NOTE BIOGRAFICHE DI P. GIANFRANCO SANA (1948-2026)

Venerdì 06 febbraio 2026, alle ore 8.30, presso l’Ospedale Bolognini di Seriate, Bergamo, Italia è deceduto il nostro confratello p. Gianfranco Sana. P. Gianfranco aveva 77 anni compiuti essendo nato il 21 luglio 1948 a Ponte San Pietro, Bergamo, Italia.

Dopo aver compiuto gli studi superiori di Geometra e Disegnatore Meccanico a Bergamo, Gianfranco si iscrive al Politecnico di Milano dove frequenta i corsi di Ingegneria Civile (Sezione Trasporti). Il 01.10.1973 (all’età di 25 anni e trovandosi al V anno di Ingegneria) entra nella comunità Saveriana di Desio, MB, Italia, dove completa gli studi fino al raggiungimento della Laurea in Ingegneria Civile - Sezione Trasporti (27 febbraio 1976).

Vive l’anno di noviziato a Tavernerio (1975-1976) dove emette la prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria il 01 settembre 1976. Compie gli studi di Filosofia e Teologia a Parma (1976-1981). Durante la sua formazione a Parma, emette la Professione Perpetua (03 dicembre 1979) e riceve l’ordinazione Presbiterale (21 settembre 1980).

Conclusa la formazione, p. Gianfranco viene destinato allo Zaire. Mentre è a Parigi per lo studio della lingua francese (1981-1982) viene ridestinato alla “neonata” circoscrizione del Camerun-Ciad. Nel settembre del 1982^[1] arriva a Gounou-Gaya, Ciad, dove impara la lingua Mussey ed è viceparroco della locale parrocchia (1983-1989).

Dal 1989 al 1992 p. Gianfranco è a Gobo, Yagoua, Camerun, impegnato nella Pastorale in zona Mussey. Nel 1992 e nel 1993 partecipa ai Tre Mesi e vive l’anno sabbatico nel Collegio Conforti a Roma. Ritorna in Camerun dove è parroco della parrocchia “Sacré-Cœur” di Ndog Passi - Douala.

In seguito, p. Gianfranco viene richiamato in Italia per un breve periodo (1994-1995) dove svolge il ruolo di Rettore della Comunità di San Pietro in Vincoli e allo stesso tempo è impegnato nell’Animazione Missionaria.

Dal 1995 al 2015 p. Gianfranco è nuovamente in Camerun dove svolge vari servizi: rettore della comunità di Douala-Oyack, P.A.F.^[2] (1995-2001), economo regionale (1999-2005); rettore della comunità di Bafoussam, Filosofia (2001-2007). Dopo un breve periodo di aggiornamento a Parigi (2007-2008), ritorna in Camerun dedicandosi al servizio pastorale a Yaoundé – Teologia come parroco della vicina parrocchia “Jésus le Bon Pasteur” di Oyom Abang, Yaoundé.

Nel 2015 p. Gianfranco ritorna definitivamente in Italia dove lavora nella comunità di Brescia (2015-2017) come economo locale, animatore missionario e ministero. Dal 2017 al 2025 vive nella comunità di Ancona e svolge il compito di Incaricato della “Missione Ad Gentes” in Italia.

Dal maggio 2025 si trovava nella comunità di Alzano Lombardo, Bergamo.    

“Reverendissimo Padre, a tre anni dalla mia prima professione dei voti religiosi, dopo aver fatto un cammino di fede che mi ha aiutato a purificare e maturare motivazioni più profonde per la vita religiosa, con l’aiuto di Dio, sento di chiedere a Lei e alla Congregazione di fare la professione perpetua dei voti di povertà, castità, obbedienza e missione in questo Istituto.  Credo che la testimonianza dei consigli evangelici, vissuti nella fedeltà del servizio a Dio e ai fratelli sia il miglior annuncio che il Regno di Dio è già in mezzo a noi. L’esempio di Cristo che è vissuto povero, obbediente e casto per corrispondere pienamente alla “volontà del Padre” e servire alla causa del “Regno”, mi indica la strada che devo seguire. Mi riempie il cuore di gioia il pensiero che Dio Padre, nel suo disegno di infinito amore, mi abbia chiamato a seguire la strada di Cristo e a collaborare alla costruzione del Regno, che è “Regno di giustizia, pace e gioia nello Spirito Santo, però anche il peso e la responsabilità di tale compito che mi pone di fronte alle mie povertà umane e spirituali. Mi consola, tuttavia, il pensiero che “Gesù chiamò a sé chi volle” e in particolare “coloro che di fronte al mondo contavano nulla”. Dio stesso ha rivelato le ricchezze del Regno non ai sapienti e agli intelligenti, ma ai “piccoli” che hanno accolto la sua Parola con fede. Anche il voto di missionarietà, carisma tipico del nostro Istituto, di essere inviati alle genti ad annunciare il Regno di Dio, lo sento come continuazione del compito che Gesù ha lasciato ai suoi “discepoli”. La dimensione comunitaria nella quale siamo chiamati a vivere la vita religiosa e missionaria, ritengo sia necessaria e importante sia come aiuto alla pratica dei consigli evangelici, sia come testimonianza di evangelizzazione… (Dalla Domanda per la Professione Perpetua, Parma, 10.10.1979).

