P. Sandro Sacchetti

Alle 03.10 del 3.11.2001, a Parma nella Casa di Cura delle Piccole Figlie, consunto dalla leucemia, si è spento il P. Sandro Sacchetti.
Il male, comparso nel 1997 e bloccato dalle cure prontamente attivate dai medici brasiliani, aveva ripreso la sua azione devastatrice nel settembre dello scorso anno. Il 9 settembre u.s. il P. Sandro era rientrato in Italia e il mese successivo era stato ricoverato, ormai allo stato terminale, nella Casa di Cura delle Piccole Figlie dove fu assistito affettuosamente, oltre che dai confratelli, dai famigliari che si alternavano al suo capezzale.
Aveva 68 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Cesena (Forlì) il 15 febbraio 1933.
Allievo del Seminario di Cesena nei cinque anni delle medie inferiori e del Ginnasio (44-49), entrò tra i Saveriani in Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli il 31.08.1949. I motivi profondi della sua scelta sono rivelati nella lettera del 24.7.1949: “… non era più tempo di sognare ma di operare. Non più sogni di avventure alimentavano la fiamma missionaria, ma la vista del Maestro crocifisso, la sua parola infallibile, il premio eterno, l’esempio dei Martiri, dei missionari e la considerazione del valore di un’anima”. Emessa la Professione Religiosa il 12.09.1950, frequentò le tre classi del Liceo a Desio (50-53); fu quindi prefetto a Vicenza (53-54); concluse il suo curriculum formativo con i quattro anni di teologia a Piacenza (54-58). Fu ordinato presbitero a Cesena il 22.03.1958.
Dal 1958 al 1968 il P. Sandro fu impegnato dai Superiori in Italia: dopo alcuni mesi trascorsi a Udine, fu Vicerettore e insegnante di lettere nella Casa apostolica di Brescia (58-64), Rettore e ancora insegnante a Macomer (64-68). A Brescia incarnò la figura del Vicerettore così come tratteggiata nelle Bozze del Direttorio del Vicerettore (1969): “Egli è l’animatore della comunità dei ragazzi… Cura, insieme ai prefetti, le espressioni esteriori della pietà… educa alla disciplina… cerca tutti i mezzi e gli aiuti atti a rendere più efficace il rendimento scolastico”. A Macomer, oltre che alla formazione dei ragazzi, al servizio dell’autorità con i confratelli, dovette dedicarsi, in una situazione piuttosto aggrovigliata, al completamento della nuova sede dell’Istituto.
Nel 1968 ebbe la tanto sospirata destinazione alla missione: scriveva il 22.11.67: “O le missioni o la vita! Ne sento la necessità, per uscire da questo mondo così incivile ed entrare nella silvestre onestà di un altro mondo… per rifarmi le ossa”. Raggiunse il Brasile nel settembre del 1968 e in quella nuova patria trascorse praticamente tutto il resto della sua vita.
Dal 69 al 74 lavorò nella pastorale a Pirajù e, dopo un anno di Superiore nel seminario di Jaguapità, a Centenario do Sul: impegnato con i giovani, gli studenti e poi con i braccianti agricoli delle piantagioni di caffè, della canna da zucchero e del cotone; ed ancora, nei gruppi di riflessione, nelle visite alle piccole comunità rurali, alle famiglie, sempre cercando la liberazione integrale delle persone.
Dal 74 al 76 fu studente al Teresianum di Roma dove conseguì la licenza in Spiritualità. Tornato in Brasile, trascorse sei anni a Curitiba (77-83) come insegnante di Teologia e zelante animatore di gruppi laicali. Dall’84 al 98 fu ancora impegnato nella pastorale: a Coronel Fabriciano e Melo Viana (84-92), a Piracicaba (92-96) e a Hortolandia (97-98): anni densi di iniziative per la formazione di comunità di base, l’organizzazione del catechismo, le pastorali specializzate, la formazione dei Diaconi permanenti e, non ultima, l’amministrazione del Sacramento della Riconciliazione nelle riunioni dei Cursillos. Cesena (Forlì) il 15 febbraio 1933.
