P. Amedeo Pelizzo

All’Ospedale di Parma, intorno alle 08.00 della domenica 26.3.2006, è morto il P. Amedeo Pelizzo. Era stato ricoverato cinque giorni prima, perché colpito da ictus. Risiedeva a Parma dal giugno 2000 dove per cinque anni, come scrive P. G. Ferrari (28.3.06), «[lo si vedeva apparire] dai corridoi della Casa Madre, con il volto sorridente, appoggiato sul bastoncino che lo accompagnava costantemente, attento e riconoscente con tutti, elegante e disponibile, fraterno e accogliente».
Aveva quasi 90 anni, essendo nato a Faedis (Udine) il 23.10.1916.
P. Amedeo entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1942, già sacerdote della archidiocesi di Udine. Ormai in partenza per S. Pietro in Vincoli, scriveva: «Potrò dire al Signore, come il Profeta Isaia: “Signore, se il campo è vasto, se la messe è molta mentre gli operai sono pochi, ecce ego, mitte me”» (5.5.42).
E così il P. Maestro lo presentava per la Prima Professione: «Cultura e formazione religiosa dimostrano solidità e profondità. Nel ministero è attivo e sodo e di spirito di sacrificio. Ama, cura e vive la vita interiore. Ha tanta buona volontà di lavorare in ogni modo per servire bene la grande Causa che ha abbracciato con entusiasmo. Va accolto in Congregazione con gioia» (20.7.43).
Dopo la Professione, non essendo possibile partire per la Cina a causa della seconda guerra mondiale, fu insegnante, vicerettore ed economo a Grumone: sei anni (43-49) di questue nella campagna lombardo-emiliana, di ministero pastorale, di scuola e con la responsabilità della disciplina e delle attività comunitarie. Dal 49 al 54 lavorò a Zelarino, come vicerettore, insegnante, studente di Lettere all’Università di Padova. Ancora anni non facili, in una casa appena aperta, in un’Italia duramente impegnata nella ricostruzione: «sono arrivato a luglio molto stanco… il vicerettore, [deve essere] un collaboratore di prim’ordine e un formatore… esortando, incoraggiando, vigilando, correggendo» (18.1.51).
Nel 1954 fu destinato alla Scozia per lo studio dell’inglese e per l’insegnamento agli aspiranti scozzesi. L’anno successivo invece poté partire per il Bangladesh, allora Pakistan orientale: «il mio desiderio è di passare almeno alcuni anni in qualche villaggio». Ma la salute non lo sostenne e dopo due anni di Direttore della scuola S. Giuseppe di Khulna, nel dicembre 1958, dovette rientrare in Italia.
Rimessosi in salute, ricoprì dal 1959 al 1969 diversi incarichi nell’ambito della formazione: Rettore della casa di Zelarino (60-61); Segretario generale degli studi alle dipendenze del Prefetto degli Studi (61-66); primo Consigliere e Sostituto del Delegato generale della Delegazione delle Scuole Apostoliche d’Italia (63-66); Rettore, infine, a Desio, della comunità delle vocazioni adulte (66-69).
Nel 1969 iniziò il suo servizio alla Direzione Generale. In novembre fu incaricato della Segreteria di coordinamento per la preparazione del IX Capitolo Generale, “complementare del Capitolo Speciale del 1966” e che si proponeva un attento ripensamento delle norme dell’Istituto. Dal 70 al 71 fu Consigliere Generale in sostituzione del defunto P. De Zen. Ricoprì quindi l’incarico di Segretario Generale (71-77 e 83-93), Archivista (77-80), Redattore dei Profili dei confratelli defunti (71-99).
Ringraziandolo per gli anni trascorsi nella comunità della DG, l’allora Superiore Generale sottolineava del P. Amedeo: «la dedizione al lavoro e alla stessa DG, la precisione nella sostanza e nella forma, l’impegno, la discrezione, addirittura la delicatezza nel prevenire le richieste» (7.9.93).
