L’ “ad gentes” inestinguibile di Conforti!
A volte, senza volere o quasi per caso, ci si imbatte in qualcosa che ci fa stoppare il salto a mezz’aria. Ma toh! – mi dico, mentre cerco di atterrare alla meno peggio e mi metto a riordinare le idee… Questa premessa per dirvi che mi sono imbattuto in qualcosa che, senza essere nulla di straordinario, mi aiuta a riprendere certi discorsi che si stanno facendo adesso tra noi Saveriani, in vista anche del prossimo e imminente XVII° Capitolo Generale. Di cosa si tratta?
Riprendendo in mano la pregevole biografia del Conforti scritta da Don Angelo Manfredi, mi sono fermato ad un periodo della vita del nostro Fondatore che l’autore descrive cosi: “Dopo il 1924-1925… un altro momento di fervore di espansione fu vissuto da Conforti e dai Saveriani nel 1927. Conforti scriveva al Card. Van Rossum, Prefetto di Propaganda fide, per chiedere una missione in Africa, possibilmente ‘in Kamerun’, secondo la grafia del tempo, ispirata dagli ex-padroni coloniali tedeschi (…)”.
Come consta dal suo diario, di questa decisione di ‘aprire’ all’Africa, il Fondatore ne aveva già parlato con i suoi collaboratori più stretti e quindi si era deciso di prendere la penna in mano.
Il 29 maggio 1927, infatti, Conforti scriveva così al Cardinale: “(…) Tra i nostri Allievi che si preparano con tanto ardore all’Apostolato, parecchi si sentono inclinati vivamente verso gl’infedeli dell’Africa. E ripetutamente domandano di poter essere mandati, in grazia, ad evangelizzare una parte del Continente nero. (…) Io ho ferma fiducia che, colla grazia di Dio, gli umili figli dell’Istituto di Parma potranno fare del bene anche nel continente Africano. Per questo, assecondando un desiderio così santo, e dopo matura riflessione, udito pure il mio Consiglio Direttivo, prego ardentemente l’E.V. di voler affidare al mio umile Istituto un novello campo di Apostolato nell’Africa. E se mi è lecito esprimere il mio sommesso desiderio, io preferirei una parte del Kamerun. Se codesta Sacra Congregazione vorrà benignamente esaudire la nostra umile domanda, l’Istituto nostro si prende fin d’ora il formale impegno di provvedere di operai evangelici anche la nuova Missione. Nel prossimo anno 1928 potrebbe inviarvi 6 o 7 Missionarii, nel 1929 altri 5, e così ogni anno, con l’aiuto di Dio, ne manderà secondo il bisogno”.
Il linguaggio è chiaramente datato. Però in questo gesto è riconoscibile immediatamente l’animo del Conforti. Il suo essere costantemente proiettato, aperto all’ad gentes! ‘Caritas Christi urget nos’: è quel suo motto che lo motiva perennemente, come una spina nel fianco… “urget”, ci interpella, ci spinge, non ci dà tregua, non dà scampo, non ci lascia in pace… perché sono esageratamente troppi coloro che ancora non conoscono Cristo! E’ quell’ urget che, dopo averlo motivato a dar vita ‘all’audace progetto’ dei Saveriani e ad accettare la Cina come campo di evangelizzazione per i suoi Missionari, mantiene il Conforti con lo sguardo e il cuore… disposto anche all’Africa! E questo nonostante il suo Istituto non stesse attraversando un buon momento, soprattutto (proprio forse anche per la sua celere espansione) dal punto di vista economico.
Bene, mi è sembrato cosa buona riprendere questo elemento della biografia perché ci può aiutare nell’attuale momento della nostra Famiglia missionaria.
Prima di tutto per quell’ urget: come per il Fondatore, quel fuoco dovrebbe stare alimentando l’entusiasmo missionario dei Saveriani! Con le pile scariche non si fa molta strada; la luce, fioca, così irradiata non sarebbe sufficiente nemmeno per uno, immaginarsi per altri! Il “ripartire dal primo annuncio”, come raccomandatoci dal XVI° CG, consiste prima di tutto nel rendere vigente e forte nuovamente quell’ urget! Per l’oggi, per qui, per là, per i vicini, per i lontani, per chi si avvicina, per noi che andiamo lontano!
Un altro invito ci ha fatto il XVI ° CG: la necessità del “riposizionarsi”! Che è molto legato al fatto del “ripartire…”: se quel Capitolo parla della necessità del ‘ripartire’, è come un allarme che si è lanciato! Chissà se l’ urger dei Saveriani non si sia un po’ arenato, almeno per alcuni, nelle paludi del ‘fare’… nelle dune del molto parlare e teorizzare… andando ad affievolirsi mano a mano che l’intorno si faceva sempre più rarefatto e ostile al messaggio di Gesù Cristo.
Come si può vedere, partendo da questa piccola vicenda di quasi un secolo fa, è lo spirito aperto e lungimirante del Conforti che a noi serve ricuperare oggi: l’ urget rinnovato e rielaborato e trasformato da ciascuno in gioia dell’annuncio, in coerenza e fedeltà con l’impegno preso, capacità di incarnazione vera e non superficiale con le culture che ci ospitano, agilità e libertà nel ricevere ma anche nel lasciare, nel mollare posizioni o strutture per ricuperare la priorità assoluta del messaggio e del Messaggero!
