"Mondialità" today and tomorrow

BUON ANNO!
Con queste parole vogliamo far giungere a tutti la benedizione di Dio. Lo facciamo con l’antica formula contenuta nella Sacra Scrittura:
«Ti benedica il Signore e ti custodisca. Il Signore faccia risplendere per te il suo volto e ti faccia grazia. Il Signore rivolga a te il suo volto e ti conceda pace» (Nm 6,24-26).
La nascita di Gesù Cristo è la luce di Dio per l’umanità. É il Suo volto che brilla per noi e su di noi. È il Volto di cui, come missionari, vogliamo essere un riflesso. È il Volto che vogliamo rivelare nei gesti concreti, nelle azioni della missione che costruiscono dialogo, comprensione e riconciliazione con la forza della verità, le armi della preghiera, la fedeltà alla consacrazione e il duro e onesto lavoro quotidiano.
Un nuovo anno è un nuovo viaggio: l’Eterno custodirà la nostra partenza e il nostro arrivo, da ora e per sempre (Ps. 121,8). Al suo fianco, anche le più difficili esperienze lasceranno un’impronta positiva nel nostro cuore, nelle nostre relazioni e nell’impegno missionario.

Come Famiglia saveriana, stiamo vivendo gli ultimi giorni di quest’anno con particolare trepidazione, accompagnati da vicende molto dolorose e tristi che ci hanno provato non poco. Solo pochi giorni fa abbiamo affidato al Signore il nostro Padre generale Luigi Menegazzo, deceduto il 18 Dicembre scorso.
La crisi socio-politica nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo dove decine di nostri confratelli stanno lavorando, già sta mietendo vittime innocenti e ci preoccupa grandemente.
Quale senso possiamo dare a questi nostri giorni di fatica e di dolore? La risposta la troviamo ancora una volta sul volto del Bambino, che oggi è il Vivente, per sempre risorto dalla morte.

All’inizio del nuovo anno, volentieri condividiamo uno degli ultimi scritti di P. Menegazzo, intitolato “Educazione alla Mondialità e i Saveriani oggi”.
Il contesto è quello del “recuperare una visione comune della missione”, concetto che P. Luigi riprendeva spesso e che gli era molto caro. In questo intervento, egli sottolinea la dimensione della reciprocità della missione, come ricerca di autentica comunicazione e di rispetto verso la cultura e le tradizioni religiose con le quali vogliamo condividere la nostra esperienza di fede.
Il Centro Documentazione Saveriani Roma, che raccoglie l’impegno dei saveriani nel campo del Dialogo interreligioso, interculturale e della Educazione alla mondialità, sia uno strumento per promuovere e sostenere queste priorità della nostra opera missionaria.

Educazione alla Mondialità e i Saveriani oggi

"Fedeli al desiderio del Fondatore S. Guido M. Conforti, i Missionari Saveriani non hanno mai abbandonato l’impegno di essere, negli ambienti dove vivono e lavorano, operatori e formatori di menti aperte, lungimiranti, attente ai problemi che ci circondano e ottimisti per il futuro.

Nel corso dei decenni, dall’inizio della nostra Congregazione, gli strumenti usati a questo scopo sono stati molteplici, in alcuni casi anche all’avanguardia e precursori di metodologie educative innovative. Degno di nota è stato lo sforzo di mantenersi al passo con i tempi, con le nuove tecnologie, con le esigenze delle giovani generazioni. Un dettagliato resoconto di quanto si è fatto e si continua a fare nel diversi Paesi dove noi Saveriani lavoriamo, renderebbe l’idea che il coinvolgimento nella educazione umana e spirituale della nostra Famiglia è qualificato pur essendo a molti sconosciuto o poco familiare.

Oggi i Saveriani si propongono essenzialmente due scopi: essere educatori di coscienze delicate e attente; formare persone capaci di scegliere ciò che è bene per il proprio Paese e per il vero progresso umano. I metodi usati per raggiungere questi scopi dipendono molto dai luoghi e dalle culture dove le comunità saveriane si trovano ad operare. Come Congregazione, però, abbiamo alcune priorità che cerchiamo di tenere presenti per essere efficaci educatori.

L’educazione al Dialogo Interreligioso è ritenuta di grande importanza, specialmente in società e situazioni di conflitto e radicalismo. L’incontro tra fedi differenti, infatti, permette non tanto una coerente conoscenza dei contenuti religiosi, ma piuttosto lascia intravvedere il vero animo altrui, le sue speranze e le sue prospettive, ciò che costituisce il segreto della sua serenità interiore e dona profondo significato alla vita dell’individuo. Vari Saveriani sono coinvolti in questo processo educativo, con pazienza e competenza, formando le menti all’accoglienza e non al giudizio, alla meraviglia e non al pregiudizio.

