P. Mario Guerra

Il 17 febbraio 2014, verso le 07.00, all’Ospedale di Parma è morto per fibrosi polmonare il P. Mario Guerra. Aveva 79 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Campagnola Emilia (Reggio Emilia - Italia) il 21.10.1934.
Allievo del Seminario di Guastalla, alla fine del primo anno di teologia inviò al Superiore Generale la richiesta di diventare saveriano: “Dopo molta riflessione e intensa preghiera ho deciso di cedere all’interno richiamo che da cinque anni sento per una vita di più completo servizio al Signore nelle Missioni. Avendo conosciuto bene il loro Istituto delle Missioni estere faccio formale domanda di esservi accolto. Questa domanda esprime implicitamente la ferma volontà da parte mia di servire il Signore in questo Istituto per tutta la mia vita, sottostando alle regole ed alla volontà dei superiori con lieta sottomissione” (8.7.57).
Una esperienza quella della chiamata che lo segnò profondamente: “Nei momenti più difficili – scriveva il 14.11.80 - mi sono sempre rifugiato nel ricordo vivo dell’esperienza travolgente della mia ‘chiamata’. Il ricordo di quell'esperienza ha sempre avuto un effetto miracoloso per ravvivare e rinvigorire lo spirito accasciato e confuso”.
Entrò all’Istituto il 30.9.57 a S. Pietro in Vincoli dove fece il Noviziato e, il 12.10.1958, emise la Prima Professione. Passò quindi a Parma per proseguire e concludere gli studi teologici. Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 16.10.1960.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato alla Sierra Leone. Raggiunse la missione nel ’63 dopo un biennio trascorso a Glasgow. Dal ’63 al ’69 fu viceparroco a Magburaka e dal ’72 all’81 parroco a Yele. P. Mario ci ha presentato un bilancio di quel periodo nella corrispondenza con P. Generale: “Devo fare i conti con i miei limiti psico- fisici. Ho finito la Teologia a fatica ed esausto. Mi sono ripreso nei due anni che sono seguiti in Scozia. Poi c’è stata la febbrile attività degli anni sessanta in Sierra Leone culminata con un esaurimento nel 1969...(saltavo da una costruzione all’altra, limitandomi all’essenziale, mura e tetto solidi, perché i bisogni premevano)... Mi sono ripreso nei 15 mesi trascorsi in una parrocchia in Inghilterra, con un prete Irlandese molto comprensivo e buono. Purtroppo non ho mai avuto una cura specifica adeguata perché io stesso non mi sono mai reso conto si trattasse di esaurimento. Solo mi sentivo irritabilissimo ed incapace di attività intellettuale” (14.11.80).
Dall’82 all’88 fece il periodo di avvicendamento nel Regno Unito prestando il suo servizio come economo a Coatbridge e poi come animatore a Londra. In questo periodo si avvicinò a gruppi carismatici, partecipando regolarmente ai loro incontri.
Dal 1988 al 2004 lavorò nuovamente in Sierra Leone: Parroco a Kamalu, negli anni della terribile guerra civile, con il rapimento delle sette Saveriane (1995) e il sequestro dello stesso P. Mario (novembre ’98 - gennaio ’99). Seguendo la tradizione Saveriana, privilegiò nella attività missionaria la erezione di scuole della missione in quanto assicuravano uno spazio quotidiano per l’annuncio del Vangelo. “Ho iniziato la gestione della parrocchia di Kamalu, mia ultima residenza missionaria in Sierra Leone, con 9 scuole elementari e l’ho lasciata con 50 scuole elementari e 10 mila scolaretti, più una scuola media” (2.8.10).
Nel 2004 rientrò in Italia per problemi di salute. Si prestò per il ministero a Gallico e a Desio. Dal 2011 era in cura a Parma.
“Non ho mai brillato nella comunicazione verbale - così nella lettera del 2.8.10 - perciò mi sono sempre concentrato nell’erigere strutture che parlassero per me. Le istituzioni educative cui ho messo mano le vedo come una continuazione della mia vita missionaria anche dopo che sarò morto. La voce che annunzierà il bel Vangelo in queste opere sarà la mia voce. Vorrei che la mia voce rimanesse in eterno in questo mondo a proclamare il bel Vangelo. Certo mi rendo conto che non tutto è stato perfetto, ma ho sempre amato onestamente la Grazia di Dio”.

Fr. Mario Guerra died in hospital in Parma, on 17 February. Born on 21 October 1934, at Campagnola Emilia (Reggio Emilia - Italy), he was 79 years old.
He was completing the first year of theology at the Seminary of Guastalla when he wrote to the Superior General, asking to join the Xaverians: “After much reflection and intense prayer, I have decided to surrender to the inner voice that has been calling me, for the past five years, to a life of more complete service to the Lord in the Missions. I now officially ask to be received among you. This application implicitly expresses my firm resolve to serve the Lord in the Institute for my entire life, in joyful submission to its rules and the will of the superiors” (8.7.57).
The experience of being called to be a missionary left a profound mark on him, as he wrote on 14 November 1980: “In times of difficulty, I have always sought refuge in the memory of the irresistible experience of my ‘call’. The memory of that experience has always had a miraculous effect in reviving and strengthening my discouraged and confused spirit”.
He joined the Institute on 30 September 1957 at S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he did Novitiate and made his First Profession on 12 October 1958. He then moved to Parma for the remainder of his studies and was ordained priest there on 16 October 1960.
After his ordination he was assigned to Sierra Leone and arrived there in 1963 after two years in Glasgow. From 1963 until 1969 he served as assistant priest at Magburaka and, from 1972 until 1981, as parish priest at Yele. Fr. Mario thus described his experience of those years in his correspondence with the Superior General: “I must come to terms with my psychological and physical limits. I struggled to complete my Theology studies and was exhausted at the end. I recovered during the two years I spent in Scotland. Then there was the feverish activity of the 1960s in Sierra Leone, which culminated with a breakdown in 1969…(I was intensely involved in a series of construction projects, limiting myself to the essential (solid walls and roofs) because of the pressing needs)… I recovered during the15 months I spent in a parish in England with an Irish priest, who was very kind and understanding. Unfortunately, I never had any specific treatment because I never fully understood that I had suffered a breakdown. I only felt very irritable and incapable of intellectual activity” (14.11.80).
From 1982 until 1988 he worked in the United Kingdom as treasurer in Coatbridge and animator in London. During this time he became involved in groups of the Charismatic Renewal and regularly took part in their meetings.
From 1988 until 2004 he was back in Sierra Leone, where he served as parish priest at Kamalu, during the years of the civil war. Seven Xaverian sisters were kidnapped in 1995, and the same fate befell Fr. Mario in the period November 1998 - January 1999. In line with the Xaverian tradition, he gave priority to building schools because they guaranteed a space where the First Proclamation of the Gospel could be done every day. “In the parish of Kamalu, my last missionary residence in Sierra Leone, I started off with 9 primary schools and, when I left, it had 50 primary schools and 10.000 pupils, plus one secondary school” (2.8.10).
He returned to Italy in 2004 on health grounds. He worked in the pastoral ministry at Gallico and Desio before moving to Parma in 2011 for nursing care.
In a letter dated 2 August 2010, he wrote: “I have never excelled as a speaker and, consequently, I have always concentrated on building structures to speak for me. I look upon the educational institutions I built as a continuation of my missionary life, even after I am dead. My voice will continue to proclaim the Gospel in these works. I am well aware that not everything was done perfectly, but I have always honestly loved the Grace of God”.
