P. Francesco Sozzi

Il 14 Novembre 2006, verso le 11,30, nell’Ospedale di Parma dove stava sottoponendosi ad una broncoscopia per rivelare l’entità di un tumore al polmone da poco diagnosticato, improvvisamente moriva il P. Francesco Sozzi. Aveva 79 anni essendo nato a Bratto di Castione della Presolana (BG) il 7 Febbraio 1927. Informato della gravità del tumore disse: “se questo male viene adesso è perché qualcuno ne ha bisogno e sono contento di offrirlo al Signore, lui sa”, suggellando così quella totalità di donazione religiosa e sacerdotale che aveva caratterizzato tutta la sua vita.
Era entrato a 19 anni nel 1946 nella nostra casa di Pedrengo. Le ragioni di questo ritardo, oltre che nei piani vocazionali del Signore, risiedono probabilmente nella morte prematura del padre (1929), oltre che nella guerra. Dopo pochi mesi passa a Grumone per continuare gli studi (ginnasio) interrotti da ben sei anni. Segue il noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli con la professione il 12/9/1950. Presentandolo il maestro si dichiara “favorevole, anzi favorevolissimo”, giudicandolo “retto e leale”.
Liceo a Desio (50-53), al termine del quale emette la professione perpetua: “quando feci la professione temporanea, nel mio cuore feci subito anche la professione perpetua e la rinnovai spesso nelle mani di Maria in questi tre anni (5/6/53 – domanda della PP)”. Prefetto a Udine (53-54), nel maggio 54 viene richiesto dalla DG di andare a completare gli studi in Brasile, aperto da un anno, in vista di aprire un seminario saveriano.
Da qui in avanti P. Chico (o Chicâo), eccetto alcune brevi pause in Italia, vivrà tutta la sua vita missionaria in Brasile sud.
Parte difatti per quel paese il 7/12/54. Dopo gli studi di teologia a Curitiba presso i Cappuccini (55-58), il 26.1.1958 viene ordinato presbitero a Curitiba da Mons. Assuero Bassi.
Destinato a Jaguapità per dare inizio alla scuola apostolica, vi svolge le funzioni di viceparroco (58-59), e poi di professore, direttore spirituale e economo (60-61). All’inizio del 1962 è a Cerro Azul col mandato di passare il collegio e la parrocchia alla diocesi. Torna come parroco a Jaguapità (63-65) e poi è parroco a Londrina (66-69). Nel frattempo dal 66 al 69 è anche Superiore Religioso.
Dal Luglio 69 al giugno 71 è a Tavernerio per motivi di salute. Tornato in Brasile, è a Londrina per ministero (71-73), parroco a Laranjeras do Sul (73-74) dove organizza la divisione della parrocchia in tre nuove parrocchie, poi a Nova Laranjeras (74-78) e a Verê (78-80). A Nova Laranjeras inizia ad occuparsi della pastorale indigenista dal momento che nell’area della parrocchia vivono due tribù indigene. Gli anni nella pastorale indigenista sono stati per lui “la più bella esperienza della mia vita missionaria”. Viene nominato anche delegato al CIMI Nazionale(Consiglio indigenista missionario). Rettore dello studentato di Curitiba (80-83), torna parroco a Laranjeras do Sul (83-85). Dall’81 all’84 è anche vice regionale.
Dopo un altro breve periodo in Italia a Desio come animatore missionario, nel 1986 è di nuovo in Brasile: vice parroco a Nova Laranjeras (86-88 e 96-97), parroco a Warta (87-96), e vice parroco a Laranjeras do Sul (97-2000).
Aggravandosi i problemi di salute che da tempo lo facevano soffrire, viene inviato nel seminario di Londrina (2000 – 2005) dove continua a svolgere con gioia quel ministero che la salute gli consente. Dal Giugno 2005 era in cura a Parma.