Ritornando alla storia, la risposta del Cardinale di Propaganda fide non pare sia stata incoraggiante, fu anzi negativa… tant’è che il Fondatore sentì il bisogno di mandare un suo inviato per ritornare alla carica, ma ottenendo lo stesso risultato.
Comunque, non possiamo dire che il ‘virus’ del Conforti, quell’ad gentes che poi era di Paolo e in ultima analisi, di Gesù Cristo (“…ho molte altre pecorelle che non sono qui…”) non sia passato come eredità ai Saveriani: basta guardare la storia… quando cacciati dalla Cina, il ventaglio delle loro presenze si è aperto a moltissimi altre nazioni e culture.
Curiosità finale: in quella stessa data del 29 maggio, ma del 1952, ossia 25 anni dopo da quella lettera di intenti, il ‘sogno’ di Conforti, in qualche modo, si avvera, con la creazione in Sierra Leone – Africa occidentale - della Prefettura Apostolica di Makeni, affidata ai Saveriani! Prima loro presenza e responsabilità in Africa! Ma toh!

Conforti’s imperishable “ad gentes”!
Sometimes, almost by chance, we come across something that stops us in our tracks and makes us think … This happened to me recently and, although it is nothing extraordinary, it helped me to focus on some topics that we Xaverians are discussing as we get ready for the imminent XVII General Chapter.
Reading through the excellent biography of Conforti by Fr. Angelo Manfredi, my attention was drawn to a period of the Founder’s life, which the author thus describes: “After the year 1924-1925… Conforti and the Xaverians experienced once again an enthusiasm for expansion in 1927. Conforti wrote to Cardinal Van Rossum, the Prefect of Propaganda fide, to ask for a mission in Africa, ‘in Kamerun’, in the spelling of those times, which was inspired by the former German colonialists (…)”.
The Founder’s diary tells us that he reached this decision to ‘open up’ to Africa after discussing the matter with his closest collaborators.
Conforti wrote to the Cardinal on 29 May 1927,: “(…) Among our students who are enthusiastically preparing for the Apostolate, there are several who wish to work among the pagans in Africa. They ask repeatedly to be sent to evangelize a part of the black Continent. (…) I am confident that, with the grace of God, the humble sons of the Institute of Parma will be able to do good in the African continent too. Therefore, in order to satisfy this holy desire, and after mature reflection and discussion with my Council, I beseech Your Eminence to entrust a new field of Apostolate in Africa to my humble Institute. If I may be so bold, I would like to express a preference for a part of Kamerun. If this Sacred Congregation grants our humble request, our Institute will immediately provide apostolic workers for the new Mission. Next year, in 1928, we could send 6 or 7 Missionaries, another 5 in 1929, and so forth every year, with the help of God, I would send them missionaries according to the needs”.
The language is obviously dated, but with this gesture Conforti reveals how his heart was constantly open to the ad gentes! ‘Caritas Christi urget nos’: he was always inspired by his motto … “urget”, it challenges us, drives us and never leaves us in peace … because far too many people still do not know Christ! The urget that, after inspiring Conforti to give life to his ‘audacious project’ and accept China as a field of evangelization for his Missionaries, kept his eyes and heart open to Africa too! He did this in spite of the fact that his Institute was not having an easy time, especially from the financial perspective (perhaps also because of its rapid expansion).
I believe this episode from the Founder’s biography can help us in this present moment of our missionary Family.
First of all, the urget: just like the Founder, the same fire of missionary enthusiasm should be burning in the hearts of the Xaverians! If our batteries are low on power, we will not go far! The dim light of exhausted batteries would not be enough for one person, never mind for many! The “new beginning based on the first proclamation”, as the XVI General Chapter exhorts us, consists first and foremost in making the urget relevant and powerful once again! For today, here, there, for the near and the far, for those who approach us, and for us who go far away!
The XVI General Chapter also asked us “to reposition ourselves”! This is closely connected to the “new beginning…”: in speaking of a ‘a new beginning’, the XVI General Chapter gave us a wakeup call! Perhaps the urget of the Xaverians has run aground somewhat, at least in some cases, in the swamps of ‘action’… on the dunes of excessive talk and theorizing … fading away as the surroundings became more rarified and hostile to the message of Jesus Christ.
As we can see from this episode of almost one century ago, it is the open and farseeing spirit of Conforti that we need to rediscover today: the renewed and re-elaborated urget, transformed by each one of us into the joy of proclamation, in consistency and fidelity with the commitment we have taken, an authentic and profound incarnation among the cultures that host us, flexibility and freedom to receive, but also to let go, leaving positions or structures in order to rediscover the absolute priority of the message and the Messenger!
Returning to history, the response of the Cardinal of Propaganda was negative … and the Founder sent someone to repeat the request on his behalf, but with the same result.
We can truly say that the ad gentes ‘virus’ of Conforti, which was the same virus of St. Paul and, indeed, of Jesus Christ (“…I have many other sheep who are not here …”) was handed on to the Xaverians as their heritage: we only have to look at our history … when we were expelled from China, the range of our presences opened up to many other nations and cultures.
A final point of interest: on the same date, 29 May, but in 1952, 25 years after that famous letter, Conforti’s ‘dream’ in some way became reality, with the creation in Sierra Leone – West Africa – of the Apostolic Prefecture of Makeni, which was entrusted to the Xaverians, their first presence and responsibility in Africa!
