P. Giuseppe Zanchi

Il 15 febbraio 2014, a Parma intorno alle 11,30 è morto per collasso cardiocircolatorio, il P. Giuseppe Zanchi. Era in Casa Madre da un mese circa. Aveva 83 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Ranica (Bergamo – Italia) il 23.04.1930.
La storia della vocazione missionaria di P. Giuseppe è quella di un ragazzo che sogna la missione e a 13 anni si incammina decisamente per la strada che lo portò ai ministeri ordinati e a lavorare nella chiesa che è in Brasile. Entrò tra i Saveriani a Vicenza nel 1943. Ma poco dopo, a causa della guerra, raggiunse la comunità saveriana di Gandellino (BG) dove fece le tre medie (43-46). Passò quindi a Grumone per il ginnasio superiore. E sempre più determinato a diventare missionario: ”Nelle mie preghiere sempre ripeto al Signore che mi stia a fianco e infonda sempre più in me il suo amore e la sua grazia e non permetta che mi allontani da Lui, perché lontano da lui c’è la morte” (Esame vocazione, 15.12.47).
Nel 1948 fu ammesso al Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli dove il 12.9.1949 emise la Prima Professione Frequentò quindi il Liceo Saveriano di Desio (49-52). Più che positivo, alla fine del triennio liceale, il giudizio di presentazione alla Professione Perpetua: “Ottimo giovane, con tanto entusiasmo per la vocazione e le Missioni. Disciplinato e obbediente, diligente negli uffici affidatigli dai Superiori. Buon spirito di sacrificio. Carattere buono e facile alla vita comune” (16.6.52). Nell’anno scolastico 52-53 fece parte della comunità di Massa Lucana con il compito di Prefetto. Infine fece la Teologia a Piacenza e a Piacenza fu ordinato presbitero il 16.03.1957.
Dopo l’ordinazione i Superiori, rifacendosi alle indicazioni dei suoi formatori : “Dimostra molto zelo, gli piace lavorare tra i ragazzi e fa bene” (Ministeri ordinati, 9.10.56), mandarono il P. Giuseppe a Vicenza per l’animazione vocazionale, l’insegnamento e la formazione. Tre anni più tardi lo destinarono al Brasile: “Ringrazio - scriveva al P. Generale il 27.5.61 - per il bel dono che mi ha fatto di poter realizzare l’ideale della nostra vocazione missionaria”.
In Brasile operò soprattutto nella pastorale parrocchiale a Centenario do sul, Jaguapità e Cafeara. Contemporaneamente fu insegnante e aiuto economo nel Seminario saveriano di Jaguapità.
Dal ’65 al ’68 fu parroco di Tomè Açù in Amazzonia. Di questo periodo ci ha lasciato un simpatico ricordo della costruzione della chiesa: “Gli uomini facevano crescere i muri, i giovani portavano sabbia e cemento, le donne e le ragazze cucinavano pasta e fagioli. Per tutti. Tutti quanti ci nutrivamo dell’orgoglio di preparare la casa del Signore, tra le capanne della gente. Nella comunità cresceva il desiderio di poter un giorno, in quella chiesa, cantare al Signore e pregare per tutti” (Missionari Saveriani, nov 2002).
Ritornato in Brasile Sud fu parroco di S. Mariana, poi collaboratore pastorale nella parrocchia di S. Geltrude (71-77). Gli fu pure richiesto di fare il Procuratore di missione e l’economo locale a Larangejras do Sul. Dal ’77 all’80 guidò la parrocchia di S. Amaro (Londrina).
Concluse il suo servizio in Brasile a Curitiba (81-82): “oltre ad essere Rettore dei teologi – scriveva a un Consigliere generale il 16.3.81 - sono anche Economo in una sede in costruzione e Parroco di una parrocchia creata dal Vescovo appositamente per noi. Quindi senza strutture, abbastanza vasta e con varie cappelle da seguire. Prega per me perché possa avere sempre allegria da dare e giudizio per preparare questi futuri presbiteri".
Nel 1982, “dopo 21 anni di lavoro missionario nel grande Brasile - come scrisse su MS, feb 2007 - passando per varie parrocchie e comunità saveriane, sempre facendo il prete: quante celebrazioni eucaristiche, quante confessioni e comunioni, quanti battesimi e matrimoni, ritiri spirituali e visite ad ammalati, quante altre attività pastorali”, rientrò in Italia dove ricoprì diversi incarichi: Promotore vocazionale ad Alzano (82-87); Cappellano Casa di riposo ‘Cenacolo’ a Lentate sul Seveso (87-89); Rettore a Tavernerio (89-92); Rettore, ministero e Economo a Piacenza (92-05); Animatore missionario e vocazionale ad Alzano (05-13).
