P. Giuseppe Bagnara

Il 17 luglio 2014, all’Ospedale S. Carlo di Jakarta alle 19.15, ora locale, si è spento il P. Giuseppe Bagnara. Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Zermeghedo (Vicenza-Italia) il 19 gennaio 1932.
“La mia vocazione missionaria spuntò e crebbe a poco a poco – scrisse nell’Esame della vocazione – La vaga idea di diventare missionario, apparsa durante le medie alla Scuola Media Governativa di Vicenza, divenne alla fine della terza, anche per la lettura di Voci d’oltre mare e di Nigrizia, una decisione.
Ne parlai con il Parroco che informò P. Nardello. In una quindicina di giorni preparai l’occorrente e il 25.10.48 partii per Grumone. Nella Scuola Apostolica ... le meditazioni, le preghiere, le prediche, l’ambiente missionario svilupparono moltissimo in me l’ideale missionario” (Zelarino, 8.4.50).
Nel 1951 fu ammesso al Noviziato e il 12.9.52, a S. Pietro in Vincoli, emise la Prima Professione.
Frequentò i tre anni di Liceo a Desio. Nell’anno scolastico 55-56 fu Prefetto nella Scuola Apostolica di Udine. Fece la Teologia a Piacenza (56-58) e a Parma (58-60). Fu ordinato presbitero il 25.10.1959. Sempre riscotendo la stima dei formatori che lo riconoscevano: “Serio e coscienzioso che assume impegni ed esegue con molto senso di responsabilità. Infermiere encomiabile e di squisita carità. Nel caso sa imporsi e comandare. Pietà buona, intelligenza sufficiente e buona applicazione” (Ammissione alla Professione Perpetua).
Alla fine della teologia fu destinato all’Indonesia dove giunse nel febbraio del ’61 e dove lavorò per tutta la sua vita: 24 anni alle Mentawai e 28 a Jakarta.
Alle Mentawai fu viceparroco a Sipora (62-65), poi Parroco a Siberut (65-68; 80-86), ma soprattutto fu il fondatore della comunità cristiana di Sikabaluan (69-80).
“Laggiù, nella foresta equatoriale non c’era ancora niente. Ho cominciato in una capanna come le loro, con pareti di corteccia d’albero e tetto di foglie e ho iniziato a costruirmi una barca, come loro, per poter raggiungere i villaggi dell’isola” (Intervista raccolta da P. Matteo Rebecchi il 19.11.2007). Fin dall’inizio P. Giuseppe orientò la sua attività all’annuncio della Parola di Dio e al miglioramento del livello di vita della gente nell’ambito della salute, dell’istruzione e della tecnica. Con equilibrio, con gradualità, rispondendo sempre a reali esigenze della gente.
“Andavo nei villaggi e la prima cosa che facevo era quella di curare i malati. Portavo medicine e facevo... quello che potevo” (Intervista 2007). Ma la richiesta più insistente era quella che il Padre aprisse la scuola. Dopo pochi anni tutti i villaggi avevano la loro scuoletta con il maestro che insegnava a leggere e scrivere. Successivamente nei villaggi dove il governo aveva costruito le medie, vennero aperti gli ‘internati’ per consentire di proseguire gli studi a chi lo avesse desiderato.
“Nei primi cinque anni – scriveva in Missionari Saveriani maggio 87- attraverso la scuola siamo entrati in tanti villaggi. Non ho mai fatto un giro per cercare cristiani. Sono sempre venuti da soli e numerosi ... Le comunità erano affidate ai laici, il Baja Gereja (l’anziano della chiesa), coadiuvato dagli incaricati della liturgia, canto, catechismo, eventuali costruzioni. Periodicamente laici ‘specializzati’ realizzavano corsi di formazione”. “P. Giuseppe, coadiuvato da un gruppo di Mentawaiani, ha pure curato la prima traduzione del Nuovo Testamento in lingua mentawaiana” (Osservatore Romano 29.11.68).
Nel 1986 lasciò le Mentawai e svolse il suo servizio pastorale nelle parrocchie Stella Maris e S. Maria di Fatima di Jakarta. Fino al 2010. Sempre con il suo stile di presenza fraterna, valorizzando i laici, con un’attenzione particolare ai meno fortunati della zona e collaborando all’istruzione dei giovani con numerose borse di studio. Dal 2010 fu confessore nella comunità della filosofia.
