Il 14 gennaio 2014, ad Alzano Lombardo (Bergamo – Italia) è stato trovato senza vita nel suo letto il P. Mario Giavarini. Secondo il medico di famiglia il padre era morto tra la mezzanotte e l’una.
Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Cavriago (Reggio Emilia – Italia) il 24.11.1935.
P. Mario fu allievo del Seminario di Reggio Emilia, dalla prima media al primo anno di teologia.
Nel 1955 entrò all'Istituto a S. Pietro in Vincoli per l’anno di Noviziato. Così raccontò la sua scelta vocazionale al P. Maestro in una lettera del 17.6.1955: “ Non avevo mai pensato alle missioni estere. Poi quest’anno il Signore mi toccato con la sua grazia. Mi ha fatto trovare in circostanze che mi hanno spinto a lavorare più seriamente. Poi venne un lampo di luce che illuminò i miei orizzonti e me li fece vedere sotto una luce tutta nuova. Ai miei occhi si presentò un ideale al quale prima non avevo mai pensato seriamente e lo vidi con una chiarezza che non ammetteva equivoci. Per qualche mese non ho avuto altro pensiero per la mente: donarmi in modo completo a Dio e donarmi a Lui nelle missioni perché questa è la via che più di tutte richiede donazione e perché le missioni sono forse il problema che più sta a cuore a Dio, anche perché più dimenticate. Nella donazione completa a Dio ho trovato il segreto della mia felicità e ho compreso che non vale nulla una vita se non è spesa per Lui”.
Emise la Prima Professione il 12.9.1956. Passò quindi a Piacenza (II e III Teologia) e infine a Parma (IV Teologia) dove fu ordinato presbitero il 21.2.1959.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato al Congo dove dal ’59 al ‘70 fu impegnato nella pastorale a Mwenga, Baraka, Burhiba e Kamituga. “Siamo sbalorditi di come il Signore benedice e feconda il nostro lavoro (30.7.63). Si tratta di “una esperienza modesta ma vissuta con riflessione e entusiasmo”. Particolarmente apprezzata l’esperienza di vita comunitaria e di apostolato con i Padri Bianchi per la “chiara distinzione dei compiti nel rispetto e nella collaborazione sincera; i piani pastorali definiti insieme; la regolarità di lavoro, senza eccessi (... alla saveriana)”.
Nel 1970 gli fu proposto l’avvicendamento: “Questo, forse, viene a sconvolgere i suoi piani nei riguardi della attività missionaria, per la quale ha voluto mettere a profitto anche questi mesi di attesa, con uno studio e un impegno molto edificanti. So di chiederle un sacrificio, ma lo faccio in vista di un bene maggiore per le nostre missioni (Mons. Gazza, 15.4.70)”. La risposta dopo una settimana: “Non sono abituato a trattare le destinazioni che mi vengono dai Superiori. Mi sento più tranquillo nell’accettare. In Missione non ho mai rifiutato uno spostamento, e ne ho avuti tanti e mi sono costati tanto”.
Dal ’70 al ’75 lavorò in Italia: Direttore spirituale a Cremona e poi Rettore dello CSAM di Parma e Presidente dell’EMI; dal ‘76 al ’79 fu Rettore della Teologia di Pozuelo de Alarcon in Spagna.
L’esperienza dell’avvicendamento risultò piuttosto ‘frustrante’ per P. Mario. Quello che invece realizzò in modo soddisfacente fu l’aggiornamento. Nei nove anni trascorsi in Italia e Spagna riuscì a seguire dei corsi di Catechesi, Missiologia e Pastorale, rispettivamente a Verona, a Madrid, a Bruxelles e a Roma.
Nell’80 ritornò in Congo: parroco a Luvungi (80-83) e poi Direttore del Centro Catechistico a Kavinvira, per un anno soltanto perché i Vescovi del Kivu nel 1984 lo richiesero per l’insegnamento di Liturgia, Catechesi e Pastorale nel seminario interdiocesano di Murhesa. P. Mario credeva in questa attività anche perché aveva toccato con mano che “ci sono giovani e ragazze ottimi, pieni di fede e generosi, assetati di preghiera e animati da autentico zelo” (20.9.86).
