Il 7 maggio 2017, sul mezzogiorno, a Parma, dopo lunga malattia è morto P. Luigi Stevanin. Aveva 84 anni compiuti. Era nato a San Bonifacio (Verona – Italia) il 12 ottobre 1932.
Luigi fu una persona buona, semplice, disponibile e, soprattutto, calma e imperturbabile. Al punto che i compagni di classe lo chiamavano: “Gigi del giaso (ghiaccio)”. Proprio nel tempo dell’uomo competitivo, protagonista e aggressivo, Gigi del Giaso fu l’uomo della compassione, della misericordia, rispettoso della libertà degli altri, sempre attento ai deboli.
Entrò tra i Saveriani all'Istituto di Vicenza il 25 ottobre 1943. Accompagnato dalla stima e dalla riconoscenza del parroco: “Non ho che a congratularmi per il contegno e tutti i servizi che ha dato a me e alla parrocchia” (Vacanze 1949). Sicuro che non gli sarebbe mai mancato “l’aiuto di Gesù e di Maria per poter seguire sempre meglio questa via che Essi mi hanno indicato fin dalla mia fanciullezza” (14.6.53).
Frequentò la prima e seconda ginnasio a Sovizzo dove la comunità di Vicenza era sfollata a causa della guerra. Per i restanti tre anni di ginnasio P. Luigi e la sua classe furono a Grumone.
Nel 1949 fu ammesso al Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, dove il 12.9.1950 fece la Prima Professione: “Buono, modesto e mite –si legge nelle note di amissione - È benvoluto dai compagni … è un buon cerimoniere ed è molto diligente nei suoi uffici” (15.8.50). Passò quindi a Desio per i tre anni di Liceo (’50-’53). Fece il Prefetto ad Ancona (’53-’54). Fece la Teologia a Piacenza (’54-’58) dove fu ordinato Presbitero il 22 marzo 1958.
Dal 1958 al 1969 prestò il suo sevizio in Italia, soprattutto nell’animazione vocazionale, nelle comunità di Ancona, Massa Lucana e Salerno. Nel 1969 fu destinato al Congo Repubblica Democratica. Contentissimo, scrisse al Prefetto delle Missioni: ”Rispondo con un po’ di ritardo alla più bella lettera che abbia mai ricevuto fin qui […]. Qui grandi impegni non ce ne sono e quindi tutto potrebbe funzionare bene … o forse anche meglio, senza la mia presenza” (21.12.58).
Raggiunse il Congo nel 1970. Lavorò sempre nella pastorale: a Mwenga (‘70-‘78), Kavimvira (’79-’83), Luvungi (‘83-’86), Kavimvira (’86-’92), Bukavu Cahi (’93-’96), Bukavu Kadutu e (’97-2011). Si trattava di accompagnare e sostenere i diversi gruppi in cui erano articolate le comunità parrocchiali “catecumeni con i catechisti, gruppi dei giovani, dei ragazzi, delle mamme cristiane, della Legio. Con i loro… alti e bassi” (30.10.85). Senza dimenticare i numerosi safari. E anche le difficoltà dei vari cambi: “Forse sai anche tu - scriveva al Superiore 14.11.83 - che lasciare un posto dove si era conosciuti e dove si era cominciato un certo lavoro, per cominciare tutto da capo, non è sempre molto facile”.
Nella sua pastorale un’attenzione speciale era riservata agli ammalati e agli anziani: le prime visite erano sempre per loro. Un’altra categoria particolarmente seguita, i carcerati. P. Lo Stocco ricorda con ammirazione l’attività di P. Luigi e della Missionaria Saveriana Noemi in favore dei carcerati di Uvira e soprattutto della Prison Centrale di Bukavu: “Quello che queste due persone ‘eccezionali’ hanno saputo riversare con la loro fede e con il loro amore ai detenuti delle due carceri è una storia grande e piena dei sentimenti più belli che il mondo possa pensare e sognare e che solo chi sa credere e amare è capace di compiere” (9.5.17).
Luigi dal’97 all’11 fu il cappellano della ‘Prison Centrale’. “Costruita per un massimo di 300 inquilini, abbiamo superato i 1200 e ci si domanda: “Dov’è il rispetto della persona umana?”. Le autorità risolvono dicendo che stanno studiando la situazione…”. (17.10.’10). E così è anche la situazione del paese. Ma senza perdere la speranza, “Con un po’ di ritardo sono arrivate anche le piogge e così i fagioli possono crescere per far tacere la fame" (6.11.2000).