Il P. Amedeo stesso, nella lettera di congedo, mentre ringraziava i confratelli delle ‘sue’ Direzioni Generali per la fiducia, stima e comprensione concessegli, scriveva: «sono molto grato al Signore e a voi per avere potuto vivere per tanti anni nel cuore della Congregazione; prendere parte da vicino alle sue vicende, liete o tristi […] per avermi data la possibilità di conoscere da vicino tanti confratelli, vivi o defunti, il loro attaccamento alla missione, alla Congregazione, alla vocazione» (8.6.93).
Il Signore accolga nella Pasqua eterna questo suo servo premuroso e fedele.

Fr. Amedeo Pelizzo died in the Parma Hospital at 8.00 a.m. on March 26, 2006. He had been admitted to hospital five days earlier after suffering a stroke. He had been a member of the Parma community since June 2000 where, in the words of Fr. G. Ferrari (March 28 2006), for five years, «[he could be seen] in the corridors of the Mother House, leaning on his stick, a smile on his face, attentive and grateful to everyone, elegant and available, fraternal and welcoming».
Born in Faedis (Udine) on October 23 1916, Fr. Amedeo was almost 90 years old. Fr. Amedeo was already a priest of the archdiocese of Udine when he joined the Xaverians in 1942. Before he left for S. Pietro in Vincoli, he wrote: «Like the prophet Isaiah, I too shall be able to say: “Lord, if the field is vast, if the harvest is great and the laborers few, here I am, send me”» (May 5 1942).
The Novice Master thus presented him to First Profession: «He possesses a solid and profound cultural and religious formation. He is an active and hard worker in the ministry and possesses a true spirit of sacrifice. He loves, cultivates and lives the interior life. He shows a great willingness to do anything for the great Cause he has enthusiastically embraced. He should be welcomed with joy into the Congregation» (July 20 1943).
Since the Second World War made it impossible to leave for China, Fr. Amedeo was assigned to other tasks after his Profession: teacher, vice-rector and administrator at Grumone; six years (1943-49) of collecting food-offerings in the countryside villages of the Lombardy and Emilia Romagna Regions, pastoral ministry, school and the supervision of discipline and community activities. In the period 1949-1954, he worked at Zelarino as vice-rector, teacher and student of Literature at Padua University. They were far from easy years, in a house that had just been opened, and in a period when Italy was under reconstruction: «I was very tired by the time July arrived…the vice-rector, [must be] a first class collaborator and a formator … exhorting, encouraging, supervising, correcting » (Jan. 18 1951).
In 1954 Fr. Pelizzo was assigned to Scotland to learn English and to teach the Scottish aspirants to Xaverian life. He left the following year for Bangladesh, which was then called East Pakistan: «my desire is to spend at least some years in a village». However, his health did not sustain him and, after two years as Director of St. Joseph’s school, Khulna, he had to return to Italy in December 1958.
After his health improved, Fr. Pelizzo held various tasks in the formation field in the period 1959-1969: Rector of the Zelarino House (1960-61); General Secretary of Studies under the Prefect of Studies (1961-66); senior Councilor and Substitute of the General Delegate for the Delegation of Xaverian Minor Seminaries in Italy (1963-66) and Rector of the adult vocation community in Desio (1966-69).
In 1969 he began his service to the General Direction. In November of that year he was put in charge of the coordinating Secretariat for the preparation of the IX General Chapter, which was “complementary to the Special General Chapter of 1966” which aimed at a careful rethinking of the Institute’s norms. In the year 1970-71 he succeeded the late Fr. De Zen as General Councilor. He then held the posts of General Secretary (1971-77 and 1983-93), Archivist (1977-80) and editor of the biographical Profiles of deceased confreres (1971-99).
Thanking him for the years spent in the community of the General Direction, the then Superior General emphasized: « his dedication to his work and the General Direction, his preciseness in substance and form, his commitment, discretion and the delicate way in which he would anticipate requests » (Sept. 7 1993).
Fr. Amedeo wrote a farewell letter in which he thanked the confreres of ‘his’ General Directions for the trust, esteem and comprehension they showed towards him. He also wrote: «I am very grateful to the Lord and to you for allowing me to live for so many years at the heart of the Congregation, participating closely in its happy and sad events […] for giving me the possibility of knowing so many confreres, living and deceased, their attachment to the mission, the Congregation and their vocation » (June 8 1993).
May the Lord welcome this kind and faithful servant into his Kingdom.