Nell’Intervista 2007 P. Giuseppe ricorda che nel primo viaggio esplorativo della zona di Sikabaluan il mentawaiano che lo accompagnava lo aveva presentato così alla gente di Lubaga, il primo villaggio visitato: “Questo non è un ‘sasareu’ (straniero). È un ‘sasaraina’ (fratello)".
Essere fratello di tutti è stato il programma della sua vita.

Fr. Giuseppe Bagnara died on 17 July 2014, at the St. Charles Hospital, in Jakarta (Indonesia). Born in Zermeghedo (Vicenza, Italy), on 19 January 1932, he was 82 years old.
“My missionary vocation emerged and developed slowly. The vague idea of becoming a missionary, which came to me during my junior high school years in Vicenza, finally became a firm decision thanks to my reading magazines such as Voci d’oltre mare and Nigrizia. I spoke about the matter with the parish priest, who informed Fr. Nardello. I made all the necessary preparations over 15 days and left for Grumone on 25 October 1948. The meditations, prayers, homilies and the missionary atmosphere in the seminary made my missionary ideal even stronger” (Zelarino, 8.4.50).
He was admitted to Novitiate in 1951 and made his First Profession at S. Pietro in Vincoli on 12 September 1952.
He attended three years of Lyceum studies in Desio. During the academic year 1955-56 he served as Prefect at the minor seminary of Udine. He studied Theology in Piacenza (1956-58) and Parma (1958-60). He was ordained priest on 25 October 1959. He gained the respect of his formators, who thus described him: “He is a serious and meticulous young man who carries out his tasks with a great sense of responsibility. He worked very well and with great charity as infirmarian. Whenever necessary, he is capable of taking charge and giving orders. He has good piety, a sufficient degree of intelligence and good commitment” (Admission to Final Profession).
After his theology studies, he was assigned to Indonesia. He arrived in February 1961 and worked there for his entire life: he spent 24 years on the Mentawai islands and 28 years in Jakarta.
On the Mentawai islands he served as assistant priest in Sipora (1962- 65), then as parish priest in Siberut (1965-68; 1980-86); above all, he founded the Christian community of Sikabaluan (1969-80).
“When I arrived down there, in the equatorial forest, I had to begin from scratch. I lived in a hut like the people; the walls were made of tree bark and the roof was made of leaves. I built a boat like those used by the locals so that I could travel to the villages of the island” (Interview with Fr. Matteo Rebecchi, 19.11.2007).
From the very beginning, Fr. Giuseppe based his work on the proclamation of the Word of God and the improvement of the people’s standard of living, especially in the areas of health, instruction and technical abilities. He did everything in a balanced and gradual manner, always responding to the real needs of the people.
“My first task in the villages was to tend to the sick. I took medicines to them and did whatever I could to help them” (Interview 2007).
Yet the most pressing request was that Father open a school. A few years later, all the villages had their own small school with a teacher who taught them to read and write. Thereafter, in the places where the government had built secondary schools, ‘residential schools’ were opened to enable anyone who wanted to continue their studies.
In May 1987, Fr. Giuseppe wrote in an article for Missionari Saveriani: “The schools gave us access to many villages. I never had to go and look for Christians; the people always came to us and in great numbers ... The communities were entrusted to lay people, the Baja Gereja (the elders of the church), with the help of those in charge of the liturgy, singing, catechism and any building projects. Periodically, ‘specialized’ lay people offered courses of formation”. “Fr. Giuseppe, with the help of a group of Mentawai people, also did the first translation of the New Testament in the Mentawai language” (Osservatore Romano 29.11.68).
Fr. Giuseppe left the Mentawai in 1986 and worked in pastoral ministry in the parishes Stella Maris and Our Lady of Fatima, in Jakarta, until 2010. He stood out for his fraternal presence, appreciation of the laity, showing special attention to the less fortunate, and he helped many young people with scholarships. From 2010 he served as confessor in the Philosophy community.
In the 2007 Interview, Fr. Giuseppe recalled the first exploratory journey in the area of Sikabaluan. The Mentawaian who accompanied him presented him to the people of Lubaga, the first village they visited: “He is not a ‘sasareu’ (foreigner). He is a ‘sasaraina’ (brother)."
To be the brother of all was his life project. May he rest in peace.

Le 17 Juillet 2014, à l'Hôpital Saint Charles de Jakarta à 19h15, heure locale, est mort P. Giuseppe Bagnara. Il avait 82 ans, étant né à Zermeghedo (Vicenza - Italie) le 19 Janvier 1932.
