P. Olivio Stragliati

Il 15.3.2005, alle ore 20.00 in Casa Madre è morto il P. Olivio Stragliati. A fine febbraio era stato ricoverato nella clinica Città di Parma. Il sabato 12 marzo era stato riportato a casa perché la situazione stava precipitando.
Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Generezzo di Padri di Bettola (Piacenza) il 2.12.1922.
P. Olivio, dalle elementari fino alla fine della seconda liceo, fu allievo dei Sacerdoti Oblati di Cristo Re a Sestri Levante (Genova). Nel 1940 si accese in lui l’idea di farsi missionario e, dopo un anno di discernimento, il suo Superiore, P. Enrico Mauri, lo indirizzò all’Istituto di Mons. Conforti “con il quale [egli aveva avuto] tanta cara consuetudine” (30.10.41).
Entrò tra i Saveriani a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato e il 3.12.1942 emise la Prima Professione. Continuò quindi l’iter formativo, movimentato e fortunoso a causa della seconda guerra mondiale: a Castel Sidoli (Piacenza) e S. Pietro in Vincoli (43-44) per l’ultimo anno di liceo; a Parma e poi a Capriglio e di nuovo a Parma (44-48) per la teologia. Fu ordinato presbitero nella cattedrale di Parma il 7.3.48.
I tratti della sua personalità così sono delineati dal suo Rettore nella presentazione alla Professione Perpetua: «Carattere che esternamente si manifesta poco, forse per timidità o per tendenza all’interiorità… ha una santa mamma, la cui sola vicinanza impressiona per la semplicità, apertura e candore. Vita interiore buona; volontà di riuscita buona. Salute non troppo buona, ma non delicato. Disposto a tutto. Intelligenza buona. (4.10.45).
Dopo l’ordinazione gli furono affidati compiti vari in Italia: prefetto a Piacenza, insegnante a Zelarino, aiuto economo a Desio. Nel 1950 ebbe la destinazione alla missione: «Ringrazio il Signore, la Vergine SS.ma e Lei, Reverendissimo Padre, per la grandissima grazia accordatami. Con somma gioia e con grande confusione ho appreso la decisione del Consiglio» (23.9.50).
Nel 1951 raggiunse Glasgow per lo studio dell’Inglese e due anni dopo era in Sierra Leone. Lavorò a Port Loko (53-55), a Kabala (55-62), e a Lungi (62-63). Furono anni da pionieri della missione, contrassegnati da apertura e direzione di scuole, catechismo e primo annuncio, trascurando a volte la propria sistemazione. Proprio a P. Olivio il Superiore Generale dell’epoca scriveva: «Spero che il prossimo anno, oltre che alle scuole, penserete anche alla vostra casa, mi pare sia ora… le scuole sono una bellissima cosa ma sono un mezzo, se insieme a esse poteste curare anche le due tribù dei Limba e Kuranko, Deo gratias» (12.1.58).
Nel 1965 fu richiamato in Italia per l’insegnamento dell’Inglese, ma due anni più tardi scriveva al Superiore Generale: «Ho compreso che il mio posto è nelle terre di missione. Qui trovo difficoltà ad adattarmi» (23.10.67). Fu destinato al Brasile Sud e, dopo un anno di studio della lingua e di inculturazione, fu assegnato alla comunità del Seminario Saveriano di Jaguapità (69-75), per l’insegnamento, il ministero e anche per l’economia. Dal ‘75 al ‘95 lavorò esclusivamente nella pastorale a Miraselva (75-79), Piraju e Tejupa (81-82 e 86-88), Dionisio (82-83), Lupianopolis (83-86), Londrina-Vila Casoni (89-91), Curitiba-Vista Alegre (91-95). Sempre con grande sensibilità «ai tanti bisogni della gente che trova nel missionario la persona che cerca di risolvere i loro casi» (Miss. Sav. ott. 1990), curando particolarmente la predicazione e la celebrazione dell’Eucaristia e del Sacramento della Riconciliazione.