“Dando uno sguardo a ritroso degli anni passati, ringrazio di tutto cuore prima di tutti Lui e poi anche coloro che mi hanno aiutato a camminare con Lui. Qui siamo ancora tra tante spine ma le rose certamente fioriranno perché il Signore non può lasciare tanta gente in situazioni così inumane e per tanto tempo” (26.10.2000).
Nel 2011 rientrò definitivamente in Italia. Visse a Parma (’11-’14), Vicenza (’14) e Parma (’15-’17).

Fr. Luigi Stevanin died in Parma, on 7 May 2017, after a long illness. Born in San Bonifacio (Verona, Italy), on 12 October 1932, he was 84 years old.
Fr. Luigi was a good, simple and available person; above all, he was always calm and imperturbable. He was compassionate and merciful, he respected the freedom of others and was always attentive to the weak.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on 25 October 1943, accompanied by the esteem and gratitude of his parish priest: “I congratulate him on his behavior and I am grateful for all the help he gave to me and the parish” (Vacations, 1949). Luigi was always sure that he would never be without “the help of Jesus and Mary in following more and more the path they pointed out to me since my childhood” (14.6.53).
He attended the first and second years of high school in Sovizzo where the Vicenza community had been evacuated because of the war. Fr. Luigi and his classmates attended the three remaining years of high school in Grumone.
In 1949 he was admitted to Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he made his First Profession on 12 September 1950. On that occasion, his superiors wrote: “He is good, modest and meek, well-liked by his companions … he is a good master of ceremonies and is carries out his tasks with great diligence” (15.8.50). He then moved to Desio for three years of Lyceum (1950-53). He served as Prefect in Ancona (1953-54) and studied Theology in Piacenza (1954-58), where he was ordained priest on 22 March 1958.
From 1958 until 1969 he worked in Italy, especially in Vocation Animation, in the communities of Ancona, Massa Lucana and Salerno. In 1969 he was assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He expressed his great happiness in a letter to the Prefect of the Missions: ”I am replying with some delay to the most beautiful letter I have ever received so far […]. Here there are no great tasks and, therefore, everything could work quite well, or even better, without my presence” (21.12.58).
He arrived in the Congo in 1970 and always worked in the pastoral ministry: Mwenga (1970-78), Kavimvira (1979-83), Luvungi (1983-86), Kavimvira (1986-92), Bukavu Cahi (1993-96), Bukavu Kadutu and (1997-2011). He accompanied and supported the various groups of the parish communities: “catechumens with the catechists, groups of young people, children, Christian mothers, the Legion of Mary. There were high and low moments with them” (30.10.85). Without forgetting the numerous safaris and the difficulties caused by various changes, as he pointed out in a letter to the Superior General on 14 November 1983: “Perhaps you also know that it is not always easy to leave a familiar place after beginning a certain work and start all over again”.
In his pastoral work he showed special attention to the sick and the elderly: the first visits were always for them. He also took special pastoral care of prisoners. Fr. Lo Stocco remembers with admiration how Fr. Luigi and the Xaverian Sister, Noemi, worked on behalf of inmates in Uvira, especially at the ‘Prison Centrale’ in Bukavu: “What these two ‘exceptional’ people, inspired by their faith and love, managed to do for the inmates of these two prisons is something that can only be done by those who truly believe and love” (9.5.17).
Fr. Luigi was chaplain of the ‘Prison Centrale’ from 1997 until 2011. “Built for a maximum number of 300 inmates, it held more than 1200 and we ask ourselves: “Where is the respect for the human person?”. The authorities say they are studying the situation …”. (17.10.’10). And the same could be said about the situation of the country in general. But he never lost hope, “The rains have arrived a little late, but the beans will grow and satisfy people’s hunger" (6.11.2000).
“Looking back at the past years, I first of all thank the Lord wholeheartedly and then all those who helped me to walk with Him. We are still living among the thorns, but the roses will surely blossom because the Lord cannot leave so many people in such inhuman situations for long” (26.10.2000).
In 2011 he returned definitively to Italy and lived in Parma (2011-14), Vicenza (2014) and Parma (2015-17).

Le 7 mai 2017, autour de midi, à Parme, est mort le P. Luigi Stevanin après une longue maladie. Il avait 84 ans, né à San Bonifacio (Vérone – Italie) le 12 octobre 1932.