Infine, dal 98 al 2001, fu Maestro dei Novizi: un servizio impreziosito dalla testimonianza della sofferenza sopporta con la serenità provata in San Cristo Brescia, nel 1962… “Stasera ai tuoi piedi / più non mi appari un Cristo / che mi schiacci / Tu non sei un Cristo / che mi tormenti / ma esile e leggero / come la fiamma del tabernacolo / che bisbiglia / i suoi dolci misteri / Tu mi attiri / inaspettatamente”…

On Nov. 3 2001, at 3:10, Fr. Sandro Sacchetti died of leukemia in Parma, in the clinic run by the "Piccole Figlie" sisters.
The illness had appeared in 1997 and its progress was halted somewhat by the prompt treatment given to him by Brazilian doctors; it began to develop again, with devastating results, in September 2000. On Sept. 9, Fr. Sandro returned to Italy and, one month later, was hospitalized in the terminal stages of his illness. In the clinic he was assisted with love and affection by the confreres and family members who took turns at his bedside.
Born in Cesena, Forlė, on Feb. 15 1933, Fr. Sandro was 68 years old.
He was a student at the junior diocesan seminary of Cesena (1944-49), before joining the Xaverians in S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate on July 31 1949. The most profound reasons for his choice are revealed in a letter he wrote on July 24 1949: "...it was no longer time for dreaming but for action. My missionary desire was no longer nourished by dreams of adventure, but by the sight of the crucified Master, his infallible Word, the eternal reward, the example of the Martyrs, of the missionaries and the consideration of the value of a single soul." He made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1950 and frequented the three years of High School in Desio (1950-53); he was then prefect in Vicenza (1953-54); he concluded his formation course with four years of Theology in Piacenza (1954-58). He was ordained priest in Cesena on March 22 1958.
In the years 1958-68, Fr. Sandro served in Italy: after a few months in Udine, he was appointed Vice-rector and teacher in the junior seminary of Brescia (1958-64); he was later appointed Rector and teacher in Macomer (1964-68). In Brescia, he was the incarnation of the figure of the Vice-rector as described in the draft of the Directory of the Vice-rector (1969): "He is the animator of the boys' community... together with the prefects, he looks after the external expressions of piety... he educates the boys to discipline ... he looks for all the means that will help to improve their academic performance." In Macomer, besides the formation of the boys and the service of authority to the confreres, he had to dedicate himself, in what was quite a complicated situation, to the completion of the new house of the Congregation.
In 1968 he received the long desired assignment to the missions: in a letter dated Nov. 22 1967, he wrote: "I feel a strong need to leave this uncivilized world for the wild honesty of another." He arrived in Brazil in September 1968 and spent practically the rest of his life there.
From 1969 until 1974, he worked in pastoral activity in Pirajų and, after a year as superior in the seminary of Jaguapitā, he moved to Centenario do Sul: there he worked with the young people, the students and then the farm laborers of the coffee, sugar cane and cotton plantations; he was also kept busy with the reflection groups, visits to small rural communities and families, always striving for the integral liberation of the people.
From 1974 until 1976, he studied at the Teresuianum University of Rome where he obtained the License in Spirituality. Back in Brazil, he spent six years in Curitiba (1977- 83) teaching Theology and working zealously as animator of lay groups. In the period 1984-98, he was once again engaged in pastoral work: in Coronel Fabriciano and Melo Viana (1984-92), in Piracicaba (1992-96) and Hortolandia (1997-98): intense years of initiatives for the formation of basic communities, the organization of catechesis, specialized pastoral initiatives, the formation of permanent deacons and, last but not least, the administration of the sacrament of reconciliation in the meetings of the Cursillos.
Finally, from 1998 until 2001, he served as Novice Master, a precious service and witness especially during his years of terminal illness.
