent a letter to Fr. “Aquiles Figini, primer Javeriano con el que traté.” (Fr. Achilles Figini, the first Xaverian whom I have ever dealt with). At the age of 16, Luis entered the Casa Apostolica (minor seminary) in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) to attend the 4^th year of Bachiller (high school, September 1968) after having attended the following public schools: “Escuelas Anejas del Magisterio, Escuelas de la Fábrica de Armas, Escuela de Formación Industrial de la Fábrica de Armas de Toledo, e il baccellierato a Madrid, nel Colegio Delfos e nell’Instituto Cardenal Cisneros” (School attached to the Teacher Training College, School of the Arms Factory, Industrial Training School of the Toledo Arms Factory, and the baccalaureate in Madrid, at the Delfos School and the Cardenal Cisneros Institute).

On October 2^nd, 1971, Luis began his Novitiate in Pozuelo de Alarcón where he made his first religious and missionary profession (October 3^rd, 1972). In Pozuelo de Alarcón, he was trained in theology (1972-1973; 1974-1978). For one year, he was also Prefect of students in the Casa Apostolica, Guernica, Spain (1973-1974), while also teaching religion in Liceo Guernica. On November 5^th, 1976, he made his perpetual profession in Pozuelo de Alarcón and on December 17^th, 1977, he was ordained a priest. 

From 1978 to 1981, Fr. Luis worked as Vocations Promoter in Pamplona. There, in that same period, he was Treasurer and, in the last year, Rector.

From 1981 to 1989, he was Provincial Superior, residing at the Domus in Madrid. In that same period, he was also Regional Treasurer.

In 1983, Fr. Luis took part in the XI General Chapter and, in 1989, in the XII General Chapter where he was elected General Councillor. As a General Councillor, he was also “Prefect for Economy and Xaverian life,” “President of the Council for Economic Affairs” and “President of the Secretariat for Xaverian life.” During his tenure as General Councillor, he paid visit to confreres in more than 15 circumscriptions, some of which he visited twice or thrice (1989-1995).

At the end of his term as Councillor, Fr. Luis was assigned to Sierra Leone. In October 1997, after more than one year in London for the study of English, he arrived in Kambia, Sierra Leone, where he attended a programme of introduction to the mission. From 1998 to 1999, he was in Freetown-Kissy, as Rector and Regional Treasurer. From 1998 to 2001, he was also Vice Regional. Following the outbreak of the civil war, he spent few months in Spain, but then returned to Sierra Leone to carry out the task of Rector of the community in Freetown-Kissy (1999-2002).

After a short sabbatical in Rome (Conforti College), Fr. Luis was assigned to the Circumscription of Spain (2002-2014). In the formation house in Madrid, he carried out the following tasks: formator, local treasurer, rector and editor of the bulletin Misioneros Javerianos. From 2004 to 2010, he was Regional Superior, and from 2010 to 2013, Vice Superior of Delegation. 

In 2014, Fr. Luis returned to Sierra Leone. He resided in Makeni where he carried out the task of Rector of the Domus, Vice Regional Superior (2015-2018), Regional Councillor (2018-2021) and Regional Treasurer.

«Eight years ago I decided to give my life to the mission. Since then, I have matured in my first decision and over the years my desire to give myself to God and the Church in a missionary option has become progressively stronger. This is why I believe that my vocation within the Church is missionary... I identify with the project of the Xaverian family to realise the missionary charism. After four years living with the Xaverians and other four as a temporary professed, I have understood that the life project of the Congregation to fulfil the missionary task is positive, mainly because of three considerations: the fact that the exclusive purpose of the Congregation is the missionary activity; the fact that, being religious, we form a family and live a missionary vocation characterised by community life; and thirdly, that since it is a community effort within a religious family, the missionary work has greater possibilities for effectiveness, witness and continuity…» (from a letter in Spanish to the Provincial Superior, Fr. «As for me, tomorrow I am going to leave for London. I was told that community planning is scheduled for Saturday the 23^rd and I would like to take part in it. In London I hope to spend a fruitful period of initial preparation to the mission. During this time in Toledo I took a rest, I ‘pulled the plug’ on the previous stage and now I am looking forward to the next one. The years I spent in the General Direction, working together and in communion, have been very positive for me; I am sincerely and deeply grateful for your dedication, fraternity, gentleness, and all the rest (…) that contributed to making our ‘Roman and universal’ experience positive and enriching…» (from a letter in Spanish to Fr. Francesco Marini. Toledo, September 20^th, 1995).

On Saturday, December 14^th, 2024, Fr. Luis went up to Heaven to contemplate the Glory of the “God-with-us”.