Nel 1995 rientrò definitivamente in Italia per motivi di salute. Fece parte della comunità di Taranto (97-02) dove, nonostante fosse un po’malconcio «si rendeva disponibile quando qualcuno gli chiedeva dei favori, per non parlare delle sue belle confessioni compiute con serietà, pazienza e profonda spiritualità» (Ada, 6.4.2005). Dal 2002 viveva in Casa Madre, in cura.

Fr. Olivio Stragliati died at the Mother House in the early evening of March 15 2005. At the end of February he had been admitted to the “Città di Parma” hospital. On Saturday Mar. 12, after his condition worsened with no hope of recovery, he was taken back home to the Mother House.
Born in Generezzo di Padri di Bettola (Piacenza, Italy) on Dec. 2 1922, Fr. Olivio was 82 years old.
From primary school until the end of the second year of liceo, Fr. Olivio was a student of the Oblates of Christ the King at Sestri Levante (Genoa). In 1940 he felt the desire to become a missionary and, after a year of discernment, his Superior Fr. Enrico Mauri, sent him to the Institute of Bishop Conforti “with whom he had had good contacts” (Oct. 30 1941).
He joined the Xaverians at S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate and made his First Profession on Dec. 3 1942. He then continued what would be quite an eventful formation program because of World War II: he studied at Castel Sidoli (Piacenza) and S. Pietro in Vincoli (1943-44) where he completed the final year of liceo; at Parma, then Capriglio, and once again at Parma (1944-48) for theology. He was ordained priest in the Cathedral of Parma on Mar. 7 1948.
In presenting him for Final Profession, his Rector thus described Fr. Olivio’s personality: “He is something of an introvert, perhaps as a result of a tendency to the interior life... he has a holy mother, whose simplicity, openness and candor makes an impression on everyone. He has a good spiritual life and the desire to succeed. His health is not very good, though it is not a cause for concern. He is willing and intelligent.” (Oct. 4 1945).
After ordination he was given a series of tasks in Italy: prefect at Piacenza, teacher at Zelarino, assistant administrator at Desio. He was assigned to the missions in 1950: “I thank the Lord, the Virgin Mary and you, Reverend Father, for the great grace bestowed upon me. I learned of the Council’s decision with great joy and bewilderment.” (Sept. 23 1950).
In 1951 he arrived in Glasgow (Scotland) to study English; two years later he was in Sierra Leone. He worked in Port Loko (1953-55), Kabala (1955-62), and Lungi (1962-63). Those were the years of the mission pioneers, foundation and direction of schools, catechism and first proclamation, sometimes even to the neglect of their own living circumstances. The Superior General of the time wrote to Fr. Olivio: “I hope that next year you will attend to your own house as well as to the school. I think it is time you did so... the schools are a wonderful thing, but they are a tool; if you could also take on the two tribes of Limba and Kuranko, Deo Gratias” (Jan. 12 1958).
In 1965 he was recalled to Italy to teach English, but two years later he wrote to the Superior General: “I have understood that my place is in the mission lands. I find it difficult to adjust here” (Oct. 23 1967). He was assigned to South Brazil and, after a year of language study and inculturation, he was appointed to the community of the Xaverian Seminary of Jaguapità (1969-75) for teaching, ministry and financial administration. From 1975 until 1995 he worked exclusively in pastoral activity in Miraselva (1975-79), Piraju and Tejupa (1981-82 and 1986-88), Dionisio (1982-83), Lupianopolis (1983-86), Londrina-Vila Casoni (1989-91), Curitiba-Vista Alegre (1991-95). He was always sensitive “to the many needs of the people who see the missionary as someone who tries to solve their problems” (“Missionari Saveriani” Oct. 1990). He took special care of preaching and the celebration of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
In 1995 he returned to Italy for the last time for health reasons. He was assigned to the community of Taranto (1997-2002) where, in spite of the fact that he was somewhat the worse for wear “he made himself available to anyone who asked for help, to say nothing of his confessions, which he heard earnestly, patiently and with a profound spirituality” (Ada, Apr. 6 2005). From 2002 until his death he was in nursing care at the Mother House. May he rest in peace.
