On 8 August 1918, bishop Conforti sent out a Pastoral Letter on the priestly vocation. In it he recommends that everyone, priests, family and school, get involved “in the promotion of vocations to the priesthood”. The Church has always seen in the evangelical counsels a special path to holiness” (Vita Consecrata, 35). To overcome the idea that holiness is reserved to a special state of perfection does not imply a levelling down of vocations.
If it is true that all are called to holiness, this holds true for us, who have publicly declared that God’s will is the sole purpose of our life, following Jesus, the chaste, poor and obedient missionary, as his disciples.
Not only: religious must be “a strong help (to lay people) in striving for holiness” (Evangelica Testificatio, 4).The Christian people look to religious: “be truly poor, meek, eager for holiness, merciful and pure of heart. Be among those who will bring to the world the peace of God” (ibid. 54). (Letter of the GD. “The grace of holiness”, Schema 3 A p. 45).