“P. Giuseppe - ha scritto di lui P. Giavarini su MS mag 2013 - una persona onesta, gentile e sincera, capace di dialogare con tutti. Sempre disponibile per le confessioni, sia in casa sia nelle parrocchie del vicariato. Accoglie con cordialità, dà informazioni, si intrattiene con gli ospiti. Ma prima di tutto è un uomo di Dio”.

Fr. Giuseppe Zanchi died in Parma on 15 February 2014. Born in Ranica (Bergamo – Italy), on 23 April 1930, he was 83 years old.
As a young boy, Fr. Giuseppe’s dream was to become a missionary and, at the age of 13, he resolutely took his first steps towards the priesthood and missionary work in Brazil. He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza in 1943. However, the war soon forced a move to the Xaverian community of Gandellino (BG), where he completed three years of junior high school (1943-46), before moving to Grumone for senior high school. He was always determined to become a missionary: ”I always ask the Lord to stay by my side and fill me more and more with his love and his grace, and never allow me to drift away from him because far from him there is only death” (15.12.47).
In 1948 he was admitted to the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he made his First Profession on 12 September 1949.
He continued his studies at Desio (1949-52) and received a positive report when the time came for Final Profession: “He is an excellent young man with a great enthusiasm for his vocation and the missions. He is disciplined and obedient, diligent in carrying out the tasks entrusted to him by the Superiors. He has a good spirit of sacrifice and a good temperament for living community life” (16.6.52). He served as prefect in the Massa Lucana community during the academic year 1952-53. He then studied Theology at Piacenza, where he was ordained priest on 16 March 1957.
After his ordination, the Superiors sent him to Vicenza to work as vocation animator, teacher and formator, in line with the report given by his formators : “He has shown great zeal; he likes to work with children and has shown that he does this work well”. Three years later, the Superiors assigned him to Brazil. In a letter to the Superior General, he wrote: “I thank you for the wonderful gift that allows me to fulfill the ideal of our missionary vocation” (27.5.61).
In Brazil he worked especially in the pastoral parish ministry at Centenario do sul, Jaguapità and Cafeara. At the same time he was also teacher and assistant treasurer in the Xaverian seminary of Jaguapità.
From 1965 until 1968 he served as parish priest of Tomè Açù in Amazzonia. He thus described the building of the church: “The men worked on putting up the building, the young people brought sand and cement and the women and young girls prepared pasta and beans for everyone. We were all proud of building the Lord’s house among the huts of the people. The community longed for the day when it could sing to the Lord and pray for all in that church” (Missionari Saveriani, Nov 2002).
Back in South Brazil he served as priest at St. Mariana, then as pastoral assistant in the parish of St. Gertrude (1971-77). He was also asked to work as mission Procurator and local treasurer at Larangejras do Sul. From 1977 until 1980 he guided the parish of St. Amaro (Londrina).
He ended his service in Brazil at Curitiba (1981-82). On 16 March 1981, he wrote to a General Councilor: “Besides being the Theology Rector, I am also the treasurer of a construction project and parish priest of a parish that the bishop set up specifically for us. It is a place without structures, it is quite vast and there are many chapels to attend to. Pray for me that I might always be cheerful and of sound judgment in order to train these future priests well”.
He returned to Italy in 1982, “after 21 years of missionary work in Brazil, in various parishes and Xaverian communities, always working as a priest: so many eucharistic celebrations, confessions and communions, baptisms and weddings, spiritual retreats and visits to the sick and many other pastoral activities” (Missionari Saveriani, February 2007). In Italy he was Vocation promoter in Alzano (1982-87), Chaplain in an old people’s home at Lentate sul Seveso (1987-89), Rector in Tavernerio (1989-92), Rector and treasurer at Piacenza (1992-2005) and Missionary-Vocation Animator at Alzano (2005- 13).
Fr. Giavarini in thus described him in the May 2013 issue of Missionari Saveriani: “Fr. Giuseppe is an honest, kind and sincere person, who is capable of dialogue with everyone. He is always available for confessions, both in the house and the local parishes. He welcomes people warmly, gives information and spends time with guests. But first and foremost he is a man of God”.