Il mondo delle culture è un altro campo nel quale i nostri confratelli stanno mettendo molto impegno. Ogni cultura è un patrimonio che porta in sé ricchezze enormi, che ha potenzialità grandi per mantenere la pace e vivere nella uguaglianza, per insegnare i valori irrinunciabili della vita e favorire la coesione familiare e sociale. Noi missionari riteniamo nostro dovere far conoscere le culture nelle quali lavoriamo, e conservarne i tratti fondamentali quando alcune di esse sembrano destinate a soccombere sotto i colpi della globalizzazione. Raccogliamo i testi sacri, gli usi e i costumi che scandiscono i momenti principali della vita delle persone e della società, le lingue, i rituali religiosi, le arti e i mestieri. Varie pubblicazioni escono regolarmente su questi aspetti, con l’unico scopo di educare le nuove generazioni a imparare dalla storia, a non negligere un cammino culturale senza il quale non ci sarebbe l’oggi. Le ricerche e le produzioni saveriane nel campo del dialogo interculturale vogliono educare le menti delle generazioni odierne e renderle oggettive nei giudizi sulla storia, sulle varie e lecite visioni del mondo e della società. Solo una mente duttile, capace di analisi, grata alla storia passata e presente, può costruire il futuro. In aiuto a questo tipo di formazione servono le pubblicazioni periodiche e le monografie prodotte dai Centri di Studio Saveriani e anche l’insegnamento diretto in alcuni Atenei.

Come Congregazione desideriamo essere parte attiva in questo impegno alla educazione alla Mondialità, che coinvolge molte altre realtà, ciascuna con un fine specifico. Ci siamo impegnati, quindi, nella ristrutturazione dell’Archivio Generale della Congregazione per renderlo moderno e aperto. Desideriamo condividere le nostre ricchezze con tutti coloro che sono impegnati nella Chiesa e nella Società e lavorano per la mutua comprensione tra i popoli, le culture, le fedi. Oltre ad una abbondante e ordinata sezione cartacea, l’Archivio, aperto al pubblico per qualsiasi ricerca, si è anche dotato di un efficace supporto mediatico che lo ha messo in rete con chiunque desideri condividere con i Saveriani l’impegno per la formazione intellettuale, spirituale e umana delle persone. Le pubblicazioni, le ricerche sulle religioni e le culture, gli studi antropologici ed etnologici, linguistici e sull’arte, dei popoli dove lavoriamo, sono a disposizione di tutti sul sito web Centro Documentazione Saveriani Roma. Crediamo fermamente, come Famiglia Missionaria, di avere un compito specifico e nobile da svolgere nella nostra epoca, come anche è stato per le epoche passate. Quello che abbiamo esperimentato, studiato, raccolto, tutto questo desideriamo che non sia un tesoro privato, ma che tutti possano usarlo, farlo proprio, esaminarlo e, possibilmente, trasmetterlo ad altri affinché le menti e i cuori si arricchiscano e insieme possiamo lavorare per il bene dei popoli.

La educazione alla Mondialità per noi Saveriani continua, essendo parte del nostro Carisma. E a tutti coloro che, in vario modo, prenderanno ispirazione da questo nostro impegno, già offriamo il nostro appoggio e il nostro ringraziamento."

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

With these words we want God’s blessing to reach everyone. We do so with the ancient formula contained in Sacred Scripture: «May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace » (Nm 6:24-26).

The birth of Jesus is light for humanity; it is His face that shines for us and upon us. As missionaries, we wish to be a reflection of this Face. It is the Face we wish to reveal in our concrete gestures, in our missionary actions that build dialogue, understanding and reconciliation with the power of truth, the arms of prayer, fidelity to our consecration and our hard and honest daily work. A new year is a new journey: the Lord will keep our going out and coming in, from this time and forevermore (Ps 121:8). At his side, even the most difficult experiences will leave a positive mark on our heart, on our relationships and on our missionary commitment.

As a Xaverian Family, we are living the last days of this year with a particular trepidation, accompanied by very painful and sad events that have sorely tried us. Just a few days ago we entrusted to the Lord our Superior General, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, who died on 18 December. The socio-political crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where dozens of our confreres are working, is already killing innocent people and is causing us great concern. What meaning can we give to these days that are times of difficulty and sorrow for us? We find the response once again in the face of the Child, who today is the Living One, raised from the dead forever.