Nel 1987 fu richiamato definitivamente in Italia. Fu Rettore delle comunità di Zelarino, Desio, Parma Casa Madre, Vicenza, Alzano. In una situazione missionariamente nuova. “Le vocazioni sono diminuite e la maggior parte dei missionari nei nostri paesi d’Europa sono anziani. C’è la proposta della missione ad tempus, che va bene per i non consacrati. Inoltre oggi non pochi partono per i paesi poveri per sostenere lo sviluppo di quei popoli. Ma per il missionario ad vitam il vero motivo della missione non può che essere l’amore a Dio. Non si fa missione per cercare successi, per spirito d’ avventura, per costruire opere imponenti, ma per annunciare il Regno e servire nella gratuità” (aprile 2013).

Fr. Mario Giavarini was found dead in his bed on 14 January 2014, in Alzano Lombardo (Bergamo, Italy). Born in Cavriago (Reggio Emilia, Italy), on 24 November 1935, he was 78 years old.
Fr. Mario studied at the Seminary of Reggio Emilia in the period from junior high school until the first year of theology.
He joined the Xaverians in 1955 at S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate. He thus described his vocational decision to the Novice Master in a letter dated 17 June 1955: “ I had never thought of the foreign missions. This year the Lord touched me with his grace. He placed me in circumstances that pushed me work more seriously. I learned to see my horizons in an entirely new light and I saw before my eyes an ideal that I had never thought seriously about before, and with a clarity that left no room for misinterpretation. For some months I had no other thought in mind: I must give myself to God completely for the missions because this is the way that, more than any other, calls for self-giving; and also because the missions are perhaps the problem that is dearest to God’s heart because it is the most neglected problem. In the complete gift of self to God I have found the secret of my happiness and I have understood that life is worth nothing unless it is spent for him”.
He made his First Profession on 12 September 1956. He then moved to Piacenza (II and III Theology) and later to Parma (IV Theology), where he was ordained priest on 21 February 1959.
After his ordination he was assigned to the Congo where, from 1959 until 1970, he worked in the pastoral ministry at Mwenga, Baraka, Burhiba and Kamituga. “We are amazed at how the Lord blesses our work and makes it bear fruit (30.7.63). It is “a modest experience, but lived with reflection and enthusiasm”. He especially appreciated the experience of community life and apostolate with the White Fathers for the “clear distinction of tasks in respect and sincere collaboration; the pastoral plans defined together; the regularity of the work, without any excesses (… Xaverian style)”.
Rotation was proposed to him in 1970: “This, perhaps, upsets your plans concerning the missionary life. I know I am asking you to make a sacrifice, but I do so in view of the greater good for our missions (Bishop Gazza, 15.4.70)”. He replied one week later: “I am not used to negotiating assignments from my Superiors. I feel more serene just by accepting them. In the Mission I have never refused a transfer, and I have had many of them and they cost me a lot”.
From 1970 until 1975 he worked in Italy as Spiritual Director at Cremona, rector of the CSAM in Parma and President of EMI; from 1976 until 1979 he was rector of the theology community of Pozuelo de Alarcón in Spain.
The experience of rotation proved to be quite ‘frustrating’ for Fr. Mario. He was, however, satisfied with his experience of aggiornamento. During the nine months he spent in Italy and Spain he completed courses in Catechesis, Missiology and Ministry at, respectively, Verona, Madrid, Bruxelles and Rome.
In 1980 he returned to the Congo: he served as parish priest in Luvungi (1980-83) and then as Director of the Catechetics center in Kavinvira, for just one year, because, in 1984, the Bishops of the Kivu asked that he be assigned to teach Liturgy, Catechesis and Pastoral ministry at the inter-diocesan seminary of Murhesa. Fr. Mario believed in this activity also because he had seen firsthand that “there are excellent young men and women, full of faith and generous, thirsty for prayer and animated by authentic zeal” (20.9.86).
In 1987 he was called back definitively to Italy. He served as Rector in the communities of Zelarino, Desio, Parma (Mother House), Vicenza and Alzano in a situation that was new from a missionary perspective. “Vocations have diminished and the majority of missionaries in our European countries are elderly. Some propose the mission ad tempus, which is alright for people who are not consecrated. Furthermore, many people go to the poor countries to sustain their development. But for the missionary ad vitam, the true motive of the mission can only be love for God. We do not do the mission in order to seek success, or out of a spirit of adventure, or to build imposing structures, but to announce and serve the Kingdom gratuitously” (April 2013).