La vita di P. Sozzi può essere riassunta nella frase che nel 58 scriveva al suo maestro dei novizi, dopo l’ordinazione: “ho un solo desiderio: fare del bene e farne molto. Ripartirò contento, contentissimo, perché laggiù in Brasile c’è tanto bene da fare”.
Il Signore accolga questo suo servo entusiasta, attivo e fedele.

Fr. Francesco Sozzi died suddenly on Nov. 14 2006 in the Parma hospital where he had been admitted for a bronchoscopy to assess the gravity of a recently diagnosed tumor of the lung. Born on Feb. 7 1927 in Bratto di Castione della Presolana (BG), he was 79 years old.
When he was told of the serious nature of his illness, he said: “if this illness comes now it is because someone has need of it and I am happy to offer it to the Lord”, words which confirm the totality of his self-offering as a religious-priest that had characterized his entire life.
He joined the Xaverians in Pedrengo in 1946 when he was 19 years old. The reasons for his late entry, besides the Lord’s vocational designs upon him, were probably due to the premature death of his father (1929) and the war. A few months later he moved to Grumone to continue his high school studies that had been interrupted for six years. This was followed by the novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli and his First Profession on Sept. 12 1950. In his report, the Novice Master declared that he was “very favorable indeed”, judging him to be “honest and loyal”.
Francesco attended Liceo at Desio (1950-53) at the end of which he made his Final Profession: “as I made my First Profession, within my heart I also made my Final profession and I renewed it often in the hands of Our Blessed Lady during these past three years (June 5 1953 – application for Final Profession)”. He was prefect in Udine (1953-54) then, in May 1954, the General Direction asked him to complete his studies in Brazil, which had been opened the previous year, in view of establishing a Xaverian seminary.
From then onwards Fr. Chico (o Chicâo), with the exception of some short stays in Italy, lived his entire missionary life in South Brazil. He left for Brazil on Dec. 7 1954. After his theology studies at Curitiba with the Capuchins (1955-58), he was ordained priest on Jan. 26 1958 in Curitiba by Bishop Assuero Bassi. Assigned to Jaguapità to start the minor seminary, he worked as assistant priest in a parish (1958-59), and then as teacher, spiritual director and treasurer (1960-61).
At the beginning of 1962 he was in Cerro Azul with the mandate to hand over the school and the parish to the diocese. He returned as parish priest to Jaguapità (1963-65) and then as parish priest in Londrina (1966-69). In the meantime, from 1966 until 1969, he was also the Religious Superior. He spent the period of July 1969-June 1971 in Tavernerio on health grounds.
When he returned to Brazil, he worked in Londrina in ministry (1971-73), as parish priest in Laranjeras do Sul (1973-74) where he organized the division of the parish into three new parishes before moving on to Nova Laranjeras (1974-78) and Verê (1978-80). In Nova Laranjeras he began working in the pastoral ministry to indigenous people since there were two indigenous tribes living in the parish territory. He described the years of this ministry as “the most beautiful experience of my missionary life”. He was also appointed delegate of the National CIMI (Missionary indigenous council). After a period as rector of the student community at Curitiba (1980-83), he returned to Laranjeras do Sul as parish priest (1983-85).
From 1981 until 1984 he was also the Vice-Regional. After another brief spell in Italy at Desio as missionary animator, in 1986 he was back in Brazil once again: he served as assistant priest at Nova Laranjeras (1986-88 and 1996-97), parish priest at Warta (1987-96), and assistant at Laranjeras do Sul (1997-2000).
His health had been deteriorating for some time and he was sent to the seminary of Londrina (2000-2005) where he continued to joyfully carry out whatever ministry his health allowed him to do. From June 2005 he was in nursing care in Parma.
The life of Fr. Sozzi can be summed up in a phrase that he wrote in 1958 to his Novice Master after his ordination: “I have only one desire: to do a great deal of good. I am very happy to be leaving once again because there is a great deal of good to be done in Brazil”.
May the Lord welcome this enthusiastic, active and faithful servant into his Kingdom. May he rest in peace.