P. Luigi fut une bonne personne, simple, disponible et surtout, calme et imperturbable. A tel point que ses compagnons de classe l’appelait : « Gigi del giaso » (ghiaccio/glace) ». Tout en étant un homme compétitif, protagoniste et agressif, Gigi fut un homme de compassion, de miséricorde, au grand respect de la liberté des autres et toujours attentif vis-à-vis des faibles.
Il entre chez les xavériens à l’Institut de Vicenza le 25 octobre 1943, accompagné de l’estime et de la reconnaissance de son curé : « Mes mots ne peuvent qu’être de félicitations pour la conduite et les services qu’il a rendu en paroisse » (vacances 1949). Je suis confiant que « l’aide de Jésus et de Marie ne me maquera jamais pour aller de l’avant sur ce chemin qu’ils m’ont indiqué depuis ma tendre enfance » (14.06.53).
Il fait le CO à Sovizzo où la communauté de Vicenza s’était réfugiée suite à la guerre. Les trois années suivantes il les passe à Grumone.
En 1949, il est admis au Noviciat à S. Pietro in Vincoli, où il fait sa première profession le 12.09.1950 : « Bon, modeste et doux – peut-on lire dans la note de son admission – il est apprécié par ses compagnons… il est un bon cérémoniaire et assez diligent dans ses offices » (15.08.50). A Desio, il fera le deuxième cycle secondaire (50-53). Stage à Ancona (53-54). Théologie à Piacenza (54-58) et y est ordonné prêtre le 22 mars 1958.
De 1958 à 1969 il exerce son ministère en Italie, plus dans l’Animation Vocationnelle dans les communautés de Ancona, Massa Lucana et Salerno. En 1969, il est destiné en R.D.Congo. Rempli de joie, il écrit au chargé des Missions : « Je vous réponds avec retard à la plus belle lettre que j’ai reçu jusqu’à présent… Il n’y a pas ici des engagements exigeants et tout pourra fonctionner bien, même mieux je crois, sans ma présence » (21.12.58).
Il arrive au Congo en 1970. Il a toujours travaillé dans la pastorale : à Mwenga (70-78), Kavimvira (79-83), Luvungi (83-86), Kavimvira (86-92), Bukavu Cahi (93-96), Bukavu Kadutu (97-2011). Il est question d’accompagner et soutenir devers groupes des communautés paroissiales, catéchumènes, jeunes, mamans chrétiennes, légionnaires,… dans les hauts et les bas » (30.10.85) Sans oublier les nombreux « safari » (visites pastorales). Et aussi les difficultés liées aux devers changements : Tu dois savoir que, écrit-il au supérieur le 14.11.83, laisser un endroit où l’on est déjà connu et où l’on a commencé un certain travail, pour recommencer tout dès le début, n’est jamais facile ».
Dans sa pastorale, il avait une particulière attention envers les malades et les vieux : c’était les premières personnes qu’il visitait. Une autre catégorie particulièrement accompagnée c’était les prisonniers. Le Père Lo Stocco se souvient avec admiration de l’activité de Luigi et de la Missionnaire Xavérienne Noemi en faveur des prisonniers d’Uvira et surtout de la Prison Centrale de Bukavu : « Ce que ces deux personnes « exceptionnelles » ont su bouger avec leur foi et leur amour pour les détenus est une grande histoire pleine de sentiments les meilleurs qu’on peut penser et envisager et seul celui qui croit et aime peut être à mesure de comprendre » (9.5.2017).
De 97 à 2011, le Père Luigi a été aumônier de la « Prison Centrale ». «Construite pour une capacité de 300 personnes, nous sommes arrivés au-delà de 1200 et on se demande : où est le respect de la personne humaine ? ». Les autorités ne font que dire qu’ils sont en train d’étudier la situation… » (17.10.2010). Telle est aussi la situation du pays. Mais sans perdre l’espérance, « avec un peu de retard sont arrivées les pluies et les haricots peuvent pousser pour faire face à la faim (6.11.2000).
En faisant un regard sur les années passées, je remercie de tout mon coeur, tout d’abord Lui et puis tous ceux qui m’ont aidé à marcher avec Lui. Ici nous sommes encore parmi tant d’épines mais les roses fleuriront certainement car le Seigneur ne peut pas laisser tant de monde dans des situations inhumaines et pour longtemps » (26.10.2000).
En 2011, il rentre définitivement en Italie. Il vit à Parme (2011-2014), Vicenza (2014) et Parme (2015-2017).