«Ma vocation missionnaire a germé et a grandi progressivement - a écrit dans l'Enquête de la vocation - la vague idée de devenir missionnaire, apparu durant l’Ecole moyenne gouvernementale de Vicenza, qui est devenu à la fin de la troisième année, également grâce à la lecture de Voix d’outre-mer et Négritude (Nigrizia), une décision.
J’en ai parlé à mon curé qui a informé le P. Nardello. Dans quinze jours j’ai préparé le nécessaire et je suis parti le 25/10/1948 à Grumone. Dans l'école apostolique ... méditations, prières, sermons, l'environnement missionnaire ont développé beaucoup en moi l'idéal missionnaire " (Zelarino, 08/04/50).
En 1951, il a été admis au noviciat et le 12/09/52, à San Pietro in Vincoli, a fait sa première profession.
Il a fréquenté pendant trois ans le lycée de Desio. Dans l'année scolaire 1955-1956 il a été préfet à l'École apostolique d’Udine. Il a fait la théologie à Piacenza (1956-1958) et à Parme (1958-1960). Il a été ordonné prêtre le 25.10.1959. Toujours il récupérait l'estime de formateurs qui le reconnurent : «Sérieux et conscient il prenait des engagements et il les effectuait avec un grand sens de la responsabilité. Infirmière louable et d’exquise charité. Dans ce domaine il sait être assertif et autoritaire. Pietà bonne, l'intelligence suffisante et une bonne application " (admission à la profession perpétuelle).
À la fin de la théologie, il fut destiné à l'Indonésie où il est arrivé en Février 1961 et où il a travaillé pendant toute sa vie : 24 ans à Mentawai et 28 ans à Jakarta.
Dans les Mentawai il était vicaire à Sipora (19 62-1965), et puis curé à Siberut (1965-1968 ; 1980-1986), mais surtout il fut le fondateur de la communauté chrétienne de Sikabaluan (1969-1980).
«Là-bas, dans la forêt équatoriale il n’y avait absolument rien. J’ai commencé dans une cabane comme les leurs, avec des murs de l'écorce des arbres et le toit de feuilles et j’ai commencé à construire un bateau, comme eux, pour être en mesure d'atteindre les villages de l'île " (Interview par Matthew P. Rebecchi le 19/11/2007).
Dès le début le P. Giuseppe a orienté ses activités à l’annonce de la Parole de Dieu et à l'amélioration des conditions de vie des personnes dans la santé, l'éducation et la technologie. Avec équilibre et gradualité, il répondait progressivement aux besoins réels de la population.
" J’avais l'habitude d'aller dans les villages et la première chose que je faisais était de guérir les malades. Je portais des médicaments et je faisais ce que je pouvais ... " (Interview 2007).
Mais la demande plus insistante était que le Père ouvrit l’école. Après quelques années, tous les villages avaient leur petite école avec un enseignant qui leur apprenait à lire et à écrire. Plus tard, dans les villages où le gouvernement avait construit les écoles moyennes, ont été ouvertes les écoles à régime d’internant pour permettre de poursuivre les études à ceux qui en avaient voulu.
" Au cours des cinq premières années - écrit dans « Missionnaires Xavériens mai 1987 »- à travers l'école nous sommes entrés dans de nombreux villages. Je n’ai jamais fait une tournée pour chercher les chrétiens. Ils sont toujours venus seuls et nombreux. Les communautés ont été confiées à des laïcs, Baja Gereja (l’ancien de la communauté), assisté par des chargés de la liturgie, de chant, de catéchisme, et de toute construction. Périodiquement les laïcs spécialisés réalisaient des cours de formation. Le P. Giuseppe, assisté par un groupe de Mentawaianiens, a également édité la première traduction du Nouveau Testament en langue mentawaiana » (Osservatore Romano 29/11/68).
En 1986, il a quitté les Mentawai et il a rendu son service pastoral dans les paroisses Stella Maris et Sainte Marie de Fatima à Jakarta. Jusqu'en 2010. Toujours avec son style de présence fraternelle, il a valorisé les laïcs, avec une attention particulière aux plus démunis de la région et en collaborant à l'éducation des jeunes avec de nombreuses bourses. Depuis 2010 il fut un confesseur dans la communauté de philosophie.
Dans une interview en 2007 le Père Giuseppe se souvient que dans le premier voyage d'exploration dans la région de la Sikabaluan le mentawainien qui l'accompagnait l’avait présenté ainsi aux gens de Lubaga, le premier village visité: « Ce n’est pas un« sasareu » (étranger). C’est un ' sasaraina ' (frère).
Être frère de tous était le programme de sa vie.