At the beginning of the new year, we are pleased to share with you one of the last articles written by Fr. Menegazzo: “Formation to Globality and the Xaverians today”. The context is “recovering a common vision of the mission”, a concept that Fr. Luigi often spoke of and which was close to his heart. In this article, Fr. Luigi emphasizes the dimension of reciprocity in the mission, as a quest for authentic communion and respect towards the culture and the religious traditions with whom we wish to share our faith experience. May the Centro Documentazione Saveriani Roma, which gathers the fruits of the Xaverians’ commitment in the fields of interreligious and intercultural Dialogue and Formation to globality, be an instrument for promoting and supporting these priorities of our missionary work.

"Faithful to the desire of the Founder, St. Guido M. Conforti, the Xaverian Missionaries have never abandoned the commitment to be, wherever they live and work, agents and formators of open and forward-looking minds that are sensitive to the problems that surround us and optimistic about the future.

Over the decades since the beginning of our Congregation, many instruments have been used for this purpose and, in some cases, they were also groundbreaking tools and precursors of innovative formative methodologies. We have made noteworthy efforts to remain in step with the times, the new technologies and the needs of the young generations. A detailed report of what we have done, and continue to do, in the various countries where we are working, would highlight our Family’s qualified involvement in human and spiritual formation, even though it is not very familiar or known to many people.

Today, the Xaverians have essentially chosen two goals: to be formators of sensitive and attentive consciences; to form persons capable of choosing what is good for their own country and for the true progress of humanity. The methods used for reaching these goals depend much on the places and the cultures in which the Xaverian communities are operating. As a Congregation, however, we have some priorities that we try to bear in mind in order to be efficacious formators.

We believe that formation to Interreligious Dialogue is very important, especially in societies and situations where there is conflict and radicalism. Indeed, the encounter between different faiths does not so much enable us to obtain a solid knowledge of religious contents, but, rather, it gives us a glimpse of the others’ authentic heart, hopes and prospects, the secret of their inner serenity and of that which gives a profound meaning to the life of the individual. Various Xaverians are involved in this formative process, working with patience and competence, to form minds to be receptive and not judgmental, to a sense of wonder and not to prejudice.

The world of cultures is another field in which our confreres are heavily committed. Every culture is a patrimony that bears enormous riches within itself, riches that have great potential for maintaining peace and living in equality, for teaching the essential values of life and promoting family and social cohesion. We missionaries believe it is our duty to make known the cultures in which we work, and to preserve their fundamental characteristics when some of them seem doomed to succumb to the threat of globalization. We collect the sacred texts, customs and traditions that mark the principal moments of the life of individuals and society, the languages, religious rites, arts and crafts. Various publications on these aspects are issued regularly, with the sole purpose of forming the young generations to learn from history and not disregard a cultural journey without which there would be no today. The Xaverian research and productions in the field of intercultural dialogue aim to form the minds of the modern generations and make them objective in their judgments on history, and on the manifold and legitimate visions of the world and society. Only a flexible mind that is capable of analysis, and grateful to past and present history, can build the future. This type of formation is helped by the periodical publications and the monographic studies produced by the Xaverian Study centers, as well as by the direct work of some Xaverians as lecturers in some universities.

Our Congregation wishes to play an active part in this commitment of formation to Globality, which involves many other realities, each one with a specific purpose. We have therefore committed ourselves to restructuring the General Archives of the Congregation in order to make them more modern and accessible. We wish to share our resources with all those who are committed in the Church and in society to strive for mutual understanding among the peoples, cultures and faiths. Besides an abundant and well-ordered paper section, the Archives, which are open to the public for any kind of research, are also online for anyone who desires to share with the Xaverians the commitment to the intellectual, spiritual and human formation of persons. The publications, research on religions and cultures, anthropological and ethnological studies and linguistic and art studies on the peoples among whom we are working are available to all on the website Centro Documentazione Saveriani Roma. As a Missionary Family, we firmly believe that we have a specific and noble task to carry out this period of history, just as we did in the past. All that we have experienced, studied and collected is not a private treasure: we want it to be available to all, so that they can use it, make it their own, examine it and, hopefully, hand it on to others in order to enrich minds and hearts and so that we might all work together for the good of the peoples.

For us Xaverians, formation to Globality continues to be part of our Charism. We offer our support and gratitude to all those who, in many different ways, will take inspiration from our commitment."