Ricoverato in ospedale a causa di una emorragia cerebrale, il 6 febbraio 2026 p. Gianfranco sale in cielo per contemplare la Gloria del Risorto e partecipare della vita eterna.

FR. GIANFRANC0 SANA (1948-2026): A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

On Friday, February 6^th, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. (local time), our 77-year-old confrere Fr. Gianfranco Sana passed away at Ospedale Bolognini in Seriate, Bergamo, Italy. Fr. Gianfranco was born on July 21^st, 1948, in Ponte San Pietro, Bergamo, Italy.

After training in a vocational school in Bergamo as Surveyor and Mechanical Designer, Gianfranco enrolled at the Politecnico University, Milan. He attended courses in Civil Engineering (Transport Section).

On October 1^st, 1973, at the age of 25 and while attending the fifth year of Engineering, he entered the Xaverian Community in Desio, MB, Italy. There, he completed his university studies and graduated in Civil Engineering – Transport section (February 27^th, 1976).

• 1975-1976: novitiate in Tavernerio, Como, where he made his first Religious and Missionary Profession on September 1^st, 1976.
• 1976-1981: philosophical and theological studies in Parma. During his training in Parma, he made his Perpetual Profession (December 3^rd, 1979) and was ordained a Priest (Septmber 21^st, 1980).

Upon completing his formation, Fr. Gianfranco was assigned to Zaire. However, while in Paris for the study of French (1981-1982), he was re-assigned to the newly established circumscription of Cameroon-Chad.^[3]

• September 1982: Fr. Gianfranco arrived in Gounou-Gaya, Chad, where he learnt the Mussey language.
• 1983-1989: vice-pastor of the parish in Gounou-Gaya, Chad.
• 1989-1992: pastoral ministry in the Mussey area of Gobo, Yagoua, Cameroon.
• 1992-1993: Three-months ongoing formation programme and one year of sabbatical at the Collegio Conforti, Rome.
• 1993: return to Cameroon as pastor of “Sacré-Cœur” of Ndog Passi,

In 1994 Fr. Gianfranco was back to Italy for a short time (1994-1995) as rector of the Community in San Pietro in Vincoli while, at the same time, working in mission awareness.

From 1995 to 2015, he was again in Cameroon where he carried out several tasks:

• 1995-2001: rector of the community in Douala-Oyack, P.A.F.^[4]
• 1999-2005: regional treasurer.
• 2001-2007: rector of the community of philosophy in Bafoussam.

• 2007-2008: refresher course in Paris, after which he went back to Cameroon. He stayed in the Theologate of Yaoundé and from there carried out pastoral ministry in the near “Jésus le Bon Pasteur” Parish, Oyom Abang, Yaoundé.

In 2015, Fr. Gianfranco returned to Italy for good.

• 2015-2017: community treasurer, mission awareness and ministry in Brescia.
• 2017-2025: in Ancona, in charge of Mission ad Gentes in Italy

From May 2025, he was staying in the community of Alzano Lombardo, Bergamo.

“Reverend Father, three years after my first religious profession and a faith journey that has helped me purify and lead to maturity my deepest motivations for religious life, with God’s help, I feel moved to ask you and the Congregation to allow me to make my perpetual profession of the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and mission in this Institute. I believe that the witness of the evangelical counsels, lived in fidelity to the service of God and our brothers and sisters, is the best proclamation of the fact that the Kingdom of God is already among us. Christ’s example, who lived in poverty, obedience and chastity in order to answer fully to the “will of the Father” and serve the cause of the “Kingdom”, shows me the path I must follow. My heart is filled with joy at the thought that God the Father, in his plan of infinite love, has called me to follow the way of Christ and to collaborate in the building of his Kingdom, which is ‘a Kingdom of justice, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.’ At the same time, my heart is also filled with anxiety at the consideration of the weight and responsibility of this task, as it confronts me with my human and spiritual poverty. However, I am consoled by the thought that “Jesus called to himself those he wanted” and in particular “those who counted for nothing in the eyes of the world”. God himself revealed the riches of the Kingdom not to the wise and intelligent, but to the “little ones” who accepted his Word with faith. I also feel that the vow of mission, the charism typical of our Institute, which means to be sent to the nations to proclaim the Kingdom of God, is a continuation of the task that Jesus left to his “disciples”. I believe that the community dimension in which we are called to live our religious and missionary life is necessary and important both as an aid to practising the evangelical counsels and as a witness to evangelisation... ” (From the Application for Admission to the Perpetual Profession, Parma, October 10^th, 1979)

After having been hospitalised due to a brain haemorrhage, on February 6^th, 2026, Fr. Gianfranco went up to Heaven to contemplate the Glory of the Risen One and partake in life eternal.
