P. FRANCO FIORI

Riposi in pace.

FR. FRANCO FIORI

Fr. Franco Fiori died in the Mother House on 24 October 2016. Born in Castelleone (Cremona – Italy), on 8 October 1935, he was 81 years old.

From junior high school until the first year of Theology, Fr. Franco was a student at the Seminary of Cremona (1946-57), a diocesan community that was open and dedicated to the Church’s universal mission. Many diocesan students joined the missionary institutes and Fr. Franco began to dream about the missions after reading the biography of St Damien de Veuster, who was a missionary among the lepers in Molokai. This dream became a life choice when he read the Encyclical Fidei donum, in which Pope Pius XII made an urgent appeal for missionaries to be sent to the non-Christian countries (21.4.57),

Fr. Franco was a strong, determined individual and quite autonomous in fulfilling his projects. His Rector believed that he was too lively for life in a religious community. Fr. Franco persevered with his request and finally obtained the longed-awaited permission to join the Xaverians.

He joined the Institute at S. Pietro in Vincoli on 14 November 1957 for the Novitiate year. He made his First Profession on 15 November 1958 and moved to Parma to continue his Theology studies. He was ordained priest in Parma on 13 November 1960.

After ordination he was sent to Scotland to study English. In the meantime he taught art and geography to the Xaverian aspirants. After two years he had to leave for Sierra Leone, which urgently needed a priest for the parish and school of Kabala. Two years later he was back in Coatbridge and Glasgow, where he served as treasurer and worked in the pastoral ministry. A beginning to his priestly life…that lasted six years, perhaps too long for his liking: on 16 November 1966, he wrote, “I think my ideal would be best fulfilled in direct missionary life, or at least in a good number of years in the missions”.

During this fragmented period of service to the mission he remained sure and determined, something that is well documented in his application for Final Profession: “I have completed my three years of temporary profession and without hesitation I ask, if it is God’s will, to make the Final Profession” (24.10.61). The same determination emerged in his report on the first year of activity in Glasgow:”…I have tried to be faithful to the five principles that Fr. Dagnino gave us before we left Parma” (25.8.62).

From 1967 until 1997 he worked in Sierra Leone.

He was among the pioneers of the mission, “the missionary in those days was a jack of all trades: a priest, doctor, assistant, teacher,  surveyor” (Interview, Vita Cattolica, Cremona, Cremona, June 1967).

Thereafter he was entrusted with organizational tasks. From 1967 until 1977 he was Inspector of the 120 schools in the Diocese of Makeni. He served as Rector of the Domus in Kissy (1975-78; 1980-82). From 1975 until 1982 he was a prison chaplain. He also served as Director of the West Africa Leprosy Secretariat. In 1984 he was asked to serve as Treasurer in the two communities of Scotland. He returned to Sierra Leone in 1989 and remained there until 1997, working in the pastoral ministry and as a military chaplain.

From 1998 until 2012 he was a member of the Cremona community where he worked as a confessor in the Cathedral and in missionary animation. In 2012 he moved to Parma because of serious health problems.

On 7 June 1984, he wrote: “I won’t hide the great difficulty I experience in leaving Sierra Leone, even for just a few years, and the work to which I have given the best years of my lifer. The confreres, teachers, lepers, local and foreign directors, prisoners all have a special place in my heart and have become part of me. No human consideration can justify even a temporary separation from them. Only Faith can help me to see and accept this new assignment as a sign of God’s Will”.

May he rest in peace.
