I am Father Christophe Ndiwe Chiza, a Xaverian missionary, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I was ordained priest in September 20, 2020.

Easter celebration of this year in Sierra Leone was my first experience as missionary but also as a priest. To say it has been a chaotic or a wonderful celebration is an irony.

From a point of view, the whole world seems to have changed from so many perspectives of life and our religious practices and celebrations are ritually the same but not similar. Instead of running from making a comparison of Easter celebrations in DRCongo, Cameroon, in the Philippines where I have been living for a couple of years, I took my time to reflect upon Easter celebration in Sierra Leone. In doing so, I discovered something which I would like to share with you.

From my background experience of Easter celebrations in other countries, I was expecting to be in front of a very huge crowd of people. But during the Holy week celebrations the church was half empty. However, the small group was very committed and involved actively in all of our celebrations. On Palm Sunday, which recounts Jesus’s triumphal entrance into the city of Jerusalem, we had a very nice parade and while processing people sung together with joy by waving their palms. Even though Good Friday is a public holiday in Sierra Leone, there was not a good number of people. The government lifted the social measures about corona virus pandemic; however, Easter Vigil and Sunday mass were celebrated in a simple way as an ordinary Sunday.  People were not so excited but they had some inner joy expressed by a simple word “Happy Easter”. We have to bear in mind that Sierra Leone which is located in the western part of Africa is dominated by Muslims.  Christians are a minority and my impression is that their living faith seems to be characterised by a double belonging, meaning that a catholic can attend a celebration to a “Born again” or “Pentecostal” Church. In spite of everything, it has been for me a great joy and a good experience to celebrate for the first time Easter as a priest. Father Eric shares the same experience as newly ordained Xaverian priest coming from Indonesia and living in Sierra Leone. May almighty God bless you all and let us pray for one another.

Pengalaman pertama kali saya merayakan perayaan paskah

Saya, Pastor Christophe Ndiwe Chiza SX, berasal dari DR Kongo dan ditabiskan sebagai imam misionaris pada tanggal 20 September 2020.

Dalam tulisan ini, saya menceritakan pengalaman pertama kali saya merayakan perayaan paskah di Sierra Leon tempat di mana saya bermisi sekarang. Ada hal yang ‘membingungkan’ dan ‘menarik’ dalam merayakan Pekan Suci Paskah. Berpijak pada perubahan pandangan dunia tentang hidup itu sendiri, praktek-praktek atau perayaan-perayaan keagamaan dalam satu agama bisa saja sama dalam hal ritual tetapi tidak identik dalam hal pelaksanaan. Tidak bermaksud untuk membandingkan perayaan Paskah yang pernah saya hadiri di tiga negara (DR Konggo, Kamerun, dan Manila) dengan Sierra Leon, saya memilih untuk melihat dan merefleksikan perayaan Paskah di tempat misi saya ini. Dalam permerunagan saya tentang perayaan tersebut di sini, saya menemukan sesuatu untuk diceritakan kepada anda sekalian. 

Sebelum perayaan Pekan suci, saya mengharapkan agar banyak umat, layaknya di tiga negara di atas, menghadiri perayaan tersebut. Akan tetapi selama Pekan Suci, banyak orang yang tidak datang ke gereja. Meskipun demikian, ada sekolompok umat yang sangat berkomitment dan terlibat secara aktif-partisipatif dalam pekan suci. Pada Minggu Palma, kami mengadakan perarakan yang sangat bagus karena semua umat bernyanyi dengan gembiraa sambil melambaikan daun palma mereka. Sedangkan pada perayaan Jum’at Agung, meskipun hari itu adalah hari libur nasional, kehadiran umat tidak banyak. Hal ini dirasakan juga pada Sabtu Suci dan Minggu Paskah di mana perayaannya dilakukan secara sederhana seperti hari minggu biasanya; meskipun pemerintah sudah tidak lagi memberlakukan pembatasan akibat Corona. Akan tetapi, hal ini tidak mengurangi rasa gembira dari semua umat untuk mengekspresikan ‘inner joy’ mereka dalam sapaan dan ucapan “ Selamat Paskah”. Kita perlu tahu bahwa Sierra Leon adalah negara yang mayoritas agamanya Islam. Orang-orang Katolik di sini sepertinya mempunyai “double belonging” dalam hal mengahadiri perayaan iman. Mereka bisa saja menghadiri perayaan di gereja-gereja “Born Again” atau pentekostal. Terlepas dari semua hal di atas, saya sangat bahagia karena pertama kali saya merayakan perayaan Pekan Suci sebagai seorang imam missionaris. Pasqua: la mia prima esperienza come missionario e come sacerdote

Sono padre Christophe Ndiwe Chiza, un missionario saveriano originario della Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Sono stato ordinato sacerdote il 20 settembre 2020.

La celebrazione Pasquale di quest’anno in Sierra Leone è stata la mia prima esperienza come missionario e come sacerdote. Dire che è stata una celebrazione caotica o meravigliosa può sembrare ironico. Da un certo punto di vista, il mondo intero sembra essere cambiato in molti aspetti di vita, e anche le nostre pratiche religiose e le celebrazioni, che sono ritualmente le stesse, non sono però uguali. Invece di precipitarmi a fare dei paragoni con le celebrazioni Pasquali nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo, in Cameroon, o nelle Filippine, dove ho vissuto per un paio di anni, mi sono preso del tempo per riflettere sulla celebrazione della Pasqua in Sierra Leone. Così facendo, ho scoperto qualcosa che vorrei condividere con voi.

L’esperienza di celebrazioni Pasquali già fatte in altri paesi, mi induceva a pensare che mi sarei trovato di fronte ad una grande folla di gente. Invece, durante le celebrazioni della Settimana Santa, la chiesa era per metà vuota. Comunque, quel gruppetto era molto impegnato e partecipava attivamente a tutte le celebrazioni. Nella Domenica delle Palme, che narra l’ingresso trionfale di Gesù nella città di Gerusalemme, abbiamo fatto una bella processione durante la quale la gente ha cantato insieme con gioia e agitando le palme. Sebbene in Sierra Leone il Venerdì Santo sia una festa civile, non c’è stato un buon numero di persone. Il governo aveva tolto le misure restrittive per contenere la pandemia di Corona Virus, e tuttavia le messe della Vigilia Pasquale e della Domenica di Risurrezione sono state celebrate in modo semplice, come nelle domeniche ordinarie. La gente non era particolarmente eccitata, ma la gioia interiore si esprimeva attraverso il semplice augurio “Buona Pasqua.” Dobbiamo tener presente che la Sierra Leone, che si trova nella parte occidentale dell’Africa, è per maggioranza mussulmana. I Cristiani sono una minoranza e la mia impressione è che essi vivano la loro fede con un doppio senso di appartenenza, che cioè un cattolico possa partecipare anche ad una celebrazione delle chiese dei  “Born Again” (i rinati) o dei “Pentecostali”. Malgrado tutto, celebrare la mia prima Pasqua da sacerdote è stata per me una grande gioia ed una buona esperienza. Anche padre Eric, sacerdote novello che viene dall’Indonesia e che ora vive in Sierra Leone, condivide la stessa esperienza. Possa Dio Onnipotente benedire tutti voi.
